Will you ever tire of dumb MT questions?

okay, i never noticed this before, so please someone tell me i'm not insane. before i started my car today, i saw that it was still in 1st. so i dropped it to neutral — without using the clutch. "hmmm... " i also found i could move the shifter through all gears without the clutch, no problem.

of course, the engine wasn't running, and my hand brake was on ... but should i be able to do that? i was always under the impression that without the clutch, that shouldn't be possible.

just wondering if i haven't screwed up my car from the time i put it into reverse while moving at forward at 15km.

dude...you moved the shifter into every gear WITHOUT clutching out? I'd go out and make sure you can still drive your car now if I were you...it could mess up your transmission big time.

It's normal to be able to get into every gear while the handbrake is up and the engine is off. You can actually shift it into reverse while going forward? I tried that once and it just kept grinding.

LOL.. stop messing with him. I'd be scared *****less if someone told me my tranny broke.

Like PreFknLude_SiR said, it's normal to row through the gears without the clutch being depressed and the engine turned off. But how the hell can you go into reverse while going forward @ 15km/h without grinding????

oh there was grinding. totally horrible ****ing sound, too. see, i was kind of tired, and hadn't had my coffee yet ...

it's all here:

i may very well be the worst MT driver in vancouver. just tonight i started my car while in first, let up the brake, then popped the clutch.

Posted by: AM Radio

oh yeah. one more bonehead thing. stopped at a redlight, right foot on my brake. jammed the shift into first without the clutch. i heard a very brief grinding / crunching sound, but almost immediately, the engine went dead, mercifully. i seem to recall doing this to get the car in reverse once, as well.

i'm not kidding: either i get three cups of coffee into me in the morning, or i should not be driving until noon. worst. stick. driver. ever.

so ... when i take my car into get a new clutch and tranny, can i borrow YOURS? it's gotta be stick though.

As long as there is no torque in the driveline you should be able to move the shifter through the gears...

(also.. since the entire drive line is at the same rotational speed (ie.. 0) moving from gear to gear is easy.)

Don't take this badly but no ur not the worst MT driver, just very very careless. You must have some money to burn if you don't care about your car enough to use it properly.

And no, you can't use mine

on my old car i could run thru the gears without clutching while it was in motion.. provided the timing is right it does no damage.. so why would it do damage with the car off?

i wouldnt worry about it

Posted by: nx2k

why wouldn't it be possible to move it???
it's jus a stick.
as a matter of fact, it should be able to move through the gears when the car is in motion, now im not telling you to go out and do that. it's perfectly safe to do so if you know how to do it.
who says a clutch is a 100% neccessity of driving manual?

also, most cars will have a lockout of reverse, when going that fast, and when the car is in motion, most cars require double clutch from a gear to go into reverse. but either way you're not suppose to go into reverse from a complete stop anyways.

Powershifting!

Posted by: Maroon Beret

i think you can't powershift anymore with new cars - cuz they all have synchros to get the gears to mesh...

i've seen some of the race cars do that - but i've heard that they removed the synchros cuz they don't need them....

olders cars, and some trucks don't have synchros... that's why you need to double clutch to match the gear's revolutions before you shift in...

Thats completely not true. I drive a truck at work, a ford f650 with a 7 speed alison transmission. The only time i use a cluch it to start moving from a standstill (2nd and reverse). I'm not sure whats different with this transmission, but you can flatshift all day without grinding.

If your moving and you want to up shift, give it some gas while pulling the shifter out of gear. When it disengages, start pushing it into the gear you want to shift up to, when the rev's go down and are at the precise speed for that gear, the shifter will go into gear smooth as butter. Believe me if I had to constantly shift 7hrs a day, forget it, I would quit. Truck clutches are a lot harder to push, and the shifters are anything but short. I feel like im rowing a boat.

Like someone said earlier, when the engine is at the exact speed for the specific gear (matched rpm's), you can throw it in without it grinding. You just have to know your car really well, and be very VERY precise, or else your going to grind like crazy.
