Beginner info, tips, links, all you wanted to know about the T610/T616

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: brain_scientist

Of late, it seems that the search button is not working too well, or is not being used too well. I thought that a post like this might help a lot of people who are looking in for some basic info. It might answer questions asked about once every six hours...either by total noobs, or by people like me who have been lured to SE by the T616, and are not used to the SE 'way'. This information took me a long time to get to, and I thought that while I was heavily doped (recovering from a neurological pain condition) that this would be a good use of my somewhat limited mental faculties

If other folks can add more to it, because I'm sure there is a lot to add (like bluetooth PC communication, for example, which I don't use) we might persuade the moderator to 'sticky' this...

Difference between T610 and T616
T616 is the North-American specific version of the T610. The T610 works on 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz bands, of which only the 1900MHz band is used in the US. On the other hand, the T616 uses the 850, 1800 and 1900 MHz bands. Thus the usability of the T616 outside North america is limited to places that utilize the 1800 MHz band.

What is 'firmware', and where do I find out what firmware my phone uses?
Firmware is the software that allows your phone to function, acting as an interpreter between you and your phone's hardware. It is very much like a computer's operating system. It is periodically updated, as flaws are fixed or as functions are upgraded.

You can check your phone's firmware by the following key sequence(where < means push the joystick to the left; > to the right, and * means press the * key):

>*<<*<*

This gets you to the 'Service Menu'. Pick SW information to see your phone's firmware. My T616's firmware, for example, is R1A054.

Why does my phones signal strength meter fluctuate wildly?
That is what SE phone signal strength meters do. Later firmware upgrades to the T610 and T616 usually fix that problem

Why does my T610/6 show only one/two bars where my Nokia/Siemens/Motorola shows 3 or 4?
SE phones usually show a smaller number of bars than other brands. That does not necessarily indicate a poorer performance of the phone. This is just a representation of the 'strength' of the signal, kind of like a gas-gauge in a car; if it the needle has moved 4/5ths of the way, doesn't mean that you have only 4/5ths of a full tank left.

The T616 will perform very well when the bar shows 1 bar; by contrast in other phones that I have had, having one bar meant I was in deep doo-doo. SE proponents will say that other phone brands artificially inflate their signal strength meters. While the T616 does not have the best reception, it is at least equal in my personal experience to Nokia 6800 and Nokia 6200. I live in a poor signal strength area, and have 3 T616's.

What is a locked or unlocked phone? How do I know whether my phone is locked or not?
A locked phone is usually 'locked' to a single wireless provider. GSM phones use 'SIM' cards which hold your account info, and a locked phone will accept SIM cards only from one carrier.

Phones can either be purchased 'unlocked' from sellers or straight from the manufacturer, you can unlock them by entering an unlock code (from some carriers, for example), or pay people to have them unlocked. (You can do it yourself, too, but it is not that easy).

You can check the lock status of your phone by accessing the 'Service Menu' as above, and picking the SIMlock submenu. If the symbol next to 'Network' is locked, then your phone is locked. The number next to the lock represents the number of tries available to you to punch in an unlock code.

Where do I find the date of manufacture of my phone?
Remove the battery. Under that, you will find the SE label. On the bottom right of that label, you will find a number like '03W32', which means year(03) and week(W32) of manufacture.

What software do I need to transfer files to my pc, or to synchronize/backup my phone to my pc?
Files can be transferred using cable (USB or RS232); Infrared port ; Bluetooth connector. You will need the first two of the things listed below; the rest are optional
1. Mobile phone monitor (www.sonyericsson.com)
2. XTNDconnect (comes with phone; lets you sync your phone to Outlook, and lets you use your phone as a data modem for your PC or PDA)
3. Float's mobile agent (edit contacts, send SMS, monitor phone, originate calls https://sourceforge.net/projects/fma/)
4. SendFile (transfer files to phone): http://www.christersson.org/software.php
5. PhoneBackup (backup contacts, settings, calendar, SMS): http://www.christersson.org/software.php
6. PC control (control PC from phone): http://www.christersson.org/software.php

How do I set up speed dial
Transfer contacts to SIM. Arrange the positions on the SIM in the order you want. From standby, punch in the location of the contact you want (for example, put 'J. Doe' in location 2. Then press 2, and press 'Call')

How do I insert a pause in my dialing sequence, for example, to add your PIN code when you call your voicemail
Press and hold the '7' key at the place you want to insert the pause.

