Hello, I'm trying to get my Linux box to connect with the USB cradle that comes with my p800, but with little success.
I've worked the web, and I've found pages that either flat out say it can't be done (http://mobile.linux.pt/p800/) or give a pppd solution that doesn't work despite my hardest efforts (http://p800.gesel.nu/).
I was wondering if anyone has had any sucesses with talking to the phone over USB.
Thanks!

Hi gatorfan
I have also read the discouraging info. So for now I have given up on getting it to work. Without having tried.
I have read though, that it could be done using a bluetooth dongle. I might try that at some point.
Anyways, once you get it to work with your usb cable, dont hesitate to post a simple howto
You are not alone

Well, I do have good news. I HAVE been successful in connecting to the p800 over my USB cable by following the directions from here:
http://p800.gesel.nu/
It turns out that I didn't have hotplugging support in my kernel, so the usb cradle wasn't getting recognized when I plugged it in. In hindsight, just having it plugged in when I restarted my computer also would have done the trick. It's important to have the proper USB modules compiled in (module or otherwise). The page has directions on which one.
This creates a serial connection through the device /dev/ttyUSB0. The page gives details on how to transfer files through this serial link, but I've been unsuccesful in doing this. If the device doesn't appear, but you're sure the usb cradle has been recognized, you can do this (as root) to create the device manually:
mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 0
The other page give directions to create a PPP connection which I was able to do. Unfortunately it times out after one minute, and every attempt at "keeping alive" fail.
Okay, so I've got a short-lived PPP connection between the phone and the computer, but I've been unable to do anything with it. I'm about to attempt some of the SyncML stuff on the page, but the future looks grim...
If you have any luck, let me (us) know..
