Is there a pc program that can conveniently backup my names and addresses located in the sim memory? I know that you you can transfer info from the address book but that can only be done one at a time.

Yup... get a SIM card reader!

It doesn't read the SIM through the phone... you actually plug the entire SIM into the reader (after you remove it from the phone). You can manage phone books, SMS messages, etc. It works like a charm for any GSM SIM card... whether it be from the S40 or some other phone like Nokia.

If yo uhave the software/drivers/whatever... you can actually use it for other smart cards as well. Credit card companies are making the Smart-Credicards now and Singapore has the CashCard.

I have one that I'm willing to sell... if you're interested let me know.

There are no addresses stored on the SIM, only plain numbers with names.
