The name Bluetooth

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Why on earth did they name Bluetooth after a 10th century Viking ?

Posted by: Appleman

Cause he helped people communicate:

Harald Bluetooth, a Viking and king of Denmark from the years
940 to 981, was renown for his ability to help people communicate. During his reign, he united Denmark and Norway.

Posted by: brain_scientist

He had it easy: no Microsoft burdened devices to wrestle into communication...

Posted by: DslrMark

And he had BlueTeeth. "TechTv"

Posted by: Rasmus

His name was Harald Blåtand :d

Helped people communicate? my a**

Posted by: FBI

Well, learn something new everyday. Didn't know it was named after a viking.

Here's more history about Harald Bluetooth:

Why is it called Bluetooth?
Harald Bluetooth was king of Denmark in the late 900s. He managed to unite Denmark and part of Norway into a single kingdom then introduced Christianity into Denmark. He left a large monument, the Jelling rune stone, in memory of his parents. He was killed in 986 during a battle with his son, Svend Forkbeard. Choosing this name for the standard indicates how important companies from the Baltic region (nations including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) are to the communications industry, even if it says little about the way the technology works.

Posted by: Rasmus

Wtf Denmark is not in the Baltic region

Neither are Sw, Norw and Finland

Posted by: TriBand81

Oh dear looks like whoever wrote that description needs to go back to geography class lol

Posted by: EL PAALO

Aren't they on the Baltic Sea?

Are you thinking of the Balkans?

EDIT: Your location is Denmark, so I'll assume you know what you're talking about. However, to an outsider looking at a map, everything in the area looks like it could be considered part of the Baltic Region.
Norway, I could understand you arguing against, but eastern parts are part of what's called the baltic sea drainage basin. It's also part of the peninsula that creates the Baltic Sea.

Here's a map:

Harold Bluetooth was a bridge builder.

Posted by: Zuffox

It is also said that he convinced the - at that time - heathens of the power of God (the one and only ) by slotting his hand into a glove and placing it in a fire.

When he removed the glove, there was not a simple piece of scorched skin o anything like that, the hand had taken no damage from the fire.

His point by doing this - apparently, stupid thing - was to prove that his - Christian - God would make sure that he wasn't harmed.

Thereafter, the heathens were convinced, and yada-yada, here we are now...

Don't you just love stories like that?

And if the forum "Bluetooth" was to be spelled correctly, it would probably look a bit screwed up, since it would require the use of the letter "å".

"Harald Blåtand", sounds pretty lame, doesn't it?

Lets keep it English.

Ok here is the story.
They had a little blue lite blinking on the device so they were going to call it blue lite, K-Mart had a fit. then the lite bulb went on and it became blue stuff, marketing had problems with that. Along came the American association of denistry gave them 1 million $ and they settled on Blue Tooth. The morale of this story is dont belive everything you read But have fun reading it.

Lots of info about Harald Bluetooth at the above link and Jelling where the rune stone he raised to honor his parents is located.

Posted by: friedbrains

heres another story....

Bluetooth was developed by Ericsson, because they are not selling much phone at that time, so they deiced to augment their income by selling accessories like Bluetooth....

Posted by: death_entry

YOUR ALL WRONG

It was called bleutooth simply because he united everything together. Bluetooth is a a technology from the start has been made by a group of organisations (eg ibm etc) that wanted to make a way of connecting different devices together in a uniform fashion.

I suspect this is the reason why you need to obtain licenses for your bluetooth dongle so they can make sure that everyone is using the same standard.

hence why you can connect a phone to a pda, ur pc or ur fridge!!

the point was all these companies have come together just like bluetooth had did.

Posted by: walkguru

well anyways its a cool name

Posted by: Baseballfanz

King Bluetooth invented the 1st cell phone two cans with no string attached between them.

No, no, no...BlueTooth is the ******* son of Infared and GreyMatter. They had a falling out. The dysfunctional gene skipped a generation, so we got lucky. You were very close though.

Posted by: Eddyisgreat

Who cares how it came about
Most people today think that bluetooth is only the headset, and i dare you to change their mind
"look at that guy talking on his bluetooth"
He isn't talking on a bluetooth hes talking into a headset w/ bluetooth that connects to his phone (via bluetooth)
"nu uhh"
>.>

Edit : And u don't look like a H@X()Rz when you walk around in the mall with it strapped to your lobes!

Posted by: jbelanger

are you familiar with the Sony Ericsson w600i and its bluetooth response option

Posted by: jbelanger

If Sweden and Finland are not in the Baltic region, then there's truly something rotten in Denmark.

Posted by: PhonePimpBill

Someone was drinking a grape soda while inventing it and thought "Aha!"

Posted by: BigFatDude
