Confused

Hello. New to iphone jail breaking so I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, lol. Been reading for about a week now and still a little confused regarding all the versions of the OS, firmware and boot-loader with regards to jail breaking.

I have a 32g 3GS with OS:3.1.2 Firmware:05.11.07 and boot-loader:5.8 (I think, not sure how to find this out on PC pre jailbroke). Bought iphone in July 2008 so I think its 5.8.

I know I can unlock with blackra1n RC3 but this is a tethered jailbreak. So if my phone crashes, reboot or powers off I can't turn on again til I reconnect to the PC. Are there any other options to jailbreak? Can I downgrade OS or firmware to jailbreak?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you bought your 3G S in July '08 you can have a normal jailbreak.

there was NO 3gs in '08

or, do you have multiple 3g phones?

lol. Sorry that was July 09 I got my phone. Put the wrong year in, my bad!

If it's from July of this year why do you have to do a tethered jailbreak? I bought mine the same month and I didn't have a tethered JB.

I'm going to say this one more time.

TETHERED JAILBREAK DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BLACKRA1N! It has to do with your phones bootloader version if you have a 3GS.

man how is it blackra1n and purplera1n received horrible false associations with them. People thought purplera1n would make winterboard not work and that's False.
People think (i've seen so many posts it blows my mind) that blackra1n is a tethered jailbreak only and that's FAlse as well.

tethered jailbreaks are only for phones that
(A)came out around october and later
(B)that are week 40 builds and greater
(C)that have the new iboot (NOT bootloader).
The only way to jailbreak these are with a tethered jailberak which is only obtainable through blackra1n. Requirements (A and B) generally point to you having (C) in which you'd only get a tethered jailbreak.
If you don't have these requirements (namely C) then it's a normal jailbreak with blackra1n.

How is iBoot not a bootloader? iBoot is just the name of the bootloader.

It's really that people aren't reading and if they are, they aren't retaining the info. I guess I can understand how lost people can be when they start learning. I too was scared and somewhat lost at the begining of my journey.

To the OP. If you bought your 3GS in July of 09, Blackra1n RC3 will not be a tethered JB for you.

Only iPod Touch gen 3 or 3GS owners with 5.9 bootloader will have a tethered JB, and that's regardless of if you use BR or PwnageTool or custom IPSW. Its a limitation of the newest devices, NOT the JB method!!!

I'm pretty sure they are different (at least how they are talked about in this forum in terms of their use)

iboot - (when referred to in this forum has been) iBoot-359.3.2 is the newest version number that can only produce a tethered jailbreak. I believe it contains (or at least grants access) to the 24k exploit that makes jailbreaking possible. Only obtainable through DFU mode.

bootloader - 5.8 and below allows you to downgrade a baseband.
how to find bootloader version

see, the version numbers are completely different and if they were the same you could find your iboot via the same method but you cannot. That's how I've interpreted it and how I've found referred to online.

the second link you're referring to is the baseband bootloader.

whatever I didn't say it wasn't A bootloader I said it was not what we usually refer to as THE bootloader. Because when people talk about bootloader around here they are talking about the 5.8/5.9 bootloader that lets you downgrade the baseband and that's not the same as the iboot we talk about. I was trying to avoid confusion between the two so people don't start posting topics like 'i have bootloader 5.9 is that tethered?'.

but fine, it's a part of bootloader but it's not The bootloader as usually referenced. (since you can't tell your iboot from the method that tells your bootloader).