What is Video Caller ID
If you associate a picture with a contact, and that contact calls, the picture will show up on the display. Similarly, if you add a voice tag to your contact, the voice tag will be played out when the contact calls.

How do I know when my phone is done charging?
If you are charging with the phone off, the little light in the joystick will go off. If the phone is on, the battery status bar will stop moving when the phone is fully charged.

What is bluetooth
Bluetooth (BT) is a short-wave standard for radio communication. It operates in the 2.4 GHz band, is relatively noise-free, and works in a range of about 10 m (33 feet). The T616 can talk to PC's or other phones which 'have' BT. You can use a 'bluetooth' headset to talk while your phone is 10 m away (in your glovebox, backpack, purse, or home window (the only place in my home where I get good reception)). You can also use your BT phone to send messages to unsuspecting suckers who have their BT turned on in their phone/PDA/PC...however, you cannot browse their folders or access data unless they specifically allow you to do so...using BT headsets and voice-dialing, voice-commands and voice caller ID, I can pretty much go the whole day without actually looking at my phone or touching it (which is actually a pity, considering that this is, in my opinion, the best looking phone I have seen. And yes, I do not like the flashy multi-hued monstrosities that rule the day )

Other tips
-when the display is dark, you can get just the clock to illuminate by pressing one of the volume control keys on the left side of the phone
-the left joystick motion (from standby) leads to the first command located in the 'My shortcuts' list, and can be customized
-from standby, you can go directly to the contact list by pressing a key corresponding to the first letter in the name of your contact, and keeping it pressed (i.e., pressing 5 will open the contact list at 'J')
-you can get the phone to switch profiles automatically (e.g. change to meeting profile) if that meeting is scheduled in your calendar: just change the 'Profile Switch' to Auto in your calendar's 'options' submenu
-from most places/programs, pressing the 'Back' key and keeping it pressed will take you back to standby.
-in camera mode, you can (1) toggle the picture size by pressing 1, (2) toggle 'night' mode by pressing 2, (3) change change brightness ('exposure') by moving the joystick up or down, (3)cycle between effect by pressing 3, (4) toggle between self-timer off/on by pressing 4, (5) adjust exposure/brightness by moving the joystick up/down, (6) adjust color saturation by moving the joystick left/right
-you can add text labels to your pictures or add lines or simple geometric shapes to the smaller sized pictures by going into 'edit' mode while looking at pics in your 'My Pictures' folder
-you can access your phone number and other information by pressing the volume keys on the side of the phone while phone is in standby
-if you need to refer to something frequently (shopping list?), you can write up a note, and 'post' it. This will essentially make it your background in standby mode, and you can see it from standby and during calls etc.
-no, there is no point to the 'colorbug' game (I think) other than showing you how clustering programs work
-you can attatch a carrying strap to the phone by opening the battery compartment, and hanging the strap through the hole in the bottom shaped like a ' [ ' turned sideways.

a lot of this can apply to just E/// / SE handsets in general

but with this, a lot of ppl can STOP asking repetitive questions

Just found this today trying to fix something that bugged be, and thought it might be nice since it never really occurred to me that there would be a decent solution:

How to make the recent calls list sort by date, not type etc.

Sasha_NY
When you pick a 10-digit number from the CALLS listing, go to MORE and pick the EDIT BEFORE CALL option. Then erase the whole number from the screen using a "c" key and enter just one simbol instead - a plus sign (+). Then press OK and the phone will try to dial a "+". I didn't even wait for it to fail, just cancelled the call and - voila - my calls are now listed in the chronological order, descending, regardless of call-type.

Hope you find this helpful, maybe add it to the guide.

Chris

hell yeah!, maybe this will stop the "what's the diff between t610 and t616 threads"

Posted by: suzie

Hello and thank you for the "how to" brain_scientist.

Is there a way to dump the phone book to the SIM with one click or does one have to save each contact individually to the SIM?

