Samsung SGH-i500 -vs- Treo 600

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I understand that both phones are to be released in the near future. Both seem to have very similar specs including Palm OS 5.2, GSM tri or Quad band, digital camera, GPRS, WAP, etc. Major difference between the 2 appears to be that Treo has a key board.

Given that my main uses are phone, basic Palm functions (address, calendar, tasks, memo, calc, etc) and given that I travel international very frequently I am leaning towarrds the SGH-i500 due to its smaller size and protection of the key board and screen.

What I would like to know are opinions from those considering either as to which one you would choose and why?

Thanks and regards.

You're right, the SGH-i500 and Treo 600 are very similar in features and functionality.

The pros for the i500 would be form factor and removable battery. Main pro for the Treo is that it has the QWERTY keyboard. But then again, some people swear by Graffiti and can use that faster than a keyboard. For those people, that's another plus for the i500. Personally, I love the keyboard because I never put the effort into learning Graffiti and I don't feel like starting now.

The deciding factor for me is that the i500 is GSM and Treo will come in GSM and CDMA models. I use Sprint and have no plans on switching to a GSM carrier. If the SPH-i500 (CDMA version) had the same specs as the SGH, then I would have a hard decision to make as to which one I want. But as it is now, I'll be getting the Treo 600.

For folks who use GSM 850...there are but 2 choices for smartphones...Nokia 3600 or Treo 600

I am leaning towards the I500 over the Treo 600

I currently have a Samsung s105 and feel that this is one of the best phones I have ever used. Samsung makes pretty user friendly phones.

I have used a treo once or twice beforehand (Treo 270) and feel that it is a phone 2nd, palm first

that being said, I am waiting to see how the look and feel of the Treo will be and whether they have made a phone which also incorporates a palm versus the other way around

How can you use this phone with the Palm OS?
Curious

Thanks

FWIW, Handspring has said they've completely redesigned the Treo to be a phone first. Personally, I think the Treo 270/300 are right in the middle. Not really PDA first, not phone first either. This time Handspring claims to have changed that, not only in form factor, but in functionality as well. We'll see what happens in a couple months.

Oh, the 600 is a phone signifacantly more than a pda.... not to say that is is an unreliable PDA....Palm OS 5. The 300 was definately a bit more tiring to use though, and the issue has been addressed. For example, numbers on the favorites list are now also assigned quick dial letters. Further, contacts are chosen as favorites rather than just names and numbers allowing for multiple numbers to be stored on one button.

3600 is a smartphone, that's all 600 and 3600 are the only smartphone options. 3600, V600, V500, T616, and S56 are the only options for integrated bluetooth at this point too, with 2 of those not available yet.

And the SE P800. As far as just phones, the T68/T68i, T39, and the Motorola 270c are all BT cvapable.

@ SciMan

true, they have BT but they are not GSM 850 capable

I would love to get either of these phones however I am not so sure they will even be out this year. I keep waiting and waiting and waiting.. By the time they do come out I prob will not even want a PDA phone...

just wait till the actual phone is out, then we can compare it heads on, well, if we are going to compare the specs....its kinda useless....

But handspring does have many innovative features.

For instance they have setup their SMS like an instant messenger chat (even with emoticons --> )

Plus handspring has gone to great lengths to make the treo 600 usable without a stylus.

Treo 600 ALL THE WAY!

I don't like the thumbboard, I'd rather use Graffiti. I like the stylus.

So it just takes different styles to please us all.

It sure would be neat if they could assign a voice command to palm applications from the stand by menu. Or maybe they could just create the first ESP PDA OS for GSM...

I wish somebody would release a 850/1900 sled like the Europeans have for their T|T's...900/1800. A N.A. sled would be f***in cool

One very cool thing that the 600 will have going for it is suport for the Goodlink Server / Client System.

This is the Blackberry type system that many companies have switched to including Dell.

I use the g100 and love the intergration with my exchange enviroment.

This may be the first time I get to only carry 1 device.....

I probably will buy either one of those phones days after they are released. I'm disappointed neither support bluetooth. I think they make bluetooth for the expansion card, has anyone tried that?

The existing bluetooth SD cards don't support Palm OS5 so they won't work with the Treo 600. The i500 has no SDIO slot so existing cards won't work. Rumor has it that Palm and some other companies are working on new bluetooth SD cards that will work with OS5 and presumably the Treo 600.

Phone Scoop seems to think that the SGH-i500 will support SD cards.

I meant the SPH-i500, the CDMA version for Sprint.

I just got a Treo 600, and I must say, the ability to use the thing without always having to take out the stylus is a GREAT feature. The last thing I wanna do when I'm outside is to always have to take out the stylus just to do some simple stuff. Besides, always having to take out the stylus really makes you look like a dork.

The thumb pad works wonders and the mini keyboard is great too, although a bit small.

This thread should really be the SGH-i505 vs the Treo 600 as the SGH- i500 will not be released. The i505 has a swivel display.. Kinda cool..

Posted by: 7ss

The SGH-i500 is still going to be released but it is the European model. The SGH-i505 is the model destined for the U.S. but it should be possible to use the i500 on the U.S. GSM networks if you buy one overseas. Considering the much better specs of the i500 it might be worth the trouble for 324x352, external lcd and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The i505 doesn't have any of that.

Posted by: goofrider

just wanna add that the Treo 600 has a proper SDIO slot. the SGH-i500 has no memory card slot whatsoever.

More importantly, the Treo 600 is shipping NOW. The SGH-i500 was announced 7 months ago, and will not be shipping until 2004 in Europe.

http://msmobiles.com/news.php/1470.html

According to the article above, it seems the SGH-i500 will never ship in ths US, Samsung announed the SGH-i505 for the US market, which does have an SD slot, plus 32MB RAM.

The SGH-i500 does have an SD slot. No word yet on if it's SDIO but definitely memory capable.

Must have confused it with the SPH-i500 (and I'm sure I'm not the only one!!!)
