PC integrated Bluetooth to P800 File transfer: Not Possible?

I know there are quite of few threads on connecting to your PC via bluetooth, but I haven't seen this specific problem addressed so:

I have integrated bluetooth on my laptop (not a dongle) and it is configured to com 0. Unfortunately the PC Link Software (mrouter) doesn't recognize com 0, even though it recognizes eight other virtual bluetooth ports.

After over a week of back and forth between Sony Ericsson and IBM the final answers I got were basically that there's no support for Windows XP (What?) concerning this specific problem and the integrated bluetooth will not work with the P800.

This is extremely frustrating. Has anyone had similar issues with their P800? If, so were you able to get it working?

thanks,

sadatx

Bad news. Not sure what "no support for WindowsXP" has to do with this.

I'm sure, after a week, you've gone through everything (including) pulling your hair out. Is there any way to change the laptop's use of COM0? Is that fixed? I mean, if you disabled IR or somesuch in the Thinkpad control panel -- would that do anything? Or is the BT hard-wired to COM0 and will never budge?

It's unlikely that Sony's gonna change the mRouter stuff anytime soon.

The only other, grasping at straws, thought I have (and it sounds suspicious to me) is -- is there some sort of COM Port redirector that might help?

Wish you luck. Can understand your frustration. Sorry I wasn't here with an answer.

But just a reply is good too .

Yeah I wasn't sure what the tech support guy meant by "no support for windows XP" either. He said that it might work if I had windows 2000 .

An inability to change the port is exactly the problem. SonyEricsson support told me that I had to call IBM and tell them I needed to change the port and IBM told me that the port was on COM 0 and could not be changed.

Major bummer.

I might have to suck it up and get a dongle.

I love technology .

Mine works fine - I can sync with my pc via bluetooth... although very slow compared to the sync cradle, and I can also use bluetooth neighborhood to drag and drop stuff to my p800. I'm using COM5 on my pc.

For those of you that want to buy a Bluetooth enabled laptop, the best bets are the Sony VAIOs. I currently use a C1MZX which has been more reliable than the TR1B,U101, and the new Z1RP. If any of you plan on getting the TR1B, or Z1RP, the Bluespace NE software unfortunately does not support modem profile which can be a problem if you want to connect your BT enabled phone to the laptop as a GPRS modem. It's nice to have an all-in-one solution but most times, the USB Bluetooth dongle may be the best solution.

Extra note: The Sony VAIOs do support file push through multiple COM ports. Just remember to configure Bluespace to get functionality. I also believe that there is no COM 0 on the VAIOs so VAIO users should have no problems with Windows XP.

Which model of IBM Thinkpad are you using?

Drivers for the following systems:

- ThinkPad R40
- ThinkPad T40
- ThinkPad T40p(*1)
- ThinkPad X31

can be found here : TP R40, T40/p, X31 - IBM Integrated Bluetooth II Software for Windows 98 SE/2000/XP

Hi Sadatx,

I think I discovered an inelegant solution to your problem. I have an IBM thinkpad t40p and a Sony Ericsson P800. I just got the P800 yesterday and have been up all night trying to configure it.

Once you get the message, "The Bluetooth serial port COM0 is now configured to connect to the device P800...", DO NOT CLICK ON THE OK BUTTON. If you wait a bit, your computer will give off a beep and your bluetooth system tray icon will turn green. Then you can synch and do whatever you wish with the two devices. As soon as you go back to the original message and click OK, the connection terminates.

I think the connection is initially setup on a higher COM channel, but IBM's software (the new Bluetooth II patch) switches you over to COM0 after you click OK.

This isn't a great solution but it seems to work rather well, as long as you can live with the "My Bluetooth Places" window remaining up while your two devices are connected.

Thanks for posting the original problem. It took me a while to even get as far as you got. Hope this helps...

I have just bought a belkin usb bluetooth adapter and when I installed it it gave me com0 and said it would only use com0 but the sony eric software said it did no see com0.
I unselected all the com ports selected in the connection window and reinstalled the belkin software I now get to choose com ports from 8 - 256.
I am on a tosh satellit 2410-504 with no physical com ports.
