i have 205/65/16 winter tires on 16 x 6.5 steel rims.
i came through some 225/55/16 winters and wonder if those will be too wide for the 6.5 width rims to cause bulging on the sidewall?

i know the new tires are a bit lower in profile but i don't really mind. what i'm most worried is the width.

My memory might be a little foggy on this, but I think that 225 might be stretching it a little, or a lot on a 6.5 wheel.

no, you will be fine.

My lexus comes with OEM 16x6 rims, Size out of the factory is 205 width, but i have a 215 now and it is just fine.

Furthermore, i have a set of 17x7's for the summer months, and i am running a 225 wide tire on those are they are just about flush with the rim, of course a few mm's of rubber protecting the rim!

In short, they will fit.

Oh and the lower prfile sidewall wont be that much lower.

Your first size, is 65% of 205 mm

The second is 55% of 225 mm. More or less the same.

You should be fine with the tires fitting. Although, you're better off with the 205's. Thinner winter tires are better. They cut through the snow.

thanks guys.
i went and fitted the tires and they look fine, no sidewall bulging at all

i know it's better narrower width in snow but these 225's have more life left compared to my 205's and it's a much better quality winter tires so i just went for it
