I have the Sprint version of the SCP 4000 but I no longer live in an area where sprint is available. However telus is available. The person at the sales counter said I need a new phone. Can the sprint phone be changed to work on with telus?

You need to contact Sprint and ask for an "unlock code" for your handset, therefore allowing you to use an outside CDMA network. Besides that, you'll also need a new PRL so your handset will search for the correct cell sites. Chances are, you probably won't be able to retrieve this code and your best bet is to purchase a new handset.

You have to get a new handset because sanyo phones wont let you change the network system ID when you program them

Stands for Preferred Roaming List. This is basically a list of networks (cellular sites) your phone is suppose to look for and connect to. Each provider has different PRL's. So, if you live in the US, and your provider is Sprint, Sprint has their own unique PRL list for you to roam in. However, Telus also has their own PRL for you to roam on. It is unique from Sprints.
