OK - Which VX6000 cable to buy already?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Nethead28

I have read all posts about the different cables for the VX6000, but still do not know what each will or will not do (specifically). Can someone who has used both, maybe make a list?

Never mind the price, we all know Verizon kit/cable is $70, the futuredial 1200 cable is $29, and the 1XEXPRESS cable (if it ever comes out)(and you preordered) will be $35.

OK - so we have 3 cables right? One comes with software (Verizon cable). The others will use Gagin or Bitpim? (downloadable).

Can someone who has tested cables and specifically knows what each cable will or will not do, or what software will or will not work with said cable. please make a list. I am sure everyone wanting a cable would like this information before buying a cable.

Which cables works with what software?
Which cable best for Express Network?
Which cable/software works for transfers - ringtones - pictures etc..?
Which cable/software for syncing data? phone book etc...
Which cable/software for editing phone text? etc...
etc... etc... etc...

Thanks,
Nethead29

Ok - what if everyone just posts what they know for sure, from using each cable and or software and we make a list after that ?

yah im looking for the same inforrmation... can people start posting whatever they know about their current cable?

Ok, I have a VX6000 that I purchased off eBay about three weeks ago.

I bought the Mobile Office Kit directly from Verizon late last week for $73.99 including shipping. I got my kit/cable this past Wednesday.

I'm using the LG USB Drivers from the CDROM supplied by Verizon... I run Windows XP on my desktop and Windows 2000 on my laptop.

1: I setup my plan to use Express Network from my minutes without having to pay a flat fee. I connect from my laptop with my cell phone to the Express Network and it's great. I speedtest at around 125 to 130k download and 90 to 120k upload. It works great dialing with the built-in dialers in XP and 2000 (not using the Verizon software) to #777 using <myphonenumber>@vzw3g.com as my username and "vzw" as my password.

2: I have tried to use GAGIN, but can only access the sound directory on my phone, nothing else. No other files appear at all! Can't get to the pictures either.

3: BitPim errors out no matter what. It gives me some error messages that talk about the VX4400 and files from the 4400. Can't do squat with this BitPim program yet. I have read that if I uninstall the LG USB drivers and install the Futuredial USB drivers then GAGIN and/or BITPIM will work, but haven't tried that yet.

4: There is software included with the Verizon kit that allows sync with Outlook! This software is included with the Verizon kit/cable and it works great! I haven't had any issues with it yet. It's even good for manually editing the phonebook on your phone from your PC (without syncing with Outlook)...

My main goal now is to be able to both upload and download pictures to/from the phone...

That's my input!

I use the cable on my powerbook g4 to connect to the internet, and on my wintel xp box to mess with gagin/bitpim and files. the only complaint i have is the express network speeds are around 60kbps (plenty fast for web surfing & emailing) because the cable emulates a serial connection. I had an a530 and and futuredial cable and with that combo and my powerbook g4 would get d/l and u/l speeds of over 100kbps. thats the only "complaint" i have with the futuredial1200 cable, and its not very major to me

Geez! I thought more than 2 people had cables already on this forum.

How about someone doing a poll that knows how to, with the right choices listed to help the rest of us looking to purchase a cable make the right choice?

300 views and only 2 replys about cables??? So 290+ people much be interested in buying a cable ? Should be enough of an interest for people with cables to help.

Thanks to the two of you that took the time to let us know your findings.

to you two!

My best answer:
Q: What is better a truck or a car?
A: Depends what you want to do with them.

Neither cable or related software drivers does it all, not yet anyway.
You need to pick the one that best suites your needs.
Want to hack the phone? Go w/ the futuredial cable. .
Want to sync to Outlook? Go for the VZW cable and the included drivers/software.

EDIT:
Wait a tick… Major Brain Fart
Another option is to buy the VZW cable, install the VZW software on one computer and the futuredial software on another. Assuming you have 2 computers.
That’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Have been reading the assorted cable threads. I would like to be able to do three things with a cable :
1) synch outlook address book
2) synch outlook calendar
3) exchange pics and tones with PC and phone
Is the LG cable and supplied software able to do all three ?
Thanks, for the clarification ...

Posted by: stanmawyer

I just installed the cable from Verizon today.

