Lost sms's

I removed my MSD, formatted it, replaced and restored. All sms's (inbox, sent, etc) were gone - but I thought they were on my phone's internal memory? How did this happen?
Ditto: I bought my 64Mb, restored by 16Mb backup, and all perfect except no sms's again.
Have I screwed up somewhere? No-one else seems to be stressing about this. My phone is 100% stable in all other respects.
