Door slamming - a rant of sorts

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Why do people feel the need to slam car doors? I have to tell my wife almost every time, please don't slam the door. It will shut extremely easily with almost no force from the person closing it.

This past weekend, I visited my sister in Chicago, who doesn't have a car. She had never seen my new to me 05 Audi A4. She gets in, and we go for a ride down to the store to get some ice. She gets out, and slams the door. When she comes back, and gets in, I tell her that she doesn't have to slam the door. What does she do? She slams the door even harder. I just sat there and stared at her. Seriously, just stared at her, my blood pressure just boiling. I didn't know what to say. I wanted to elbow her in the neck for a split second. I try to explain to her the reasoning behind me not wanting her to slam the door. She doesn't understand really...she has no car....lives in the city....blah blah blah.

I just want to choke someone when they slam my doors. You barely have to close them on this car, and they will close nicely. No need to slam them.

I know exactly what you mean, it drives me crazy too. It also really aggravates me when people slam the trunk lid as hard as they can. On every car I've ever owned the trunk required almost no force at all to close. My wife's previous car started leaking through the spoiler on the trunk lid. I swear it was from her slamming it so hard whenever she shut it. I never let anyone touch the trunk on my car.

I agree, I've closed my door from 10cm opening, with no force, and it closed.

I slam my door and even kick it closed sometimes...

1997 Oldsmobile Achieva < Hitchhiking with Miley Cyrus < Shooting myself in the face < Walking in the rain < Riding the bus < Riding Emma Watson < 05 Audi A4

Makes sense.

But if I ride in someone else's car, I have respect for their things. I won't even touch their radio, air conditioner, etc.

AHA! IM NOT THE ONLY ONE!

Especially if my window is down a bit, slamming it you can hear the window trying to fly out lol, but seriously, especially on cars with heavier doors and coupe's it doesn't take much to close the door, why do people need to slam it?!

Posted by: Ryan1524

They've had more than their share of things not closing for them, either when they were kids (weak), or for being a lifetime ***** (weak).

It's not a big deal!

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

It is a big deal. It is a huge pet peeve of mine, and she slammed it on purpose. Accident, ok, I can see an accidental slam. The wind catches it or whatever. This was no accident.

Posted by: huskyfan23

I mean that slamming the door isn't a big deal. It's not going to cause any damage... Your sister being a *****, however, is kind of a big deal

I guess I'm lucky in that I can lightly push on my door and it will close. I think it was designed to make it easy to close. I imagine the doors are pretty f'ing heavy otherwise. But closing my hatch is another story. It has to be slammed or else the dash will show the trunk as being open. I guess that's their way of trying to make you pay the extra xx thousand for the trunk closing assist feature

Posted by: jsarino

Yep, a pet peeve of mine too. Unless it's something that requires alot of effort to close (ex: heavy SUV hatch trunk), most newer cars/trucks/SUV's require minimum effort to close.

Buy a ford. You can close them easy and they close, and they can be slammed and it doesn't hurt it a bit, cause the doors are built solid. I can slam my doors as hard as I want, windows half up, all the way up, or down and it's just a solid close. Or I can close them softly and they latch just fine.

Nope. Also, even though Inifiniti is a Nissan company, I consider it separate when discussing the models I like.

That's why my car comes with rules... mainly, you break it you bought it.

The way I figure, if they break something on their own car, they would have to pay for it... so you break something on mine, then you got to pay for it. For all I care you can smash my windows in with a bat if your willing to pay for new ones. No ones actually taken me up on the offer yet.

Not the NSX or NSX-R? The GT-R does have a nice arse though.

No way! I'm actually not a huge fan of the look of the GT-R. And its rear looks like that of a Chevy Cobalt.

Posted by: oddsocks

Solution? Remove your doors.

Come to think of it, it looks more like the last gen Chevy Impala. OK, I don't like the look of the GT-R as much anymore.

Firstly, I am happy to find that I'm not the only one who can't stand *SLAM*
It does hurt the doors. Windows shutter, internals too, honestly there are very few things that aren't hurt by a continuous sudden stop from high velocities.

Take for example the hatch on our old, long-gone 1993 Honda Accord wagon. After years of slamming for no reason (honestly, gravity did all the work anyway), the latch totally stopped working, and the sensor always red the door as open. Totally related to little kids (read: me and my brother) slamming it.

Posted by: Amw3000

I cannot understand why people do it. My sister does it all the time in my dads 01 Civic, the doors require very little force to close, yet she slams it as if shes throwing the door 100 yards.

Posted by: Myclue

I feel you pain. slamming doors and slamming trunks drives me nuts!!

Posted by: dsigma6

From a very young age, slamming doors was one of the things I learned not to do around my dad. It carried over, so I understand the annoyance (Heavy). Even if my mom slams the door, I'm gonna say something.

Posted by: wingfeather

Always seems to be women who slam doors. I guess they don't mature as early as males.

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

It's not that they don't mature, I think that it is that they don't see it as being important. They don't see vehicles the same way that males often see them. I am not saying that about all females, but the majority.

My wife doesn't care. She slams the door on her vehicle all the time. I shut it softly. She just will never learn.

Posted by: huskyfan23

It's because the man typically pays for the car.

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

She pays for hers, but she doesn't respect it like I respect my car.

Posted by: MINIz guy

I'm not a fan of door slamming too. It happens a lot on our BMW X5 by both my parents, as the doors are quite heavy compared to many other cars I've tried. What they usually do is push it with the same force as on our BMW 325xi, yet the momentum will carry on an the door will shut with some force. I just bring the door 4 or so inches away and give a push; no slam yet it shuts perfectly.

Posted by: huskyfan23

4 inches? That's pretty ridiculous. Just close it normally.

Posted by: jsarino

I'm fairly soft about closing doors, but 4 inches is alot.

Posted by: jaustin

I can't stand that either my brother does it all the time and then he will just get in and sit down on anything in the seat too. Sunglasses, packages, anything pisses me off.
