SL55 Data Cable Problems?

Has anyone had a problem with their SL55 USB data cable? 99% of the time when I try to connect it shuts the phone off. When I try to switch it on again it starts the greeting, then shuts off again. Could it be a defective data cable? My PC is registering the USB port as "GSM data cable." I want to upgrade to FW9.
