TOTAL mobile phone newbie...

ok...someone sent me a cetc/mitac mio 8380...but i don't know what to do in order for it to work in the states.

when i turn in on i get some sort of SIM card error...it says i have to get it serviced. i can't do ANYTHING with the phone...can't navigate menues...just sits on that error message.

is it possible to get it to work in the US? how? and what providers will support it? will it work with verizon?

it's a nifty phone so i'd love to get it to work...otherwise i'll just have to give it away to a friend in china...

thanks for any help you can provide me!!!!!

I know there are many people successfully using the Mitac 8380 in the states because they have written in.

Maybe the SIM type is incompatible. Have you tried any other SIMS ?

i had no idea what a SIM was until i started browsing this message board this morning...total cell phone newbie!

so i have no idea where these SIMS are...where on the mio8380 is this thing?

and where can i get an existing sim that works in the states? i currently have a LG VX6000 and a Motorola T720...my provider is Verizon. Do either of my phones have a SIM? Will it mess anything up to take a SIM from one phone and put it in anothe phone!

Thanks!

If you open up either of your other phones you will see a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) which you can transfer to the Mio 8380. The SIM is a small rectangular card which contains all the subsriber related information like IMSI, MSISDN (mobile number), etc.

The is no problems with transfering this SIM to ANY device you wish so just go ahead and install it. The MIO should then boot up and access the network.

i read in another forum that i cannot use the mio 8380 with verizon...they said verizon is a CDMA network...and the mio 8380 will only work on a GSM network...

from what i've read, i need to get the phone "unlocked" and i need s SIM from a GSM provider to get this thing to work in the states...

can someone help me?

in the mean time, i'll try to find answers myself...off to google i go...

Your friend is correct that the Mio will only work on a GSM network. In the US that is ATT (most parts of country), TMobile, Cingular, and some regional carriers. Verizon is indeede on CDMA and will not work with the Mio under any circumstances.

However, you may not need your Mio unlocked, unless whoever you bought it from got it from a foreign cell phone carrier. If it was bought from a retailer without service, it should already be unlocked in which case you just need to take your phone to TMobile, or one of the others and buy a SIM card. With the SIM card installed and you SIM account activated with a carrier, you're in business.

Of course, you now have a Verizon account to cancel and before Nov 24th, you can't take your phone number with you either.

Just get a activated SIM card from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Cingular, then plug SIM card into the your 8380 (remove battery then you'll see a slot for SIM card), then you are set to go.
