S56 as Wireless Modem

I know this is searchable and I've done so but I haven't seen this particular problem addressed. And with all due respect to any CS reps on this board, I'd rather try to get an answer here than call Cingular (at least right now).

I am trying out a Siemens S56 on Cingular here in NYC/LI (I know AT&T is better, T-Mobile is the same, but I really liked the S56 and, frankly, I've had significantly better reception on this combo than on a Nokia 6200 on AT&T that I'm also testing). Anyway, I'd like to use my Ipaq 3870 to connect over IrDa (or Bluetooth) to the S56 to access the Internet via GPRS. I've done this before with a Motorola P7389 and a T68i and, in fact (over IrDa) with the 6200. The steps AT&T give for setting this all up made everything a snap. However, when I try it with the S56 I get NOTHING. I'm not talking about an attempt to dial and then a busy, or a dial and then a message about invalid parameters, or a hang, or anything. I've set up a connection in the Ipaq which dials *99# (alternatively *99***1#) and when I initiate the connection to the S56 the Cingular logo just sits there. The phone (apparently) doesn't even ATTEMPT to do anything. I know IrDa and BT are working because I can beam contact data to the S56 and they both show as bonded and connected with BT (and of course YES I've started IrDa and BT on the S56).

Is there a special initialization string I need to send or perhaps ANOTHER setting on the S56 that needs to be tripped to get the thing to at least TRY to dial (I'll worry about the correct settings later).

Thanks in advance for any pointers.
