how long to charge cell phone for first time to ensure long life

Hi,
i just got my c56 and i am not sure how long to charge it.
i have searched and i have found posts about how long to charge a cell phone in general, but not for the first time.
the instructions only say 4 hours but i have seen some websites say 12 and others say 24. and ive seen some websites say if you charge it too long, it damages the battery.
so which is right?

8 hours is sufficient i guess

Charging it for 8-10 hours the first time is fine.

um lol what if you did charge it for 24 hours? I hope that doesn't cause any damage, most sales ppl recommend that. Fido recommends that as well but then says charging for too long will reduce battery life or damage it....
