If I buy an S56, is the GPRS ALWAYS active(wasting battery)?

I might be getting one of these soon, but I don't want to be stuck with the phone only lasting for a day. Can the GPRS be inactive except for when I want to connect my iPAQ to it?

Anyone?

not sure about the S56, but I've had an S55, and now currently a new SL55, and for both I have the option to turn off the GPRS. I wouldn't see a reason for anyone to disable this option to turn off the GPRS on the 56 series... even with the GPRS active, I still get a long battery life with either phone...

AT&T locks it on for their branded s56. Pretty sure there's a thread about it in either this or the AT&T forum.

I just Bought a AWS branded Siemens s56 from Best buy. the phone was locked but there is no browser lock.

This is an interesting question.

On my S56 (Cingular), I can't disable the GPRS function. In fact, I had to call into them, and ask for my account to be 'provisioned', at which point, I also got access to their (somewhat lame) website called 'My Wireless Window'.

Does anyone know a way around this? I'd like the battery life to be extended any way I can, and for all that I use GPRS, it's not worthwhile. I haven't found that the data transfer rate on GPRS to be any better than what I get over using the phone as a dialup modem via Bluetooth.

I was referring to GPRS being locked on without the ability to turn it off.

i think youre right. this is probably the reason i cant access csd. i hadn't realized that the deactivate option was not there.
i am able to access gprs just finethough.

battery life is still pretty good. i wouldn't worry about that. mine
is still pretty solid.

why would they lock the browser on? to me it would make more sense to lock the browser.

Wild guess, but I think I read you can only have GPRS on or off. Nokia has a setting which turns it on when needed. If you had GPRS off and you tried to access mMode, would it activate gprs and connect? If it wouldn't, I can see why AT&T would lock it on, so people wouldn't have any trouble spending money on data usage.

On my S56 it is always on. I thank AT&T always has it on and seems to force it on whether you want it or not. I would not worry about the battery life on the S56 as it lasts forever.

On my v60i if I put my AT&T SIM in it the GPRS indicator is always on. If I put my T-Mobile SIM in it the GPRS indicator is off. It must be something AT&T is doing on their network.

well,
According to the owners manual, there should be a setting that allows you to activate/deactivate the gprs. On my handset, it isnt there, same like on my 3595, some of the options that TMO doesnt support arent there. But even on the 3595, the gprs can be disabled when i want.

The batt life is ok as long as you arent talking. as long as you are in service area its ok. I finally got my weekend with it, and it did ok, not as well as id hoped but it'll do for now.
