Polyphonic sounds suck

I don't know what the big f*ing deal is with polyphonic ringtones. Yea, they sound great on the computer when you are fiddling with them, but the moment they make there way into your phone, they sound like ****. The only way you can get a good ringtone out of a polyphonic is if you change the instrument per channel to a high pitched one, similar to what you get with a standard default ringtone, and that is also about the only way you can hear it good enough if there is noise all around you.

My 2 cents, but polyphonic ringtones are overrated.

um... i don't know what cell phone you're using, but on the VX6000 they can get fairly loud without resorting to stupid tricks; certainly louder than my friend's Motorola v120.
Anyways, it's a nice feature to have. While I don't think it makes or breaks a cell phone, they're fun to have; and giving individuals their own ringers is actually a very useful way to ID them without even looking at the phone. But hey, if a monophonic piezo speaker is more your style, suit yourself.

Here is the situation with my phone, a 4400.

The standard ringers are loud as f*ck. I have to turn my on low and its still loud. Then if I use a ringtone I download online, and put it on my phone, I have to have my volume all teh way up just to get decent Loudness level.

Whatever midis you are using on your phone, send one to me bk38@evansville.edu and let me try it out, but I have downloaded several off the internet, and I have to put them into a program and fiddle for a while increasing the volume, etc..

here's one that i've found to be really f-ing loud. There's also a thread here about "loud-ifying" MIDIs; may want to take a look at that. Most of the ones up at http://vx6000.owns.it are pretty loud (and I theoretically could've made most of them louder). Your results may vary with the 4400. And yeah, most MIDIs on the internet aren't nearly loud enough without messing with volumes and note velocities.

Any of you guys ever tried qcp files? You can convert your mp3 to wav, then wav to qcp. You could edit it just to get the chorus if you wanted though. Anyway, I have Baby's "What happened to that Boy" on my LG 5350. It sounds exactly like the original, with words and everything. Although there is a small amount of distortion due to the low bitrate. It's amazing for a $50 phone though.

i've tried .qcps, but when I try sending them to the phone through pix messaging, it drops the attachment. I think the problem is the encoding type that Outlook gives in the email for the attachment... but anyways, it should work fine once the cable comes out, hopefully.

For now the 6000 won't work with qcps. the 4400 probably does, though.

one thing i noticed with the ringtones on my LG VX6000 is that any midi's with loud deep bass notes cause horrible distortion and screw the sound.

Higher pitched notes sound great thou, so just edit the instruments that produce deep bass with anvil to play soft, while making the higher pitched ones louder.

Worked well for making the attached midi that I use louder, unfortunatly I do miss the loud bass as it sounds alot better on the pc.

I guess it has somthing to do with just a single crappy speaker they use for the ringtones, especially when low and high pitched tones play over the same speaker area, maybe they should make a phone with a bass speaker and a smaller tweeter to correct the distortion...?

i'll take the smaller phone over the one with higher sound quality for the ringtones, thank you very much. As much of an audiophile as i am for real music... while i'd love high-quality speakers in mobile devices, if it comes at the cost of size (and it always does), count me out.
of course, if someone can make a vx6000 in the same footprint with a 120-watt amp and 15" woofer with separate tweeter, let me know .

Well, I know QCP files wont work using Bitpim cause it only recognizes midi files. For the 4400, not sure how I would get a qcp file to it without the cord and the computer.

What is a good program that will take an mp3 to a qcp file? I might give it a try

Thanks
Bryan

The only way to get mp3s to qcps is to convert to 8000 khz 8-bit wav first (you can use Winamp's built-in DiskWriter plugin to do that) and then open and convert it in Qualcomm's free PureVoice software (open the wav and press alt+shift+c). Search around the forums tho - see if anyone's done this sort of thing before.

just found it and tried it. From listening to it, not sure if I would want that on my phone. I guess what you could do is open up the mp3 in an editor, I have Creative Soundblaster on my cpu, so I might try that, then I will eliminate the bass and then try to re-convert it.

Hmm, a 15in sub, sounds nice Wonder if I could hook up the 10in in my trunk to my phone , probably not

so .qcp files for sure can't be sent by email? or just with outlook?

my friend has a sprint phone with a little bit of a song with words, but i thought it was really cool. if .qcp's can be sent like a .mid, im willing to make edit some .wav files.

well i didn't mean exactly that

more just like a even smaller speaker to handle higher pitched sounds, because the horrible distortion you get is cuse by too much trying to be played over the vx6000 one tiny speaker.

And i'm sure the cost to add somthing like this to LG is very inexpensive, but to us the consumer... thats another story

I understand where you are coming from but I did notice that it take the right QCP file to sound good. I checked in soundforge and noticed several lows and highs were not very pronounced so I modified them before converting them to QCP and they are much better now. I also put two standard old style phone rings at the beginning of the qcp so I can hear it no problem even when my phone is in my pocket. I love having my phone announce the name of the caller so I don't even have to look at my phone to know who is calling.

You CAN send them through e-mail, even with Outlook, you just have to change the file extension to .mid. The phone is still smart enough to figure out what format the data is in and play it as a qcp file.

Only problem is that I can't seem to get them to play on the external speaker once I've saved them from the incoming message to the phone.
