Aluminum Full Housing for the 8290

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Before anybody says anything I would like to say NO... I don't want this so I can poseur my 8290 as a 8890. I want this, because I am looking for a heavy duty face plate with a cover and pretty much everthing else out there with a slide is crap.

With that said dose anybody have experience with these aluminum full housings? http://www.cellphoneshop.net/ligstonalful.html

I emailed the place and they said you don't have to make any modifcation. Just swap the 8290 internals into this phone.

Anybody know if these full housings are quality? If the swap is that simple?

Thanks.

I don't know how it works (never seen a conversion kit in person), but have you had experience with the internals of a phone before? Because I believe you'll have to do some unscrewing of the board from the housing, and have some knowledge of how everything's pieced together, etc. If not, It probably wouldn't be a good idea for you to install it yourself. And I don't know if this is true or not, but guys around here have said that the conversion case can possibly shortcircuit your board, and all in all the quality of the kit is pretty poor.

most of those aluminum housings are cheap pieces of crap though... I wouldn't waste my time.

Yep. From my experience with an aluminum housing it is not worth it. It's sheet metal glued (often not very well) onto plastic.

Sometimes after you put it together, the slide is not flush with the rest of the faceplate, so it doesn't look even. This is purely a quality control issue as they're made cheap but sold at a high price for profit.

It also makes the 8290 thicker (thicker than the real 8890 also), and I hate it that way. And if you have the stock green lights for the 8290, it makes your faux-8890 really ugly.

I wouldn't waste the time I did with it.

To answer the conversion question - no, there is no heavy duty conversion that goes on with taking a OEM 8290 to the metal slide.

The only problem that you will run into is the volume buttons - the buttons often get stuck when you take the knob pieces form an 8290 (grey plastic) and use the chromed plastic ones (must use for most of the conversion kits).

Oh, and sometimes the battery connectors are a pain. Overall though, it will make your phone heavier and thicker. I got a good conversion kit, but I eventually (8 hours later) bought an 8890 instead.

i bought that exact same one from cell phone shop.net like you want, usually they have great products but their aluminum full housings are CRAP. They fall apart within days. I had to return it twice, they finally just gave me a refund. Buy one off ebay. They are better.

Or get one from www.gsmsquare.com - or buy mine for 20$ that I only used for about 6 hours that I got from GSMSquare. I highly recommend that one.
