S55 PC hookup problem

hi all,
just tried hooking up my S55 to the PC,and the datasuite doesnt see the phone at all.
hooked up using a USB cable,with the USB to serial driver installed(that came with the cable),device manager claims everything is ok.
latest version of datasuite from siemens,scans for phone but doesnt find anything.
i assume the phone just has to be switched on,or do you maybe have to activate some option in the phone ??
any help would be much appreciated.

I am actually using SL55 and am using IrDa to hookup to my laptop but found that it takes awfully long time for the Data suite program to recoqnize the phone.