Thanks,
Suzie

Posted by: brain_scientist

Suzie, Yes. As in pretty much everything fancy in this phone, check in the 'advanced' or 'options' submenus.

phonebook>advanced>copy to SIM.

You're welcome (Response to any thanks, in advance, so that this thread doesn't become un-necessarily long)

Here's a link on what I went through to change my cracked LCD screen. People should know that SE does NOT repair out of warranty cellular phones so you either do it yourself or get a third party to do it. Replacement screen cost only about $40 off eBay.

EXCELLENT!!!!!what a resource!, i will be adding this to the "because" thread under: SE ESSENTIALS simply because it is

*click on my sig for the updated version of "because", i will be PM-ming the mods to make changes in the HoFo version

On an off note, please notice that in the US old Voicestream SIM cards do not work with the t616. I found this cute quirk out when I upgraded from my t68ie. I even went as far as sending the phone to SE service!!! SE actually replaced the actual phone but came back with the same results when I put in my old Vstream SIM. So being calm, I paid a visit to my local T-mobile dealer and asked them to "test" out the phone with one of their SIM cards. And wouldnt you know it, the new t-mob card worked but NOT my vstream one!

I guess I'll chalk this up to one of those life experiences people talk about?

It might be a good idea to add the Macintosh info to this. Apple has designed their built in apps to work specifically with this phone. They reall seem to like SE phones.

Let me know if you want me to write a bit about 610/616s and Macs.

Posted by: tired_nhappy

Please do! Sounds very helpful!

@ perry, the thread was created to help out users of the t610, help enlighten some members who may be too shy to post questions on MAC and SE. post away

iSync works great for the basics, but here are some indispensible apps that will make your life easier:

http://www.macmedia.sk/pa.htm
http://homepage.mac.com/jonassallin...ient/index.html
http://homepage.mac.com/jonassallin...are/MobileSync/

In particular, Phone Agent (the first link) is an amazing little application. The SMS and MMS capabilties are nice, but I like having that extra bit of control over my phonebook.

This app would be great for iBook/PowerBook owners who like to create SMS/MMS on their computer and send through the phone.

Can you fix the last 2 links? They have "..." in them as a result of truncation.

I wanna know if you can turn off the sound the camera makes when you take a picture (that camera snapshot noise). I have figured out that it doesn't make the sound when the phone is set to silent mode, but I want to know if you can disable it some other way. I've tried messing around with the key tones, I turned them off, but the camera noise still sounds withi them off. I guess the only way to avoid that is putting it into silent mode?

If anyone has any info on this, feel free to post..

OK,

So I get how to program pauses into a string of numbers, but the problem here is that the pauses fire faster than most Audix/voicemail/banking/etc systems offer up options/prompts.

With my other phones, the option was there to enter the numbers with your PIN/extensions/selection/etc and alllow you to hit send _when the prompt asked for them_ rather than just pausing briefly and entering them willy-nilly, thereby confusing whatever system.

Two questions - is there a way to accomplish the latter - pre-programming the numbers and deploying them at your leisure rather than the T616's pre-programmed intervals, Failing that, is there a way to alter the intervals between the pauses?

Thx,

SCd

Posted by: brain_scientist

@sirchandestroy: I haven't been able to find out or figure out how to insert a 'wait for command' code. I would love to know how. However, you can insert multiple pauses inyour dialing sequence. Each 'p' equals about 3 seconds...

@augustborn: thanks for the compliments; as you can see, I already have multiple links to your compendium of links.

@blakintellikt: to cut paste etc, you can only do that only in the contact edit menu. But you do that by pressing the * key along with 1, 2, or 3. I think that the combinations are cut, copy and paste, in that order. But these will not work outside the contact edit menu.

Posted by: swamp7

I see the threads about holding the 7 down for "p", but how do I edit & save the voicemail # at all? I can't seem to find this option on the phone.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

I don't see why this is hard. Use some logic. Where do you expect it to be? It is exactly where I would put it.

messages>options>voicemail number.

Posted by: swamp7

got it, thanks. My logic must be different than yours: I was looking under the phonebook/contacts area.

