steps for taking apart the GD88 with pics!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: zaku

Alright. i finally got a chance to open up the phone and thought to share it with everybody the steps to do so.
By the way, i didn't break up my phone after all those steps.

Click Here for the Instructions and Pictures

ok here are the steps.
Take off the rubber pads on the 4 corners to find the screws.

***Link no longer valid, see link above***

After screws have been taken off, to completely remove the front faceplate, there are 2 clips to hold it on each side.
See pic and u'll have an idea where the clips are located. then the faceplate can be taken off easily.

***Link no longer valid, see link above***

In order to take out the whole LCD screen assembly, u'll need to take off the earpiece first. There are 2 clips holding the green board of the earpiece. (see pic)
Just ply them out and the green board will come off. after the green board pops out, u could remove the whole earpiece with the black thing together easily by plying the other 2 black clips holding it. (see pic)

***Link no longer valid, see link above***
***Link no longer valid, see link above***

now to remove the main panel, u'll need to ply out the small clips that holds the board in place. (see pic)
repeat the same step for the other side.
now u will notice that the main board can be all taken off.
But becareful not to bend it too much at this moment since there is that "orange flat cable" that goes to the camera head.
mainly the place where it might break up easily is where in the second pic i circled in yellow. So don't bend it too much or the whole chip might come off as i noticed.

***Link no longer valid, see link above***

to take the camera head off, first take out the grey cover, which has nothing holding it after u move out the whole screen assembly. (see the second pic for how the grey cover looks)
After taking out the grey cover, just push the camera head out from the left side as shown in the pic, and ply the clip on the right side that holds that orange cable.
(also now u can lay down completely your screen to flat without worries.)

***Link no longer valid, see link above***
***Link no longer valid, see link above***

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
so that's about it for the first half of the phone. the other half should be much easier. so i think if u've done all these with ease, then the second half will be no problem.
Good luck for anyone that wants to try out and change to a new housing! but remember... you're doing these AT YOUR OWN RISKS!

btw, thanks to one of our hofo members that contributed the screwdriver to me! wanna identify yourself out?

Posted by: joie05

Yeah! You're the man! You gotta change the housing for me then, heheh =D

Posted by: mavericke

that is so cool! it will be very much easier for me to change the housing. I am tired of the vodafone cover.

Posted by: turbo_slug

thanks for the instructions

when you change the housing, did you have to transfer your front sublcd lens to the new housing?

did you have to transfer the clear plastic screen thingy for the color lcd too?

if so, how do i do that?

the housing on ebay doesn't included the lcd front pieces...
are there any reliable sources for those pieces?

I would really like to post this on my new site that is coming out soon. I would give you full credit. Let me know if you would like it posted. Site will be up in a couple weeks. Thanks

a seller called "trading_shop" on ebay sells gd87 full housing including the plastic screens.

the plastic screens i don't see screws or any clips holding them from the inside.. so i think they are most likely glued to the faceplate. u'll have to push them out from the inside in order to take them out.

sure.
and if you feel that u can't understand my instructions explained well, just ask me so maybe u can write up a better explanation steps for everybody

take out the screws located in the pointed area
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***
the housing is holded by 2 clips on each side. see pic to have an idea where the clips are.
this might need a lil effort since the clips are big and holds tight.... * do not "over-insert" your pliers or whatever u will use to separate the holding clips. or u might damage the inside circuit board! (see how close the circuit board is located to the edge of the housing.)
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***

after have separated the clips that are holding the 2 parts of the housing together, just open it up!
there are nothing to worry about tearing off a wire or something by opening up the back part of the housing. coz the contacts aren't soldered by wires but just contacts. (refer to pic)
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***

you could remove the whole keypad circuit board by turning it out the board to the other side (there are nothing holding the board from the housing), then disconnect the connector that goes to the other half of the phone.
to remove the connector, u have to be extremely careful. the connector looks very fragile. My recommendation is to use a very tiny flat screwdriver and push it out lil by lil from the inside on the left side where there are no metal contacts..refer to pic. (if u had already experienced removing those kind of connectors then it won't be a prob for sure )
btw, if u removed the connector and after u putting all back together, you will notice that you'll have to set your clock again in the display. It isn't that you break off your clock function as it scared me the first time
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***
and voila the connector removed
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***

if ever happens to u that this small lil part falls out (it happened for me). here is the right place where it belongs.
It's a lil small magnet...
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***

after assembly all back, phone still not dead! keypad led, screen, everything still works see pic for proof!
(for ppl that noticed, the reception didn't decreased because of the phone has been opened up but the phone is in the basement )
***Link no longer valid, see link in first post***