First, it will let you COPY your address book and then send it to the VX 6000. Note that it DOES NOT SYNC the data bases. If you update on the phone, and also update something else on the PC (Outlook) you will lose one of the updates when you try to "sync" the two.

Second, the supplied software does not support calendar sync, or copying for that matter.

OK - I ordered the Futuredial 1200 cable/installed Prolific drivers/set phone port to RS-232, and this is what I have been able to do so far:

1. Remove the "Verizon Wireless" so called banner (home area indicator)

2. Move pictures/wallpaper/ringtones to and from phone.

3. Setup and use Express Network and Quick2Net.

4. Load phonebook into Bitpim.

The above was done with BitPim .61. I think a few people may be getting confused and having problems in a couple of areas.

Bitpim was written for the 4400 not the 6000, and not all functions work. You can get phonebook data only (not calender/wallpaper/ringtones, using .....=Data=get phone data... and just putting a check in phonebook, nothing else. A check in anything else will cause the errors alot are experiencing.

To do 1. & 2., you need to go to =view= and put a check in =file system=, to enable the file system tab. From there you click on the + folder to recieve you phones file system. From here you are on your own...... read read read - don't you love hearing that?

I think this is correct also. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

People may be having problems because some of the following information being switched:

If you are using:

Futuredial 1200 cable, use only the Prolific drivers and set the phones port to RS-232.

If you are using:

Verizon/LG office kit cable, use only the LG drivers and set the phones port to USB.

From what I have read it seems a few of you may be using wrong drivers and/or port setting for the cable you have.

I have also been able to view some of the filesystem using Gagin, but only checked to see if it worked, didn't try anything yet.

So the bottom line is, to do everything at this point it seems we need two cables.

The Futuredial cable seems to do all except sync your info - contacts etc.... and the Verizon Office kit will take care of that.

Best thing is to have one cable and software/drivers on one PC and the other on another PC.

Hopefully 1XExpress will come through with one cable and software that will do it all, if it ever comes out.

After reading - reading - reading for hours/days this is where I got and I hope passing this on helps someone.

Good Luck,
Nethead

the 1xexpress cable is alomst out and we only have limited quanities left the cable is actually designed for the vx6000 so it should work better it costs $35.00

Posted by: cizco962

I've got the 9500 with the futuredial cable for the 9155. I've been able to upload pics and ringtones using Brewapploader w/ balpatch 9. I've tried the snapdialer to try to connect to EN ... didnt work. I tried using windows dialer (XP), .... didnt work. I wonder if anybody knows if I can even use the futuredial cable for this or if I need the one from verizon w/ the dialer???

Posted by: cizco962

I didnt notice it was an lg forum till after my post, but if anybody can help id appreciate it

Posted by: areed25

Actually, I've seen 7 cables in the forum:

3G
Factory Direct Cellular
Cellular Accessories
Future Dial
TangShop
Verizon OEM kit
and now the 1express.

Now correct if I'm wrong, but the software required to download ringtones, etc., and to move pics around does not come with most of these cables. Verizon kit does & Factory Direct Cellular. The rest require you to purchase software like 'snap synch' at $20-30.

Has anyone tried the Factory Direct Cable?

Posted by: shadowgerm

what about this one http://store.yahoo.com/cellularacce...gvx6000usb.html

seems like a good deal. I just need to transfer ringers and pics and sync my contacts

thanks

Which of the cables listed above are true USB cables and not serial cables?

Posted by: rapture

I got the Tangshop.com cable today. After some tweaking (actually a lot), Iwas able to get the BitPim, VZ mobile office, and the windows dialup all to work. For some reason, I had to change the port on my pohne to USB insdead of the popular way of using RS232C port. Anyhow, it's $18.95 + $4 sheeping. I thought it's a pretty good deal.

One cable I haven't seen mentioned yet is the modular system from Gomadic.

This system is cooool! You get a "blackbox" that you plug a cable for your phone in one end and a cable for your laptop/pda/whatever in the other end. It sounds pretty cumbersome, but it's actually still small enough to carry in the front pocket of loose fitting pair of jeans.