Posted by: dhuston99

I hope I am not asking a question someone else asked already, but here it goes. I have tried using the lup/down joystick to control brightness with the camera but I see no difference. Do you see the difference on the screen or just once the picture is taken? Could this be a function that is locked by my provider or could it have something to do with my firmware? My provider is T-Mobile and my firmware is R1S001. (I think) Also the right/left doesnt work for the color stauration either. On another note I think I should be able to download games but TMobile tells me I cant. Is that because they dont support them and the phone is locked? Any help with these questions would be great!

Thanks

Just wondering, how do you guys prevent your screen from being damage or scratched? If I do get a phone like this, I would think I place it in my jacket pocket and there could be a chance that my keys will end up scratching it.

Posted by: kpjimmy

I have my t616 for a couple of months now. After a drop on gravel(damaged aftermarket oem faceplate), phone still going on strong and no scratches on my screen yet! Well I do not really just pop the phone in my pocket with keys, thats to me is asking for a scratch .

I have heard people putting screen protectors on the screen but i think that takes away from the color of the screen, and in the daylight, its hard enough to see! But I love the phone and if there happens to be a scratch i can deal with it, its a phone, and the t616 has already been replaced . But if its something i cannot deal with, i'll just buy a new faceplate.

Hope that helps!

This works, I use it myself. Most ringers are defaulted to 20 seconds, not enough time if you can't find your phone and you miss the call. This will let you increase your ringtime to 30 seconds (the highest, six rings). Just type the code below down just like you're making a phone call.

*61*(your service center number)**30# [press Send]-you should see a message on your screen after it's done

Your service center number is your voice mail number which is by default in your phonebook. If it is not then you can press the following code and it'll tell you what your number is.

*#67# [press Send]-write down your number, area code and all

Enjoy!!

When the phone goes in screensaver mode and if I missed a call, is there a way to get an indication of that?

Currently, I have to unlock the phone to get that....

MT

Posted by: tired_nhappy

Thanks! Because of that gradual increase in sound for the ringtone, a lot of times I don't hear it until I have like 5-10 seconds left in that 20 second timeframe. I need that 30 seconds!

This only works when there is a good amount of light around. If you are trying to do it in a dark room, point it at a light and then change the settings; they will hold as you swing to a darker part of the room...however, if the brightness/saturation does not work in sunlight or other bright light, then you might have a software issue. Unlikely that the operator is blocking this function out.

I dont have wap capibilites on my cell so i cant download the ringtones from it. does anyone have a site so i can download to the computer than through IR? thanks..

basically these instructions is how to setup a email gateway so that you can take advantage of the email addresses stored in your phonebook.

success of this method depends on whether or not you can send sms to the gateway and if your phone can recv emails.

and these instructions are for a T610 but but will work similiarly with a t39 - t68 and other related models.

1. go to messenging > text > options > e-mail gateways

and setup a new gateway using this number:
+447815088091

there might be other gateways to use such as your own providers but some people might want to use a 3rd party one.

2. use ur pc or something and email a dummy/blank email to your phone. once you recv that email sms, save the sms into your "sim archive".

now you have an "email" saved in there. when you view the msg, you should be able to see the "From" address.

Now when you want to write an email to someone:

1. go back into your Sim Archive and open your saved email

2. move the cursor to the "From" email address and click on it. the next screen will be the "write new" message screen. so write your new msg. and press "continue"

3. this screen is where you can enter your own email address or you can clear what's in the box and go "lookup" and choose from your phonebook. then press ok, after you have entered or chosen you recipient.

4. in this screen, you can add more recipients or send the msg.

so give it a try. it works for me. but I remember it doesn't work for rogers (at least 1 year ago it didn't)

if you have fido pro, I suggest you use this method since its sms and fido won't know you are sending out an email so you can send as many sms-emails as you like.

also note that your message cannot be longer than 160-your email address. so approx 140 for the body.

enjoy!

you can't increase the ringtime?

using the methods mentioned on the website?

usually rogers is notorious for little things like this.

Posted by: nicxios

Tried to increase the ringtime but didn't work for me. Seems like AT&T won't allow it!!!

Posted by: Bindiesel

i have an unlocked T610 from T-mobile and i am om Rogers as well ... the ring time increase didnt work for me as well as i get a command error message !!!