For housing change, the last important thing will be the rotating part on the center of the phone... i still haven't found out how to take it out but it seems to me that from seeing it from the inside, there seems to be no way from there. I suppose it must be that u'll have to take out the lil round chrome part from the outside for it to be separated..
That seems to scratch up the phone and i'm not changing my housing yet so i don't want to try it. so leave it to u guys that owns a new housing ready to swap to really figure it out.

The Complete disassembly instructions with pictures are in the link in Post #1

open the phone, desolder the old leds and solder back the desired leds
there are 14 leds for the keypad

You think I can get one of these at the local electronic/hardware store or canadian tire?

Thanks

unfortunaly i don't think so.
i also went to my local electronic store and canadian tire. they don't carry those kind of screwdriver

btw i ordered that kind of screwdriver and it workd fine.
http://www.action-electronics.com/ezpower.htm
it didn't fit very well (bigger) but it's quite good quality and it works fine. since it's bigger the size it can also take ur screws off even if your screws' Y dents are a lil rounded/worn off (as in my case...).

Posted by: JonHsiung

woot! thanks. time for an LED conversion!

...anybody want some money? this isn't one of the DIY things i like to do. changing the cover and taking apart i'm not afraid of, but soldering small LEDs bug me.

Posted by: zaku

Just did a housing change with joie05 (one of our HoFo member ). It was successful and here are the results!

to complete the taking apart instructions, for how to take off the chrome like screw on each side of the phone, pics and instructions will be up soon! it's very easy and not hard to do it at all. (BTW, thanks HI-NRG for the tips )

Posted by: zaku

there's another easier way to take apart for housing change here.

1: take off only 2 parts of the housing leave it as shown on pic.
***Link no longer valid, see first post***

2:then u can just remove the screen board and the keypad board together all off in one shot. see below pic. (be sure to unclip the camera lens first. refer to previous instructions)
***Link no longer valid, see first post***

now for the chrome like screws on each side of the phone, after opening it up, see that 4 black clips that holds it. push each of them inwards to unclip and push out for it to come off from the side. It takes off easily. see below pic for the black clips that holds it and how the "screws"(dunno the specific name) looks like. note that one is longer than the other so it only fits in their appropriate side if ever u forgot which side it came from.
***Link no longer valid, see first post***
so that's all. as JonHsiung said, time for a LED conversion anybody will do it?

The Complete disassembly instructions with pictures are in Post #1

Posted by: turbo_slug

yeah, the hinges are pretty easy to remove but that's not the hardest part about changing housings

it's getting the brass screw anchors transferred to the new housing....

one wrong move could mean both the old and the new housing is ruined.

u post it as if it were yours. if u did just link to my original post here, then i wouldn't mind AT ALL.

anywayz. since the look-alike moderator of this panasonic forum (the one that made new rules about cracks and hacks here) is ignoring me to edit my pics links, i'll post them later on again in new posts following this.

thanks then can i just post a link on other forum and say it from you.

ebay has lots of them.. i typed "gd87 housing" for search and it came out a bunch

Posted by: YourFace

Zaku, I just got my GU87 from eBay. I have to unlock it to get it to work with Cingular. I also just found out that the one I bought has some scratches on it and is missing one of those rubber things that covers a screw. So...I found your directions about how to replace the housing and I saw you can get silver, blue, or pink housings on eBay for $20. I might do this..

My question is...where do I get those little rubber things from. They don't seem to come with the housing kits. What if I just needed the rubber piece. Where else can you buy parts for the GU87 phone?

Posted by: turbo_slug

damn...does anyone know where i can get replacement rubber screw covers?

nice led conversion!
u did that by yourself? is it hard to solder??