When you order, you just specify the phone model and model of pda or whatever you're trying to connect the phone to. For $10 you can add a standard 9-pin serial connector for your laptop. Sorry, they don't seem to have a usb version. The ultra cool thing is when you change phones or pda's you just send them back the old adapter for the device you no longer use and request one for the new device - for FREE!

Using this system I've been able to connect my vx6000 to my Palm M505 and my laptop.

Using the standard dialers in PalmOS and Windows XP, I've been able to connect each to the internet via Express Network (Verizon's High Speed Network), Verizon's Low Speed Network, and even had it dial my regular ISP. The speed doesn't seem to be hampered much by the fact that the connection is serial and not usb. Gomadic has very detailed instructions for every make and model of anything and what you can't find browsing their knowledge base, you can get answered quickly by emailing their tech support, even before you've made a purchase. My experience with their tech support is phenomenal!

As for backup/hacking/picture downloading, RPIWirless.com has a version of bitpim modified specifically for the VX6000. They do charge $5 for the download, but it seems worth it to me. I had a bit of trouble getting the download to work, but a couple of call to tech support was all it took. I can backup/modify phone book, calendar, ringtones (add/delete), and pictures (add/delete). I can double click on the picture right in bitpim to open it up in XP's standard picture viewer and copy it to another directory from there. Alternatively, you can copy pictures from the phone using the "filesystem" tab in bitpim. The communication with the phone is probably slower over serial than usb, but it's sure good enough for me!!!

No Outlook sync, but I do believe you can import/export a csv and use that to manually keep Outlook and the phone sync'ed.

Considering the fact that I stuck with Kyocera forever and a day almost exclusively because I didn't want to have to replace my cables, I'm hooked on this system! Now, if it would only keep my phone charged up while I'm on the internet, I'd be in heaven.:

Posted by: inothome

I just got the Kyocera USB Slider SE47 cable, it does the VX6000 and the VX4500 also, this is a USB to serial cable. My old LG VX6000 cable was straight USB and it only did the VX6000, not the Slider or the VX4500. All three phones use the prolific USB drivers and all work with BitPim using this cable.

Posted by: buduan

I bought the non charging cable from RPI and it works great. The fastest speeds I've seen on bandwidth tests are around 100kbps.

It came with all the software so I can sync the Outlook calendar with my phones calendar. My only beef with that is that phone doesn't allow you to put to much info on it. I can only put the name of the appt on my phone calendar, it dumps the address and other info I try to put on there because there isn't enough room.

I can also sync up the contacts which is nice.

I can also pull pictures off of it or put them in the phone from my laptop.

I can add ringtones.

Very happy with it so far, it cost me about $25 without shipping.

I think I am really confused now.

I just purchased the Verizon Mobile Office Kit for the VX6000.

I know it will sync Outlook stuff and it does not contain software for sending PIC's or Ringtones to the phone. BUT, can I load BitPM and be able to do this the the items I already have (cable and drivers)?

I have not installed the kit yet as I am also curious on the best drivers to use?

I am running XP Pro on my Desktop and Laptop

Thanks for the help!

Can someone please decipher this a bit. I bought the following cable on EBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEBWN%3AIT&rd=1

It is supposed to be a true USB cable. I have tried 5 different machines, with just about every piece of driver software I've seen mentioned here. I've used the LG USB drivers, the RPI drivers, th LGusbModem drivers, on and on. When I turn on the phone, after an installation and reboot, the system recognizes a USB device, but I cannot get anything to either see it as a USB device, or COM port. I've tried this on 3 WIN/XP Pro machine, a Win/98 machine, and a Win/ME machine. My cell phone's software level is: T60VZ06. Is it possible that a cable can be recognized as a USB device, but still not tie it into a driver, did Verizon change something in the software programming to block this? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Posted by: dre4402

do they have a serial cable

Posted by: jefflcruz

pwrusr,

I just bought the verizon kit as well and loaded everything onto my machine. It was a bit confusing since I didn't need all the moble stuff for it since it was a desktop.

I unloaded all the software and downloaded the futuredial drivers and BitPim and was able to download all my contacts, upload wallpapers and change ringtone.

I'd suggest using the futuredial drivers and BitPin instead of all the software that came with the mobile kit

Posted by: pwrusr

I finally installed the kit and drivers, first on my Laptop as I did weant all the drivers and wit works GREAT! The connection to the EN is real nice, downloads were clocked at 120kbps, not bad!

