How do I upgrade the firmware of my phone?

I think this question belongs in this sub-forum. I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere. 
Can someone just briefly tell me how to upgrade the firmware of my Nokia phone? Is it even possible for the end user to do this, or does the phone have to go through a Nokia repair center?

Okay, reading around it looks like it's only possible at a cell phone store...
Sorry for my newbie questions but I think they should at least be addressed in one of the stickied posts.