Posted by: iliksprite

yes i did do it myself its just like any other surface mount leds for a phone only that there were 14 but anfter doing 21 leds for a sprint a620 for my friend it didnt seem that bad. But i havebeen soldering for a couple of years. Its rather simple though with anthing you just need to know which way the bulbs go

Posted by: zaku

cool... so ur experienced on that...
did u have to buy any super fine tip soldering iron?? or u did with normal ones? and where u bought the leds? i can't find anywhere that sells them

Posted by: iliksprite

i used a regukar tip that comes with a 15watt soldering iorn it takes a little longer to desolder but i like the control over the 30 watt. honestly the cheapest and easiest way to get leds nowadays is to buy one of those flashing keypads and desolder the lights off of there. THe only problem is that sometimes the bulbs arent as high quality . I ussually use a tester first to test teh quality of the color before i install them but if they have a demo of how the lights look then you should be alright.
hope that helps

Posted by: zaku

thanks for the info

so u took your leds from a flashing keypad? are any flashing keypad led gonna fit for the gd88? and any tips about the polarity of the leds when installing? will u happen to burn out the led if u got the soldering tip on it too long?
sorry for so many questions

Posted by: iliksprite

the easiest way is to use two soldering iorns to remove the leds but with a 15 watt there is a less chance of you burning out the bulbs. If anything you should only be touching the bulbs for a few seconds at a time. like i said you should also try to get a tester so you dont have to guess which way the bulbs go im also posting the layout for you so you dont have to worry about the set up on the phone is. And dont mind the questions i know how much it sucks to mess up your phone, been there done that tooo many times.
http://groups.msn.com/iliksprite/shoebox.msnw?Page=40

Posted by: zaku

thanks for the layout

so which size of leds did u bought? and what did u use as tester??

Posted by: turbo_slug

yeah, which side and how much did the leds cost?

i never bothered changing mine because i thought it'd be too expensive...

btw, wont blue leds look better?

Posted by: iliksprite

i use the small size surface mounts i think they are the 2mm i forget but it really doesnt matter as long as you have enough space to make contact with the ends. i have done a lot of led changes and i think blue is too common see you like blue and so do a lot of people so i try to stay different im sure that it would look really nice though. As far as cost goes, you pay for the quality of the bulbs. When i first started i was paying almost $2 per a bulb but now there are a lot of distributors that have bulbs for 0.50 a piece. Or the cheapest way is to buy a flashing keypad of ebay $10 for 20 plus bulbs you just have to look for the best deal. THe ones i used on my gd88 are white bulbs from a s105 flashing keypad. a tester you can pick up at radio shack . all it is is a case with a red wire and a balck one that is powered by 2 AA batteries i can take a picture of mine if you want to try and make one. just let me know.

LEDs are not bulbs...they are diodes...

also, quality shouldn't be too much of an issue. they aren't gas filled bulbs.

as for testers...a multimeter is fine...

Posted by: iliksprite

Yes he is correct pardon my slang its just im used to refering to the led's (light emitting diodes) as bulbs. (i mean comonin common talk with people what sounds easier to say "diode" or "bulb" i like the single syllable.) sorry please except my apology.

Posted by: iliksprite

well since somebody asked if the blue would look better i got a twin for my phone and made it blue. you can click on the links and then let me know what you think.

you need to know a little bit about electronics and how diodes work...

you can use a multimeter to find out which way is fwd bias of the diode

Posted by: Jeanius

Do they do the same thing to nokia phones? Solder the lights on? Because i heard that they use some sort of gel pads or something. Oh well. Do you think stores outside that sell aftermarket mobile products will do that light conversion for me?
i'm too lazy to go out, and don't have much time. thanks

Posted by: iliksprite

yup same thing as with the nokia phones but not to sure what teh gel stuff youre talking about. A store that installs lights may do it but they may not have the screwdriver to open the phone. I do them my self so i just need to get bulbs.

Posted by: xyzyx

cool!

Posted by: Jeanius

I would love to do it myself. I checked out the light up nokia battery i had, it had 12 lights, missing 2, and i broke 2. So 10 left. lol
The diodes are pretty obviously soldered, i can just melt the two sides. Till then, i need to get a tri wing screwdriver. or i might just go and pay someone to do it. Just worried if they scratch my phone.

Posted by: georgetrevis

After taking my phone apart to put the new facia on I have these two problems:

1/ 2 small brass bits from ariel section fell out and don't know where they belong?

