How do I build an S40 data cable?

Is there a way to do this by myself?
I guess that the connectors for the phone side are the same with the power adapter.
I plan to buy another power adaptor and modify the other end - or better to make a RJ11/serial adapter and use the same cable.
I hope I don't talk like I'm from another planet - I just got my s40 and I can not find a data cable at a reasonable price anywhere.
Thank you.

well, I think that you canīt make a datacable of a poweradapter because if you look good at the plug of the adapter it has only two small metal plates and thatīs not enough to transport data between some other device, like a laptop or handheld.
I think you have to buy a siemens datacable and than you have to connect another datacable of your laptop or handheld to the wires of the siemens cable.
maybe is the following link a good start:
iPaq to S40

The cable isn't really THAT expensive considering you can hook up to Outlook, modify your startup logo, upload ringtones, manage your phonebooks and messages, etc.
Building a cable yourself is a good idea but is it really worth the trouble? Check out shopping.yahoo.com and do a search for the S40 cable - you might find some good deals. But be CAREFUL about buying one that's too cheap. I once made that mistake and wound up with a cable that didn't work at all. That made me $40 poorer. Then I got one that cost about 20 bucks more but got the original Siemens cable as is evident on the box it came in - now everything works fine.

Maybe you could consider the IrDA device, it does the samething as the data cable but much cheaper.

anyone know of a good place to buy an IR addon for a PC?
any site that ships to canada would good =P

The original Siemens cable is ~100EURO.
If I buy something from yahoo only the shipment will be around 40$ (I'm in Romania). Same for IR devices. (i've tried to buy a software that was 60$ and they asked for shippment 75$)
It seems stupid to make a phone that works with Outlook, not shipped with cable (only IR) but doesn't work with PocketPC or Palm - I've tried more than 20 devices. I don't have a laptop yet and i want a backup for my phone data - the rumors are it crashes form time to time. :-)
I like the phone but the cable is expensive.
The cable than costs almost as the phone - I've paid 170$ for the phone - one cable I can do myself.
Now, the question - why do I need more than 2 wires for data transfer?
In the diagram for the Ipaq it seems like it uses all of the pins. As I remember from the serial link cables I only used 2 or 3 wires to link 2 PC's. Anyone?
Thank you.

I've stumbled on this one before, see if it helps you:

There's an S40 cable schematic in there.

59.00 USD from siemenscordless.com buys your time and the fact that you don't have to worry about causing non-warranty damage to your phone or computer.
I bought one, so far it's been worth every penny. Sure I wish those cheap fools at Siemens had sent one with it like their Euro phones, but oh well.

Thank you all.
As Domo put it, in the original power cable there are only the power wires. Bad Siemens...
I am left with two choices:
1 - buy some new connectors an build a cable thanks to normandeli's link.
2 - for some 40$+ (withc is more than a home made cable and 40$ shipment :-) ) to buy an Irda device.
In case i change my phone later i could still use the device. That's if the irda will not leave the place for a bluetooth or so.
Ok - any cheap and good Irda? Best an Usb2Irda thing.
Thank you again.
I'll keep you updated - i'll look around for the connectors and Irda in local shops to save the shipment. If i build the cable i'll let you know the facts.
