What is required for unlocking siemens phones? (s56, c56 and the like)

Is it software based using software that's available on the net? Is it simply a unlock code like nokia dct4 phones?
I'm just curious, I don't need to unlock one (I don't even have a siemens phone), I just saw a data cable for it in the store and it got me wondering.