2/ small microphone brass bit fell off microphone! Now can't speak into phone to answer calls!

WHAT HAVE I DONE!

HELP!!!!

Posted by: Jeanius

A brass bit should be located between the two outside screws on the back above the speaker, you will see a third whole in the middle. The second brass bit i don't konw. Good luck in repairing it!

Posted by: xyzyx

i need help getting the triwing screwdriver in singapore man.. ebay wont work coz i dun have a credit card

Posted by: georgetrevis

Just bought one on ebay!

£5.99

Get your credit card sorted! And get one!

Still know idea where this brass fiddly bit goes!

Posted by: turbo_slug

the phone is easy to take apart...

you push the hinges out from inside the phone

and now that ebay housings are the nice full housings, no need to deal with those brass screw anchors....

just do it....i never used the pics and i did it...

hey, noobie here... i've decided to buy a black housing for my gd87 and am wandering how you can change the cover of the battery because otherwise it will look out of place...
does it just snap off? if i can get it off i can spray it or maybe find a black cover..

for the mic i think the only thing to check is to see if both of the mic contacts are in good contact with the board... as there's no cable connections but just a contact for the mic

Posted by: rooster100

where is the mic?

Posted by: zaku

the mic goes below the keypad. in the center where there's a hole

Thanks for the instructions! I changed mine to an all black housing.
One problem...my phone doesnt shut tight like it used to. It snaps shut, but if i hold it upside down, it will open slightly making the screen turn on. Is there any way I can make it shut tighter?

This is my black housing GD88

Replaced the housing on mine last night. Fairly straight-forward but I have one problem. There is a brass like piece of shaped metal just underneath the arial whcih came out and I don't think has gone bacvk in correctly as a little bit is sticking up and preventing the case from closing 100%.Not really an issue but would be nice to resolve.

Ihaving done this, I now have a tri-claw screwdriver if anyone wants to buy it. It cost me £6.50 so will happily sell it £3 plus postage (willship worldwide - doubt it will cost much)

email me at ian.scanlan@hta.org.uk if you want it.

Hey Zaku, thanx for the great tutorial,

I have a bit of a problem though,

I bought an OEM face plate off ebay and the plate doesnt have brass fittings on it. I managed to pluck one out of the original but im having problems with getting it into the new housing. Any suggestions on how to deal with these brass screw fittings anyone?

Anybody done this with their x70?

I was thinking of buying a housing/facia from ebay with a tri screwdriver and change it.

Just don't know how to take the x70 apart?

Need instructions before I attempt it.

Zaku- thanks so much for your detailed description of disassembling your Panasonic. For some reason, I can't view any pictures you listed. If you could email the pictures to me directly, @markwilliamsx@hotmail.com I would be eternally grateful and owe you more than I can describe!! Thanks-->Mark W.

I forgot to add that I also have a broken hinge and have recently purchased a housing off of ebay, along with a Y-screwdriver. I really need your help from there!!

this is a great idea to put up threads like this. Everyone should be able to change faceplates themselves.

I'm having a different problem with my GD88. It's not housing related because I already know how to take the housing off and on. In fact, I took the whole thing apart and tried to fix my headset jack because it doesn't work properly. When I am using a handsfree earpiece, I can hear the person on the other end, but for some reason they can't hear me. I know the handsfree earpiece isn't the problem because I have used a few different ones and still the same symptoms.

Is this problem common? Because I remember I bought another used GD88 and when I received it, I had the same problems with the headset jack (×××× ebay!! )

I know that in order to fix it, the the connector where the headset plugs into needs to be soldered, but I don't know where it needs soldering exactly.

Is someone able to help me out?

Hi Guys,

I have a GU-87. After reading this I really want to dissassemble my phone in order to install a different housing and speakers.

However.

Are there METAL housing available? Anyone know. Same goes for a louder speaker for the ear-piece and def for the speaker phone.

Anyone know, please pass it along. I have looked and haven't found diddly, even with the local mod people in Markham. Which is surprising.

Thanks,
Ryan

I have replaced the housing cover of my GD88 and i have two problems. The camera is on straight when the phone is open, but when i try to take a picture with the phone closed, the photo is upside down. The second problem is my external LCD doesn't turn on anymore. Can anybody give me a suggestion why these things went wrong?