Posted by: edwinx

most likely rogers disabled those commands

Worked for me....Cingular RULES!!

Posted by: jvang125

Not sure if someone posted this already but i didnt see anything on it so here goes.

Some of the included themes, ringtones, and wallpaper can be deleted which contributes to the total 2MB of memory. By deleting some of the ones you dont want, you can gain back the space for things you do want. there are a few that cannot be deleted but the majority are. after i deleted most of the unwanted stuff, my memory status reported about 1800KB of free space.

One usuability question I have is in regard to composing messages. Lately I have been using a lot more SMS, so this has become more of an annoyance than before. After typing a new message, your are required to enter through way more menus than it seems neccessary. I have nothing different on my SIM, and can't see a reason to see a called, but un-listed phonebook number to send messages to. (I'm referring to what comes after composing a new message- the whole process of selecting a recipient)

I came from an S105 that paired with its faster menus and much shorter tree of events to accomplish something, seems many times more convienient in this sense. Albeit the T616 has bluetooth which has been an SMS lifesaver for me, once I leave the computer area, I'm stuck trudging through the menus again. So in short what type of things have people found or know about to improve the fluuidity of the T610. Not just in relation to what I have asked, but also in general. Thanks for reading this whole deal..

Chris

Ps - Just thought of another thing. How can I save SMS to SIM card? I can view the space for them on the SIM card, but it doesn't appear to be a supported function..

Posted by: augustborn99

cutting down menus after composing sms

1. create new group with one person on group (a frequent SMS recepient)

eg. "bob" (group)

2. CREATE SMS-->LOOKUP-->GROUPS-->BOB-->SEND

WHEN I TRY TO TAKE A PIC ON MY T616 WHY IS THERE A LINE ACROSS THE SCREEN? WHEN I TRY TO TAKE SMALL PICSTURES

Posted by: P900 Guru

Does anyone know where i can get this program or a program that does the same thing? Basically this program lets you search and send people mms's to thier phones via bluetooth in 3 stages:

Stage one: you activate bluetooth on your own phone

Stage two: you search for people within a 10m radius and it will bring up a list of all the people within that area on your phone

finally....

Stage 3: you select a phone from the list and send them a message for free and the good thing about it is it doesnt give the user you sent the message to your number or id and you can have alot of fun with it like..........

Senario... your in a resturant, lets take TGI'S in london for instants you activate your blue tooth and search for other users in your area and on your list comes up :T610,6600,and p800. You then select the phone you want to send it to or select all if you want to send it to everyone on the list and send them something like "That meal your eating looks good!!!!!....." and then look around in the resturant and see who's looking around wondering what the hells going on!!!!

only problem is i cant find this program any where on the net yet i seen it in action and its wicked, the person whos phone it was on called it "ping raider" but i cant find it.Any one heard of it or use a program similar on there bluetooth phone or have any ideas where i can get it from?

Plz let me know

also, i just bought BT for my computer and have the image editing softwear on my computer, BT is on both on the computer and phone. it detects my phone but doesnt detect it on the program...what am i doing wrong here? i have the dlink BT.

last Q, i went to the SimLock info, and i see that everything is unlock, but tmobile told me that the "data" proportion of my phone is still lock, so thats why i couldnt go to some of the sites! just wonder if theres any truth to it and how might i fix the problem!

Actually, the 850mhz is also used in the USA. You can see which providers use it by going to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml

Sorry for the double-quote of the same thing, but I got to thinking about it. So you're saying the T610 uses the 900, 1800, & 1900 MHz bands, and then say that the T610 uses the 850, 1800, & 1900 MHz bands. Then you go on to say:

"Thus the usability of the T616 outside North america is limited to places that utilize the 1800 MHz band."

So, even though the T616 supports the 1900 MHz band you can't use it or something? Or maybe no other country uses the 1900 MHz band? (BTW, many do.)

Posted by: synistyr

I wouldn't say 'many'. I think maybe Chile and Aruba.. and I don't know of any others.

The majority (99%?) will use 900 or 1800 outside North America.

