Fido S40 locked?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello all, I'm new to the S40 realm, I just very graciously got an S40 from a friend...

-this phone was bought from Fido, (through phone, Fido direct) anyways, I've been reading that if your S40 is locked and you insert a non-original sim into your locked phone it will ask you for an operator lock code... now, I have an unactivated Rogers SIM, and when I put this in, it will display "Network Not Allowed",but won't say anything about entering a operator lock code... is this the same thing? or is my phone unlocked, and just the SIM is unregistered, is that the reason for this message... Cause I know that if I put the rogers sim in my Nokia 8890, it will give a "sim registration failed" which is normal...

This really doesn't matter to me, I'm really curious, maybe I'll go to the Rogers store and ask one of their salespeople to insert their activated SIM's to find the answer...

thanks

What's your variant code?

Remove the battery and on the white sticker next to the sim reader you'll see the following at the top:

SIEMENS S40 S##### - S#### - A###

The number that starts with A is your variant, from that we can tell what country or retailer it was intended for. I know you said Fido, but I'm just curious.

Well, have you checked to see if it's locked?

From idle press *#9103# to get the operator unlock prompt. If it does nothing that means it's not op locked. Have you checked the Network Selection settings? Heck, if worse comes to worst you might try resetting it.

To reset the entire phone, including deleting ALL phonebook and event entries, do the following:
1) Remove the back cover, battery and smart card
2) Replace the battery and back cover
3) Turn on the phone and press *#337#
4) The phone will show a status bar then turn itself off when done.
5) Put the sim back in and you're done.

hmmm... the number is A170.

-I did input the *#9103# earlier, and get nothing what would I look at in the "network settings" area? I enabled the eng menu and looked at the software, and I've got 3.2.0

I think it's unlocked! interesting.

You have a locked 8890?

I thought most of them were unlocked (even from FIDO).

no no, my 8890 isn't locked... but the SIM card from rogers is NOT ACTIVATED, so it will go Sim registration failed... if it were locked, it would've said "Sim Not accepted" for Nokias...

Well, A170 is a typical North American (unlocked) variant.

Might go through all the network settings and choose Cancel All.
Might also put Network Selection to Automatic.

thanks for the replies!

I don't think you understand, I'm using it with Fido(happily I might add) and was just wanting to find out if it was unlocked... that's the reason for the Roger's SIM. I'm not having problems with it, just curious... I guess it's unlocked! yay!
