MMS after Switching to internet2.voicestream.com??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Genghis Khent

I have a P800. I use T-Mobile. I am on the unlimited $19.95 data plan. I use internet2.voicestream.com for my GPRS connection.

My MMS connection does not work. I followed BengalBoy's settings, both with and without username/password. I get a request timed out unable to open the page error message.

Will MMS work if I use internet2.voicestream.com for my GPRS connection and that is my preferred connection (instead of WAP)?

The reason I am asking is I have seen posts in this forum that indicate I might not be able to use TM's MMS with this arrangment, but no definitive word. If this is mission impossible, I'd just as soon stop

I know I could call TM's WDG, but in my experience, this group is far more knowledgable, especially on this somewhat esoteric question.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia3595/1.0 (7.00) Profile/MIDP-1.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0 UP.Link/5.1.2.2)

Decent had two no complaints though nothing special

All of my settings are the same as Bengalboy except 2 things. Under "Wap settings" at the end of the number string it has .165.50 , I change that to .165.050 as it is displayed on the T-Mobile web site.

Under the "settings GPRS" I check the "Use proxy server" and under the "proxy server address" I put internet3.voicestream.com and "proxy server port" I put 9201. Now everything work perfect.
cheers

I have spoken to third level support about this a month back (the folks in the UK) and the short answer is no.

I have an ongoing trouble ticket open with them about this issue.

You have to keep two APN/IAP setup on the phone and switch between them.

Anybody has any other insights?

Good luck.

Truth is you need to have a working (valid) T-Zones account, meaning a user name and password. MMS's go through->"WAP accounts> T-Zones" which goes through-> "Internet accounts> wap" which goes through-> "Internet accounts> GPRS". T-Mobile unlimited data plan will mean now you have unlimited T-Zones access (wap browseing).

Thanks Donamiche - I changed my settings as suggested and it worked. Thanks a lot. I really is a great feeling to have unlimited WAP too

Posted by: Genghis Khent

I tried the settings suggested in this thread. No cigar.

I then called TMobile. The CSR said I needed a TZones account to use MMS. I asked the CSR if TZones was included with the $19.95 unlimited data plan. After checking with his supervisor, he said no, in order to have a TZones account, you have to pay for it in addition to the $19.95 unlimited data plan.

If this info is correct, then the problem is not BengalBoy's settings, but instead that I don't have a TZones account, and having the $19.95 unlimited data plan does not give me a TZones account.

Is this your experience as well?

Posted by: Donamiche

But in any case that cust service sup. did not give correct info. Unlimited T-zones is surely inclueded. When you go to T-Mobile site if you have the ability to log-on and view your usage then you should also have a "T-Zones" user and password. That is the first thing you you need in order to use T-Zones and mms on your P800. Then After that, follow Bengalboy's "Wap account" and "internet" setup. As all this is realized you should have no settings problems.

P.S. before you can recieve an mms you must first send one (not to yourself,,maybe to your email account).

And also it will only be in your best interest to confirm weather your Data Plan is maintained on - internet2.voicestream.com or internet3.voicestream.com.

Cheers

Also before you attempt to send an mms first make sure your wap account is working by going to wap.myvoicestream.com on the default P800 browser.

First, thanks Donamiche and everyone else for your help.

A progress report ...

1. I did try Donamiche's suggestions, with the exception that I am on internet2, not internet3. As previously reported, same issues/problems.

2. The TM CSR I spoke to today told me the $19.95 plan DOES give TZones access.

3. I spoke to the TM WDG rep. I can access wap sites from the P800 default browser, such as wap.yahoo.com and wap.google.com, and also the SE wap site. What is weird is I can't access wap.myvoicestream.com. The error message I get is "The WEB server does not reply. Try again later. 513." More or less the same message girls told me in high school.

4. MMS didn't work. Same message as before.

I've now been escalated to Tier 3 support.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Posted by: raviarora

I tried using wap.myvoicestream.com too with built-in browser, but I got other error message (proxy setting something) and no - that's not what girls told me in high school

Using Opera - Speedwise (the Accelarator) errored out with 503 (connection failed). I am not sure whether wap.myvoicestream.com is up and running !!!

Nonetheless, I am able to send MMS...try putting non-formatted cellphone number, like 13125551212, instead of (312) 555-1212, in the To Field...this was suggested to me by various people in other thread.

Hope it helps, and keep us posted...

24 hours later, an update, and some progress.

I spoke to a TM WDG (Tier 2) rep, initially about another issue. I must be living right. He's a HoFo member.

First, he confirmed what others have said, that my inability to access wap.myvoicestream.com and my inability to access MMS are related.

Second, he observed that this issue appears to be that the TM proxy server is excluding me. While that does speak well for the proxy server's good taste, for my attempts to access wap.myvoicestream.com and MMS, it's still

Third, he noted the problem definitely is on TM's end, not the P800's.

What is weird is that he could send me an MMS message, which I not only received, but then was able to download. However, I could not send myself an MMS message, even after stripping out parentheses and dashes as suggested.

He confirmed my TZones account is fine (it is part of the unlimited data plan and he even tried to reset it). He updated my trouble ticket for the Tier 3 engineer who (hopefully) will call me tomorrow. I'll keep y'all posted.

.I'm still waitinng for my call from tier 3', its been about 2 weeks now. ln the meantime l would say to keep playing with your settings.