That's my point, though - the T616 is still useable outside the USA as long as they use the 1800MHz or 1900MHz bandwidth. The OP implies that the T616 will "only" work outside the USA on the 1800MHz band.

The T616 is supported in 95% of the World, as I'd say 5% (?) uses the 900MHz exclusively.

"You can check your phone's firmware by the following key sequence(where < means push the joystick to the left; > to the right, and * means press the * key):"

>*<<*<*

I have tried this sequence on my T610 and nothing happens.

R*LL*L* = >*<<*<*

What do you think

Help please

Posted by: hfelsh

Then you're doing it wrong. Hold the last * a sec or two, but it does work. I've done it on my own T616 (when I unlocked it) and 2 of my co-worker's T610's (when I unlocked theirs.)

Posted by: acer33

thanks hfelsh

It says R1S001 , that doesn't look like the latest T-mobile ver: R6B003.

Should I get it updated?

Posted by: hfelsh

Actually, the absolute latest is R6B004. I have it locally and have updated a few people to it.

The latest you'll find on the site like globalmob.com and such is R4C003. Yes, an upgrade is useful.

Posted by: SpyderCKE

Go to service Info, then SW Information after that.. I'll bet you'll know what I'm talking about, it took me a bit to realize that key-sequence isn't for the FW version, but the service menu itself.

Posted by: plumers

Hey,
Mine (T610) got R3C002 and it's already unlocked freshly from factory. Which firmware is the latest and the best and where can I get it. Am I gonna lose everything that saved in my phone (Pic, Rings, Datas) when I upgrading it or not...

I was wondering how can I download all of my pic on my T610 to PCs, which software that can take out all of my datas in my T610?

Also is it possible to get bigger memory because I need more memory to save most of my data and picture?

Thanks anyway

Is it possible to send an email or SMS to the T616, say from Microsoft Outlook, that contains an appointment that is added directly to the phone's calendar? I would think that sending a vcal format message would cause the phone to interpret the messsage as a calendar entry, but that doesn't seem to work.

Ideas?

Posted by: SpyderCKE

If you have access to an Infrared port or bluetooth adapter you can send it that way. I will send appointments from my iPaq via infrared, works like a charm. Otherwise, you may have to look into a solution involving a website where you upload your data, then access it from a Java app on the phone. I don't know of any off hand, though.

Yep! Thats how I initially did it when I first got the phone. I don't sync with outlook becuase I got really annoyed with the phone going off 15 minutes before all my classes, and my numbers don't change that often. I basically just slect the contacts on the iPaq, do the click and hold that brings up the menu, and select send/beam/whatever the option is. This is all it takes for iR, bluetooth may take some pairing up first, I'm not sure since mine doesn't have that. Just play around with it, you'll be surprised how easy and fast it is

www.myt610.net is pretty much the best one.
tons of ringtones, themes, wallpaper, screensavers.
you can download them to your pc and send to phone, or browse the wap site and download it straight to your phone.

It's a completely different type of phone, it depends what you want from it.
3650 is a smart phone with more possibilties, but a lot bigger and ugly as hell.

I just got my T616 (Fido) two days ago. I must say I like it alot. However I have a few questions.

First off I have the R1B027 firmware.

I have a few problems, when I tried to put a .gif file on here as a background, one of two things occur, the gif has it's 7 frames and then it stops, or, the gif is unplayable (the Matrix one on this forum). I am at a loss as to why.

Is the screen saver the time that keeps moving around? I set up a picture as a screensaver and turned it on, but it doeesn't turn on.

Third thing, whenever I receive a message from Fido, it comes up as someon else in my address book (on the phone it says from 18) but in address book on my mac, it shows up as a different contact.

Finally, I would like to learn how to unlock a phone without using the service provider's code. Any recommendations as to where I could garner such information?

Thanks

-ST

Bloood:

You cannot change the service tag (the "T-Mobile" at the top). It is put there through the network, and lets you know when you are on the T-Mobile network or not....

does anyone unlock t616 them self, can u explain the procedure

Posted by: goldrake

Here's a question. I had a T316 and the ringers were a combination of Polyphonic and Monophonic ringtones. I really liked the monophonic ringtones like "mixed" or "high pitch". They are loud and you can hear them in almost any environment. Where do I find those? I tried some of the sites mentioned at the top of this thread but they only have polyphonic songs.
Thanks.

