My thoughts on UIQ and Series 60

Okay, I am working extra hours and I want to vent some frustration. So I will start with my smartphone thoughts, I have used both the P800 and the 3600.
Here are my thoughts when comparing the two:

-the circular keypad is alright for texting with two hands, but I'd rather use stylus input if I am gonna use 2 hands

-I love that both of them have really nice phonebooks, that is the biggest plus to me over a regular phone...well plus browsers and IM clients

-They both have different Bluetooth behavior. 3600's range and ability to interact with other machines seems better. I like that the handsfree profile can be actived during an active call (which the headset profile cannot) but I dislike that the handsfree profile disables the phone's ring (which the headset profile does not). I couldn't get the P800 to pair with my T|T reliably.

-Opera for UIQ and Doris Browser for Series 60 are both cool, but Opera (for UIQ because Opera for Series 60 blows) gives you better screen space and a better browsing experience

-No T9 in P800 vs. T9 and the circular keypad are are tough tossup. Not real happy either way

-I LOVE P800's Jotter app, especially that you can copy and paste to other apps

-I miss the one touch voice recorder that was present in Earlier Ericsson models

-I really like the hard buttoms of the T|T and the A920 as well as the scroll wheel of the P800 and one touch voice recorder of the early Ericsson models...all three in one phone would rock

-I LOVE Psiloc's screen saver for Series 60 and I can only hope that the equivalent app for UIQ improves from its current horrendous state because I really do miss the T68's floating clock and SplashClock

-P800 has really got to something about multiple, customizable profiles...the current state is just pathetic

-I really miss Chapura's 3rd party sync products with Outlook for Palm OS. Symbian's PIM sync is not the top of the market for me, maybe Agendus will do something for us

-I like that both user interfaces support IM jabber clients, especially TipicME

-Both 3600 and P800 are slow compared to Palm T|T, I hope future versions are faster with both the processor, and, more importantly, the surrounding architecture

-both have great email clients, I just wish that we could sync with Outlook Express

-my experience with GPRS is that it is as slow as dial-up. I really hope that EDGE catches on and that future models support EDGE.

-I hope that in the near future, AvantGo can be supported by UIQ because both Palm and Series 60 are both able to enjoy its benefits for commuters who like to keep abreast of information on the go

-I also hope that QuickOffice or Documents to Go comes to UIQ, since Series 60 is currently supported by QuickOffice. Same goes for HandyShopper

-camera is the least important option to me, at least while they are less than 3 megapix, which is low resolution IMHO

-I seriously doubt whether ePocrates will come to Symbian of any flavor for some time yet

-I really like the Palm T|T's spring loaded stylus

In sum, I would be using the P800 if it supported GSM 850. I would be happy to have the P800 for PIM and communication tool, i.e. SMS, email, browser, IM and keep the T|T for professional applications: Docs to Go, iSilo, ePocrates, and AvantGo

from my Brighthand signature:
Gimme a smartphone that blends Palm OS 5 and Symbian. Start with Palm OS 5 as well as at least 64 MB of RAM and expansion slot. Give it a form factor like the LG KH5000 or Samsung SGH-D700. Its gotta support R-UIM and be tri-mode (Wi-Fi for voice over IP, GSM/EDGE, and CDMA2000) and at least dual band (850,1900). Toss in Bluetooth 1.2, speakerphone, 262K color 320x320 TFT screen, and high-resolution camera for both still and video. I really like the spring loaded stylus that the T|T has onboard.

From Symbian: Profiles (can be from 3rd party apps like Series 60), including radio off, are a must. I do love UIQ's Jotter app (which is not the same as Jot/Graffiti 2, as well as the native removable media support and support for Opera browser.

I'd pay 2000USD for a custom one 8-)

I liked the P900 simply because the phone is so versatile! People with P900 can install ready made softwares for that perticular phone unlike me. I have an A920 and just can't find the blue key after installing Tracker!
However, the screen on A920 is clearer than the P900 and also heavier. Never mind, I will not be screeming as I have the upgraded A920 to A925.

what are the big differences in a920 and 925?

Nothing much...Here are the changes that I have gathered:

A925
(1) New design cover
(2) Supports Bluetooth and Infra Red
(3) 10MB internal memory instead of 8MB on A920
(4) Brighter back lights

i've had the 3650 and 6600, and the p800 and p900

i LOVE series 60 (i actually think it's more userfriendly than uiq), but overall i prefer uiq (plus tracker or handy day)