I then just loaded the drivers only on my Desktop and loaded BitPM 6.2 and all is working great, no issues!

I am now trying to verify to the extent BitPM7.6 works witht he VX6000?

Thanks for the input!

Forgive my newbiness...

I recently picked up the LG VX6000 phone, and have trolled the forums and the FAQ's somewhat. I don't really care about syncing to Outlook (i'm not THAT important), but i would like to upload and download pics/ringtones/wallpapers/etc.

It sounds like the $70.00 verizon package can't do that.

I've seen an ad for the Factory Direct Cellular cable/program, but it is cryptic-at-best what program this is. The link is here:
http://www.factorydirectcellular.co....htm#filesystem.

Could one of you here that knows about this identify the program it's using? Moreso, has anyone here gotten this from Factory Direct Cellular? My OS is Win XP Professional.

Aside from that, knowing that i just want to get pics/ringtones to and from, if this is not the best option, what would you all suggest?

Thanks

I just received the cable and cd-rom from Factory Direct, but for some reason my computer doesn't even read the disc, so I have no idea what to do now. Can anyone help me?

Posted by: Autarch

RPI Wireless charging USB cable works great, too. $25 from their website. So far I've used it to upload wallpapers and ringtones, and download camera pictures. Supposedly it also will enable fax/modem use.

Kaziwazi, if your computer doesn't automatically play the disc, can you see it in "My Computer" D: (or whatever your drive is called)? If so, try right clicking on it and select "Open" or "Explore" from the pop-up menu.

Posted by: Sing

Excuse me Autarch I have recently purchased the same charging usb cable from rpiwireless as well. I was just wondering if you can give me a list of software and drivers that you used for a successful upload of wallpaper and ringtones. Also were you able to get rid of the annoying "Verizon Wireless" banner too? Also is there a step by step procedure you can tell me. If there is already a posted pls direct me to it. I just got the lg vx 6000 and dont want to mess it up...I'm an idiot sometimes. All those for dummies....books you see I think I read them all. lol

Is it a true USB or a serial patch cable? i heard that setting them both up is different

just keep us newbies posted on this. I's love to put some really good ringtones on it--something liek, "hey @#$%%##! Pick up the damned phone!!!"

Posted by: Autarch

Sorry for the long delay in getting back to you; you've probably figured this out by now, but in case you haven't....

I used the drivers on the included CD from RPI wireless. I couldn't get the drivers recognized automatically, though. I had to open the folder manually, copy them to my hard drive, then force them to be used during the install procedure.

The only other software I used was the most recent Bitpim (0.7 test 7 at the time, if I recall; they're up to 0.7 test 11 now).

Bitpim

I haven't tried to remove the Verizon banner yet.

There are procedures posted (on HoFo, I think) for both removing the banner and for transferring files with the cable. Some of these procedures are in the sticky threads. Just search for "VX6000 data cable" or "VX6000 banner", etc.

All of this assumes you already have files in the correct formats to be uploaded to your phone. If not, you'll need to get some other software to do this. Just post exactly what formats you have.

Posted by: Autarch

Again, sorry for the long delay in replying.

I think the RPI Wireless cable is true USB, but I'm not completely certain about this. (I'm really a cell phone newbie, too.) The setup procedure might be a little different, but it wouldn't be by much. In either case, it works and is fast enough for what I need to do (even with USB 1.1).

Having the custom backgrounds and ringtones (and being able to change them at will, for free) is great, but the whole process of getting the cable to work was a huge

Posted by: ivan a rom

hey autarch, i bought the cable off of ebay and i dont think the driver i have is good, it's a pl-2303 driver installer, if you could send me the right one or even name the right one that would be great

oh and what are the devices that get installed

Posted by: HyToFry

I have a moble office kit from Verizon. I paid the $70 for it during the pix-messaging free promotion (at which time, using one of the networks (the higher speed one) was comepletely free, 24/7. too bad that ended.

I use bitpim with it. It works great.

I've never found any software made for the vx6000 which didn't work with the cable and the drivers I got from http://www.smithmicro.com/verizon

Edit:

I'm running Windows XP profession on an IBM T30 Laptop.
