Serial SERVICE cable to DATA cable help!

Can someone send me detailed instructions to change a service cable to a data cable that i can use pc tools to edit phone book with? I tried applying 5v to pin 4 and 10 and it still doesn't work in pc tools. Times out. Also, does anyone have the pinouts for a data cable, com port pin number to phone connector pin number. Thanks.