There are a couple of ways to do what you are trying to do with your Mac.

iSync worked perfectly for me.

Try this --
Select all the addresses you want -- as a group -- and export them as a vcard.

Use Bluetooth File exchange to send them to the phone.

To do this, you must be paired and Bluetooth must be active.

You drag and drop the vcard on BFE, it will bring up a list of paired devices, you pick your phone, and hit send. The phone will ask you whether it should accept the vcards.

Hope this helps. The Mac and t616 were made for each other. The interface is so good that I sent my brand new Motorola v600 back to ATT because it couldn’t match the ease with which the Mac interacted with the t616.

prairiefire,

I had not considered manually transferring the contacts a vcard file. I did so by dragging and dropping the entire file that I have "Cell Phone Numbers" as a separate file to avoid cluttering things up unnecessarily in the phone. When I dropped that file on Bluetooth File Transfer as you suggested (after deleting the files in the phone) I was asked if I wanted to add all to phone book and thereafter the file was imported. I got the same result as before though. Phone numbers made the trip, but email addresses did not. Just what label are you using for the email address? I have used "email" as a custom item, "other", "work", "Fax" and perhaps something else, but have not gotten the email address to appear in any of these attempts. In Phone Book>Options>Contact Info I have checked Home, Work, Mobile, Fax and Other.

Thanks

I just went back and checked my settings -- had never really looked because it worked so well.

Here’s my exact workflow. I exported from my Palm Desktop as a vcard. Imported the vcard into the address book as a vcard, and then ran isync.

I never looked at the categories -- but did just now so I could answer you.

In the address book, the email addresses are listed under a “work” heading. But, they import as email.

I have no idea how or why.

I’ve also been able to just drag Palm contacts to BFE and it works.

If you are having this much trouble, it may be worth it to buy Phone Agent. I got it -- but it’s a lot of program and I can’t figure out how to use ¾ of it. I do like the way it lets you straighten thing out on the Sim as well as in the phone book.

The size seems to be only limited by the free space you have, any midi file will work.

You can just send them from windows explorer, right click->Send To->InfraRed

You can download the sofware fomr the Sony Ericsson website, just look for the phone then click downloads.

I've searched using words like start up, welcome, change text in the Sony Ericsson forums and found zilch...

Thanks!

Posted by: sidneylopsides

Heh, i was sure you could do that but I can't see it, you can change the startup screen picture though.
Same on the K700.

edit: you can change it on the P8/9xx phones thats what I was doing it on!

Posted by: jayd4wg

you can change the startup text, but you need a Terminator dongle, the latest firmware update and a hex editor. BTW, if you ball up the update and install it in the phone, your phone could be turned into a very pretty paperweight.

go over to myt610.lasyk.net for more info on doing this.

I just got my t610 and I have a question. I loaded a MIDI file on to it that I want to use as my alert for a new message. I went to the advanced options to set it and the phone would only let me use the default message alert tones for a new message.

I can use any tone I want for a ring, or for an alarm, but not for a message alert.

Is there some sort of restriction to how long the tone can be (the one I want to use is less than 10 seconds long)? Or am I just SOL as far as this goes?

I think the limitation is the file type. I don't think it will let you use MIDI for alerts. It uses some other format like imy or something like that **I THINK**.

I succesfully increased ringtime on my T610 (with Fido) using the following commands.

**61*3436**30# SEND

where '30' signifies the # seconds it will ring for before the voicemail kicks in (a total of 6 rings will be heard by the caller)

'25' for 5 rings

'20' for 4 rings

and so on........

This------> *61*(your service center number)**30# Send, doesn't work for Fido or Rogers...

Solved this one by mistake. While transferring contacts from old phone I had to take the sim out and back in again. This seems to have solved the problem. Now I have the date showing and last call length only appears for a short while then it goes back to date. A sim removal and replacement (while phone is off) appears to do the trick. Good luck.

Next problem --> sometimes my timer freezes mid countdown. I had a theory it could be temperature related (processor overheating due to prolonged storage in a warmer place) but that doesnt seem to be it because only the timer freezes but all other phone functions are unaffected. Anybody experienced this ?