:wowwow: All this for only $19.95 a month! JK

Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time Genghis Khent... I do hope you resolve this soon.

You do have my curiosity now as to who the WDG HoFo member is

I suggest you tell T-Mo they should (at least) give you a month free "Unlimited Data" for all your troubles.

Since people are entitled to their privacy, I think it is only fair to let him expose himself I have told him about this thread.

My understanding from my hours of fun and games with this issue is that the problem is on TM's end, has affected far more people than just me, may be an unintended consequence of TM's opening the floodgates of unlimited data use, and is being worked on by TM, which is well aware of the issue. So I am just going to hang tight, and let TM solve the problem. Perhaps the reason several of us have not received the promised call from Tier 3 is that they need to solve their in-house problem before they really have anything to say to us.

I'll keep everyone posted when there is more to say. In the meantime, I will continue to since it feels so good when I stop.

Another 24 hour update ...

Had not heard from TM Tier 3 so I called in. Tier 2 (WDG) said they are behind because of a backlog of trouble tickets He was nice, and volunteered to add another 50 minutes to my account and said it should not be more than another 24 hours

I'll keep everyone posted ...

Another week, another update.

The weekend passed, and still no call from Tier 3. I asked my friend who works in Tier 2 what's happening. He told me the engineers are still working on the systemic problem, which apparently resulted from the change to unlimited data. Apparently there are over 100 people in my boat, but not everyone, which explains why some report their MMS, etc. works, and others that it doesn't. Unfortunately, I'm one of the few, the proud

Anyway, I'm apparently a lead trouble ticket. My kindergarten teacher did tell my parents I'd turn out this way.

I'll keep y'all posted.

A progress report

Since a week has come and went with no call from Tier 3, I called Tier 2. After I got the same old BS about they are looking into it, I should expect a call within 24 hours, blah, blah, blah, I told them I had been hearing the same BS for several days and wanted a straight answer.

I then was transferred to another Tier 2 rep, who gave me what I think is a straight answer. He owned up to it being a systemic problem that has affected many other than me and he did not know when it would be resolved. He suggested I check back in 10 days, which does not sound encouraging.

The bottom line. If you are not having the problem, you're lucky. If you are, you're not alone. I'll give an update if/when I have one.

I have the $19.99 unlimited internet plan and I can use MMS, email, WAP and Web pages without problems. I might be lucky or I might have different settings.
Here they are:

control panel - internet accounts - new
account name:GPRS
connection type:GPRS

Advanced

Server:
User name and password required - unchecked
User name - leave blank
Password - leave blank
Address - wap.voicestream.com

Log in:
Get IP address automatically - checked
Get DNS address automatically - checked

Proxy:
Use proxy server - unchecked

Other:
Enable PPP extensions - checked
Authentication - Normal

Preferred should be set to "GPRS"

Then,
control panel - wap accounts - new
account name: Tzones
internet account: preferred
use proxy: checked
address: 216.155.165.050
port: 9201
username: blank
password: blank

Preferred wap account should be set to "Tzones".

Hope this will help.

Posted by: Genghis Khent

dupasquier, thanks, but the problem is not the settings. Apparently, some people get locked out, some don't. I previously heard from my source at TM, and Tier 2 now had confirmed, that this is a known issue at TM's end. A bit frustrating, but I imagine they will solve it soon enough.

In the meantime it is not the end of the world. I have internet2 working so who needs WAP, no one MMS's me anyway and, as far as being excluded by the TM proxy server, I've been kicked out of better places.

Thanks again for trying to help, but I'm afraid this is TM's issue, with little or nothing to be done at this end. Take care.

Posted by: Genghis Khent

After not hearing from anyone from TM I called, spoke to Tier 2 (WDG), got a rep who drives in with the HoFo member who I mentioned also works for Tier 2, and got a resolution.

The good news ... MMS works. He sent me the settings, and for once, I received them. Near as I can tell, the only difference is the WAP account. There is a user name, wap. The password is *** but my guess is it is wap also.

The bad (sort of) news ... Apparently the unlimited data plan does NOT give you "Normal" TZones (I've heard both ways a few times). The entry on my trouble ticket says: "This soc does not include a provisioned WAP deck on the customer's TZones settings." This may mean I can't access wap.myvoicestream.com. I've tried through the WAP browser. I still can't access that page (I can access wap.google.com and other wap sites), though the error message is different at least (server may be down). I'll try later, though I am not sure I care really, since through Opera I can access the real WWW

Finally, to Martin, Chris and a few other TM Tier 2 WDG reps who have helped me, They were courteous, professional and knowledgable. I felt they were trying to help, and I did not feel I was being rushed, even though a couple calls took quite a while. Being used to Verizon customer support, which on a good day is and at other times is , leaving me to , TM customer suport has been , well, maybe that's going too far, but it has been

OK. Hopefully that is the end of this saga.

Jeff,
Congratulations...MMS away to all your friends

Thanks raviarora. Now all I need to do to MMS away to my friends is ... to get friends. TMobile told me that's not part of my plan either

Seriously, I'm still trying to get further clarity on this issue. I don't think the bottom line will change, I just want to understand it better. If/when I do, I will follow up with another post.

Posted by: Genghis Khent

A (hopefully) final update. I now access wap.myvoicestream.com as well as send and receive MMS. What did I do? Nothing. Evidently TM fixed whatever was wrong on their end.
