Vox 8500 and Data Cable

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: baldbear

Hello,

I purchased the data cable for the 8500, and sadly Virgin Mobile had Audiovox remove all the data transfer capabilities of the phone.

If anyone has any idea how to turn them back on PLEASE state so here! I would really like to edit my contact list!

Thanks!

P.S. By removed I mean you can't find the phone at all with it attached to the cable, the cable is found (it's a usb device that translates to a serial port). But the phone is not. Also this is the EXACT same cable that the 8300 uses, so if you find an 8300 cable you have the 8500.

Does anyone know of any other programs that I could use than the ones supplied by Verizon?

I just asked in the Marketing department and you are so right, they did
take out ALL data capabilities from the Virgin Mobile 8500. You cant
even use the Phone Book Editor part of it. You should return the data
kit.

Is there someone there at Audiovox who can contact Virgin Mobile (as a
customer, I'm pretty much told I am stupid when I've talked to them).

Please find out if this phone will connect to the cable, if it can than
I can just return it, and get a different one.

Thanks.

You are right again, the Virgin Mobile phone has a completely different
set of functions than the regular CDM8500. I have never heard that
they disconected the ablility of the data cable.

Wow you guys are fast responders!

It is a Virgin Mobile phone and they said (which I stated in a previous
post), that they have removed the ability to connect a cable. Is there
a key sequence to put it back? Or is Virgin lying to me?

There is nothing wrong with the phone as far as I can tell, Virgin
Mobile's 8500 has a different menu than the 8500 in my manual has too,
they have removed many things (screen savers, ringtones, data connection?)

You are right, the PhoneBook Editor portion of the software should not
be carrier specific or require Data Service from the carrier. I dont
know why it does not recognize your phone. Whom did you purchase it
from, Audiovox or your carrier? Give us a call at 1 800-229-1235. You
may have to send it in for replacement.

Customer (w s) - 08/08/2003 11:05 AM
Um, I've said this before I don't really need data service (well it
would be nice), all I want to do is import/export my contacts to the
phone.

I talked with customer support (very friendly by the way), and they
said that because the kit I have (MOK8300VW), is for Verizon Wireless that
perhaps that is the problem, but I really doubt it, because all I want
is the phone book manager to work. I can't imagine that that is carrier
specific. Is it? Where can I exchange this disk if it is?

Response (DPRATT) - 08/08/2003 11:02 AM
The MOK-8300 is the correct data cable for the CDM8500. If Virgin
Mobile does not offer data service you wont be able to use that cable. Data
service is dependant on the carrier.

Customer (w s) - 08/08/2003 10:31 AM
I tried that, I will try calling today. According to Virgin Mobile the
data cable will not work with that phone, even if it is the 8500. I
checked under the battery and it is an 8500VM if that makes a difference.

Any other ideas? I noticed the phone book app has an ini file with
phones listed?

Response (DPRATT) - 08/07/2003 01:06 PM
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the software on your PC. If still no
good, call us at 1 800-229-1235 for service.

Thanks with that, but I do have a request throught their product
support.

But I can't even find my phone to use the Phone Book Manager software,
the cable is recognized but the phone can't be found...Is there a trick
to it? I have the phone on... The Data service would be nice but I
really wanted the ability to edit the phone book.

This is an excellent post. Very imformative.

I should have read this before I purchased the MOK8300 Data Kit.

I too just want is use the quicklink phonebook manager.

Virgin is definately lacking in this area.

======================
Thank you for contacting Virgin Mobile!

Unfortunately, our phones just aren't set up for using the data cables.
Though it may say compatible with that series, our phone have been
specially modified for us here at Virgin Mobile USA to make it
compatible with our systems. This of course causes it to not work with
data cables such as you are trying to use.

At this moment, Virgin Mobile does not have a special data cable that is
compatible with our software. I would like to apologize for this
inconvenience.

My reply:

I guess I need to get a different phone and/or change my service.

I would like to suggest Virgin Mobile fix this problem. You are very lacking in this area. There are posts on many different forums complaining of this problem with your Virgin Mobile phones. How hard could this be? It would be great PR and good for your business. I use my laptop everywhere. I would like to use my vox8500 phone to connect to my ISP.

It seems that a data cable and software to at least organize ones phone book, schedule and ring tones should be offered at a minimum. It is difficult and time consuming to add, edit a large contact list with the phone itself.

This is very frustrating.

Please pass this email onto you managers and your company president.

Ok, here is an update.

I can get Gagin to find the phone, but it has 3 empty directories..

\en \es and \shared

I can create dirs, copy up files, and delete them.

So close but so far...Anyone know of another app I can use?

Why would Virgin Mobile be so stupid to do that?

Don't the know they're losing customers with that?
