I am piling up rollover minutes from Cingular and I was wondering if there was a way to use the S56 as a non-GPRS modem, just straight dial-up via the IR or BT.

Hey, guys! New user here, been lurking for a while, but it looks like this is the place to be.
Erik, if you'll take some feedback from a new poster, I have the S56, and use it successfully as a non-GPRS modem. From what I can tell, how it works is dependent on the BT card you have in your laptop.
I'm using the Belkin BT card, and it automatically installed a DUN connection in WinXP. The dialup connection manager software from my ISP (ATT) recognized the BT modem, and I simply created an additional dialup profile to "point" to the BT modem. When using the dialer software, it finds the phone, engages, dials, and connects, as though I were on a landline.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
Is there a way to do that through IR? If not... I'll have to buy a BT adapter for my notebook.

Yes, you can use the phone as a modem via IR, but I wouldn't recommend it, because of the line-of-sight requirement. Trust me... the BT works great, and not only as a modem, but also for data synchronization between the phone and Outlook.

Well... until I get the BT card, I want to see how it is with the IR. How do you set it up as an IR modem?

Erik, that'll take me a little while to remember how I did it. Things will likely be hectic tomorrow, since it's a 1/2 day for us, so if you can't figure it out, and nobody else chimes in, give me another day or so to rack my brains.

Erick, I'm not sure what OS you're running on your laptop, but with WinXP, all you need to do is to place the S56 in front of the IR port, and presuming you have it enabled on both ends, XP will see the phone, and install it as a modem automatically. All you'd need to do, then, is to use your existing connectivity software on your PC.

You will need to go to the control panel and install a modem. Since I could not find an INF file for the S56 I used a generic 9600 modem and it works fine. Make sure that you select the right Virtual Com port. This is for WIN98

I guess when I installed the Siemens Data Suite, it installed the S56 as an S45 on COM4 (my IR port).
But when I try to dial out, it gives me an error that the host computer can't connect. Is there some connection string or number I have to put before my ISP's number?
I'm on XP Pro.
