pimp'n cover

Stupid question.

If you guys are into pimp'n sticks & such, why not make a pimp'n cover?

I mean people make cases & stuff like that. Why not make a complete cover solution from silver, of another type of metal. Essentially, a complete replacement for the plastic cover.

It certainly would solve the plastic look of the P800...

If you do, please remember who came up with the idea and give due credit (or a sample unit) to myself

If you wanna carry a 1 kg phone, why not I don't think its practical though.

Remember the Vertu… Platinum, Gold, Silver and SS Housings www.vertu.com

BTW this idea of precious metal housings is nothing new. i.e. a company that specializes in this http://www.aloisson.com/prodfre.html

Actually, I have already sometime ago begun to look for a affordable alternative to casting in gold or silver. The problem with solid metal is weight, and cost. Currently I am trying to get a spare battery cover plated by a company that bonds a metal finish to plastic. If it works, I will make it available to the public.

to save on weight, and to have a cool case, how about a real carbon fiber casing. that would be cool.

Good ol' Titanium - can't go wrong :P

Or I suppose magnesium would work as well.

Probably an alloy of some sort as they tend to be somewhat more durable than pure metal while still keeping the strength and weight consistant.

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way to make castings of either metal at a reasonable cost, and I don't know if it would be possible to make stamped pieces affordably either.

I suppose after saying that, on the other hand it doesn't really matter as my phone is in a Krusell case right now (which I really like), and the case material itself doesn't matter too much to me.

Titanium casing I believe is not possible at all. The case must have a bit of flex to it in order to fit the board. If any of you have opened up your P800 you will see 4 clips on the inside of the case that clips the board to the casing. I've been working on silver and platinum casing but as said before, the weight is unbelievably heavy. Aluminum may be a better choice. The silver also did not have enough flex to the casing and almost cracked the board. It's possible to shave a few mm from the front and back of the P800 but the sides remain the same size due to button placement. In the meantime, I'm using a black high gloss enamel cover since the electric blue color does not seem like much of a business tool. Has anyone replaced the internal memory yet? I'm thinking about getting at least a 64MB memory upgrade to the board if possible. Perhaps us HoFo members should consider manufacturing our own device to the rest of the world.

I'd so buy one if there was a carbon fiber housing.

That is what I was going to say/suggest as well. That would really look nice.

keep in mind it wouldn't need to have the same thickness as the original case...

I wonder if the original cover can be electrocoated with a metallic overcoating...

Hi there,

can you post a pic of your cover, and how did you do it?

Thanks

brushed aluminum a la nokia 8890?

random_shots just cuz its carbon fiber doesnt mean its rice. carbon fiber is used on many manufactured items, mainly for its weight. lets not forget porshe and other highend cars come with carbon fiber interior parts, as well as the nsx-r, which has many carbon fiber parts.

Some people have expressed an interest in my painted P800. I have posted pics on http://noirgroup.hypermart.net/vader2.htm . This is a temporary fix until I get my Polished Sterling Silver case. If any of you want to have your case painted, please PM me. The case was painted using 2 latex based enamels.

Question for you guys who painted. Does the paint stay on or does it scratch off easily? I was about to do the same thing but I would hate to ruin the cover... or even melting it by using the wrong kind of paint. I do have a spare housing I could paint and put on.

The paint will stay on if you use sand down the P800 face and use a clear coat protectant. The scratches on my paint job are due to relatively large falls. I dropped my P800 on the pavement around 3 feet off the ground and It only had those small scratches on it.
