8890 is a "world" phone i.e. it operates on both 900 and 1900 Mhz. The 8850 operates on 900 and 1800 Mhz.

that's not entirely correct...I know from experence that HK use both 8890 and 8850....my friend got a 8890 there..

There is a listing of GSM operators by country here: http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml
They list what frequency each operator runs on.

from my knowledge:
900/1800 is used by Asian, European, African, Oceania and some South America countries...
1900 works on North America...
