Password for S55 at Start-up?

I would like to be able to set a password for my S55 when the phone is first turned on. I went to Setup-Security-Codes (9-7-1) and tried to set the "Chg. phonecode" but it presented a keypad for me to end a number. I entered a number and selected "Return". It presented the same screen again. If I select "PIN control (which is currently unselected) it now presents me with a message saying I have 2 more tries to enter the correct passcode. I presume that if I try this two more times unsuccessfully, the phone will be completely locked out from my use.

So, it would appear that there is a default passcode here. I called Siemens service line and spent 20 minute on the phone while the polite, but unaware, support person put me on hold to continue an information search. In the end the suggestion was to call my cellular provider. I am being told that the phone passcode rides on the SIM and the cellular provider can give me the "unlock". This doesn't make sense. It would mean that I could put another SIM in the phone and use it. How secure is that?

Questions
1. Is there a factory default for the phone passcode?
2. Does the phone passcode reside on the SIM or the phone memory?
3. Is the "Chg. passcode" item the correct one for locking the phone on initial start-up?

Currently running FW 16.

Be sure you're not confusing the SIM PIN with the phone code. The default phone code is in the manual somewhere - look it up. The default SIM pin needs to be provided by your carrier.

The phone code is not determined for new phones. You just enter it the first time you activate it.
