Try using a program called BackupBuddy. You'll find a trial at www.bluenomad.com.
It's very easy to use and also includes some useful utilities.

it seems that this will only backup the palm itself what about getting data off the expansion card

You'll probably need to back up the expansion card to a PC/Mac with an SD card to USB reader.
I used my PC to copy all my SD card files over, then copied them to another SD card, so if I lose the phone with SD card in it, I'll be back up and running with the second card when I get a replacement phone.

Back up buddy (PC Version) backs up all data whether it's on the handheld or expansion card. You do not need a card reader. Message me and I'll let you have a copy so that you can try it yourself

I used to use SyncWizard but i sold my Palm m130 and i have Palm Vx now.
Its realy usefull and customizable. You can see whatever you have in your SD card and you can save whatever you want.

A cheap way is to get a free program like FileZ or FileProg (head on over to www.freewarepalm.com ). Then, just copy all the files on your handheld to a folder that you name Backup on the expansion card.
Of course, you have to do it manually, but you know that it works and you don't spend any money to get a backup program
