This worked for me just fine. However, it doesn't work with the USB cable, and that's all I have. I had to download the command line verison, and enter the IMSI into it, then store the code manually in my SIM.

Posted by: jmdomini

It works fine over IR as well. Other than it's debug mode stuff that's about all I can tell you. No documentation out there. Somebody here posted a site in another forum, but it was all in Czech.

Posted by: mch

I would have tried IR, but my laptop doesn't have an IR port.

Where is the monitor menu? I installed it and used the program sucessfully but I can't find the netmonitor menu anywhere in the phone?

Goto to menu, then press #, voila!

If you miss some options, go to configuration in the developer menu to select the desired options..

Posted by: OCbrody

hmmm...not there. has anyone gotten this to work on an AT&T locked S56?

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

I have it working on my s56 - see my avatar.

The program defaults to Code 2 - which is the limited menu. It would not work for me when I used Code 2. So I tried it again using Code 1 (all developer menus) and it worked for me I just press Menu #.

Here's what some of the screens mean... http://web.quick.cz/s45/sm/

I've got netmonitor on my s46 too, and the channel numbers are different with the s56. The s56's channel numbers now correspond with the channel numbers on my Nokia 5190's Field Test screens.

evanp90: Check out my link above, but from what I recall the developer menus don't have cell barr/discard like the Nokia's do.

Posted by: OCbrody

Yep that works. Thanks!

Posted by: evanp90

im still waiting on a data cable from ups. unfortunately u cant get one in south florida. So basicly what your saying is once you do access the net monitor theres no way to set the phone on cell bar discard? Is there anyway to make this fone pick up barred 850 towers? You think if i got a nokia 6200 and got into the net monitor i could set that on cell bar discard and get acces to all the great 850 towers that are barred? Does any1 know how to use the net monitor or anything else to make thew siemens s56 pick up barred towers? Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

I don't have an answer to your questions. But why would they barr the 850 towers? I would think they want to get them online as fast as they get the base station equipment.

If you have Infrared on your computer you could use the program using that.

Posted by: jmdomini

Know if any site that can do a good translation from Czech to English? I've been trying to translate that documentation without much luck.

Posted by: gfunkdave

Much of it is in English-oid, at least the Serving Cell and Neighbor Cell stuff.

i got my data cable and used the program when i hit menu # the first thing i see on the screen is mini monitor. is this correct is this the full net monitor? In my market we have not launched gsm yet. we are still strictly tdma. all the 850 towers are barred for testing or what not. however when i use my 6340i on cell bar discard mode i pick up the 850 towers according to the field test and they work very nicely. I cannot get them ith my s56. Im constantly on tmobile 1900 towers. any i deas on how to set the s56 to get access to these barred towers?

Posted by: bhmunroe

What is the best way for me to now monitor my reception strength?

Do you suggest I watch the RX number in the Serving Cell screen?

Anyone know how to translate that to Decibals?

Example. In my office my RX reading is: RX-086 to RX-096
Now I don't know if that is a good or bad reading. My suspicions are its a bad reading, because I have trouble hanging onto calls while at my desk here.

Comments, Advice?

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

The RX is the received signal strength in dBm.
-051 = the best signal strength
-113 = the worst signal strength

Looks like you're about in the middle.

On the other screen (CH / RL / C1 / C2 / NB), it shows the neighboring cell site channels under the "CH" column. The "RL" column is the same as RX on the Serving Cell screen minus the first 2 digits. So -096 would be shown as "96", -105 would be shown as "05". You'll notice the neighbor cells show progressively lower signal strengths as you go down the list.

Posted by: bhmunroe

Thanks for the great info!!

Ya while sitting here in my office the RX will jump up into the 100's. I might have to look at some kind of antenna to help the signal get out.

Do you know if these phones are set to look for the 850 towers first and then 1900? Is there a way to ckeck on that or correct that if its wrong?

Plus any suggestions on Antenna's would be appreciated.

thanks!

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

First, does Rogers AT&T have any GSM850 cell sites in your area yet? You would see them on your phone as channels 128-251. GSM1900 uses channels 512-810.

ASAIK, what frequencies it looks for first is set up by the carrier. Since ATTWS in the US has so much more GSM1900 than GSM850, the phones look for GSM1900 first.

Siemens makes a mobile holder with a antenna jack that fits in the antenna hole on the rear of the phone. I use the one that's made for the s46 with my s46, and I simply connect an external magnetic mount antenna to it - and position the antenna where I receive a steady, usable signal. But, as you can see by this post http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=169047 I haven't been able to get the same product that's available for the S56. Maybe you can help me find a way to get it. Got any friends in the UK?

Posted by: bhmunroe

Actually I do have a friend in the UK. Getting him to get one and send over here should not be an issue.

Rogers has plenty of 850 towers now in Ottawa. Now that I have Netmonitor running, how does one go about checking the channels? Is there a special step I am to do?

Plus - I will try to get a hold of my friend and see if he would be willing to buy some stuff and send it over here.

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

In the "Serving Cell" screen, your current channel number is the first item displayed - right after the "C". On the "CH RL C1 C2 NB" screen, the channels numbers are in the left-most columns. Do you see any in the 128-251 range, or are they all in the 512-810 range?

The item we need is the first item on this page https://communication-market.siemen...VDXL6UKJRPQ2VA0 The Siemens site uses frames, the link is to the frame. You can also find it by going to www.siemens.com/mobilestore and clicking on "United Kingdom" then accessories for the S55. I wonder how much it would be (in U.S. dollars) to aquire this item from the UK... £19.90 + Plus shipping.

I just sent Siemens UK an e-mail - maybe they can help.

Posted by: bhmunroe

Got a hold of my buddy in the UK and he will check into the cost to buy and ship those. Will keep you posted on that.

As for my settings I have the following right now at my desk.

C0134 RX-098 G21
CI 5CBE C1+20 93
LAI 030227 36B0
TXPWR33 RXAM-111
C2+19 BSPA5 BA15

So from what I can tell. Im on an 850 tower. But my reception is kinda crappy.

Still learning what all the rest says.

Would be nice to get that mobile holder with a nice antenna. Have you ever tried those glass mounted passive repeater types?

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

RE: the Mobile Holder Antenna, that would be great. I'll also let you know what Siemens says. Maybe they know of a North American source for it, or will ship it directly without having to go through a 3rd party.

Yes you're picking up a GSM850 signal. According to this http://web.quick.cz/s45/sm/ the last number on the first row has something to do with GPRS timing advance (how far you are from the cell tower). In my testing, the lower the number - the closer you are to the cell tower. But sometimes that number won't change unless a call or GPRS connection is made. So if "G21" is really accurate, you are quite a few miles from the cell tower, which is why your reception is bad. But I think the external antenna will help your situation.

Just curious what your other screen shows and if you have any other 850 or 1900 channels nearby. You can get to it be pressing either of the 2 softkeys under the screen.

Posted by: bhmunroe

CH RL C1 C2 NB
0131 02 09 10 73
0750 02 09 11 72
0138 90 21 21 77
0139 90 21 21 77
0144 95 16 16 72
0755 02 09 09 52
0754 03 08 08 56

Now the order of these keeps jumping around and the numbers change slightly, but this is basically what I am getting.

Do you have experience with a home antenna for when I am in my office?

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

Looks like you've got quite a few GSM850 signals for your phone to choose from, but none of them is dominant. An external antenna should definately help. I just re-read an old thread I participated in that you should find informative http://www.club-siemens.net/forum/v...d.php?tid=12777

Hey, RenoWirelessGuru. I noticed your avatar changed. Does that mean you also have net monitor running on the C56 or is that your S46?

Was there any difference in procedure?

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

I returned my S56 today - right on my 30-day limit. I'm back to using my s46.

Reasons for returning...
No Mobile Holder w/antenna connector available yet.
No GSM 850 in my area yet.

I figure if I wait 3 months or so, I can buy it again at 1/2 the price and hopefully all the accessories will be available, and maybe GSM850 will be up and running in my area by then.

Posted by: bhmunroe

Thats too bad you have to return it. However I can fully understand. Im lucky to have a bunch of 850 towers around, but you are correct, If I did not have those towers around - this phone would be challenging.

Im going to still work on getting some of those holders from the UK. But its a slow process.

Thanks for your help with regards to understanding the Netmonitor codes on my S56.

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

Yes, please keep trying to get the Mobile Holder w/Antenna jack. You'll definately see an improvement with it. When I got my s46 last year they already had the comparable accessory available for the s46. With it I lock into one strong signal from my house rather than the phone constantly switching around to a bunch of weak signals. I'll definately need it when I repurchase the phone in a few months - provided a better phone doesn't come out. But I don't see anything on the horizon. Please send me a PM when you get a price quote from your friend in the UK. That route still may be quicker than waiting for Siemens to release it in the U.S.

Hey guys,
I was doing some surfing around, and I found the link to this site from the other site that everyone here posts. I dont know if it has been posted, but it is a little easier to read than the other site with all the orange, as it does not have so much czech written and there are more explanations written in english. Sorry if it has been posted before.

Once you click on it, click on "tabu" on the left column, then click on "service menu" on the page that pops up.

Here's a direct link http://www.gasbag.wz.cz/mon/monxx.html
That website shows the screens for the older phones, but it's pretty much the same and gives you a good idea of what everything means.

Here's another link for the x45 series http://belnetmon.hostingpc.com/nm_siem.html which is partially in English.

Hey Reno, I just wanted to say that I found a discrepency with the best and worst signal strength. I have been in the 40's. Also i for the worst i have gotten 115, but couldnt make a call(yeh that's bad rf).

This guy also got about 40's when he was looking for BTS's. His page is on how to find a BTS. The paragraph is almost all the way down, under the "Looking for the unknown base station" paragraph.

how to find a bts page

Yeah, I think the -051 to -113 range was for my TDMA phone. GSM phones go beyond that. I think I've seen as low (high ?) as -35 or so when I've been within 100 yards of the BTS antenna.

That's a great link you posted. I've always wanted to know more about Timing Advance. He really goes into a lot of detail.

My mum's Ericsson TDMA can go down to the 30's while connected to the Telecom cell site thats just across the road from my house. Havn't figured out the maximum yet.

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

It looks like different phones have different thresholds.

Posted by: 666

do you know at what level the phone will totally unuseable? like -150 or ???

Posted by: RenoWirelessGuru

ATTWS in my area has set the phone's to be unusable and do a network search if signal goes below -107 to -111. The lowest signal I've seen on my s46 is -113.

Posted by: KiwiSurfer

Lowest on my Nokia GSM: -115.

It normally won't work below -107 through, since GSM calls will usually drop when the singal strength is less than -107db.