Hey this trick is perfect, now my phone dont get transfer after only 2 rings
Thanks for the tip Footmatix
But one thing tho, I've try to set it for 10 rings "50#" but it wont allow me to do so, is there any other ways?

Also, is there a trick to prolong the second it takes to auto-key lock? My phone will goes into keylock after only around 10 seconds (The menu clearly state it takes 25 second...)

Its very annoying to have the phone goes into lock just after I start to read a long message. I need to prolong this time badly
Anyone?

Anyone know how I can reprogram the joystick keys? Or even the side button that takes you online?

after browsing on this forum and some others and i found out a little trick to increase the memory on your t616 or t610. when i first got the phone there was like 18xx KB, and only like 700 kb were free, becuas eof stock crap. this likke trick in crease memmory to up to 2400 kb. it varies on firmwares i dont know why, i got 22xx kb. but any extra is better. so this is what you do

1. Do a master reset ># then master reset.

2. make sure you have a stopwatch handy. becuase after exactly 13 seconds, you need to take the battery out fromt he phone.

3. now put the batry back in ans boot the phone, the phone will take long to boot, mine took like 3 mins. after check your memmory status and you can add up all the stuff and get 2200 kb - 2400 kb. and all the stock crap will be deleted so you will have 1900 - 2100 kb empty.

try it

OK, this is my first time owning a SE phone and I was about to send it back for refund.

I was just comparing it side by side with my Nokia 8390 (both on Fido network) and I saw that my Nokia had 3-4 bars of reception and my SE only had 1-2 and it was fluctuating greatly. I just thought I had an inferior or buggy phone. But after reading these posts, I realize maybe I just have to adjust to a new brand. However, I do have a few questions about the firmware.

It's mentioned that newer versions fix the fluctuating reception indicator problem. Is it because it just changes the way it is displayed on the phone or because it's actually changing the way the phone picks up the signals?

I've gone into the "SW Informtaion" screen but can't make heads or tails out it. The info doesn't seem to match anything I can find here. Can anyone tell me whether I have the appropriate version?

Is upgrading the software/firmware complicated? If so, are there any places in Toronto, ON where I can go and just have it done? Thanks for reading.

Hi, I have been looking for a way to unlock my Sony Ericsson S700i, no luck so far but I found this incredible deal just for 40usd you can get a Free Sony Ericsson S700i Unlocked and ready to use... just have to buy a signal booster for 40 buck and then automatically you get in a waiting list, when your turn comes they will ship you any place in the world or send you the equivalent in money using PayPal. Really great system, I already have my phone, and now I'm in the list for a Dell Notebook.
check it out here just copy this whole link to your browser and you will see what I'm talking about...good luck
just click on the link and remember to delete the space between the "for" and "free" so the link can actually work good luck:

Just visit a flagship store in toronto and they will do it for free (that's if you have service from them that is) Look on fido's site, they will show you the locations you can visit. Only flagship stores I believe have the equipment to do the firmware updates for free.

Does this apply to Rogers Wireless as well?

This is an awesome sticky. Thank you all! I learn from accessing the service info menu to how to put a pause in preprogrammed numbers and where to hang off a strap! Learned alot from reading all 13 pages. Well worth it the time!

I do have some questions however...

1. Is the advantage of having an unlocked phone only enable you to use the phone with any service provider? If yes, I can see this coming handy if I was to travel internationally and perhaps purchase prepaid international sims (??) from the country I'm temporarily located? Is this something that T-Mo will be willing to do for international travellers?

2. I've seen previous posts where someone said "firmware upgrade made a difference"... what kind of difference and enhancement does it provide? I believe mine is ver R1S001. My signal fluctuates as much as 4 bars to 0 bars even when I'm sitting still not using the phone. Would a firmware upgrade correct this problem and is this something T-Mo will do as well?

Still learning how to use the phone..... Going to try connectivity between PC and phone via my palm pilot. Hope it doesn't prove to be too difficult. Just hope you experts are still around and haven't moved on to NEWER phones!

Edit: Just realize I didn't specify the phone. It's a T610!

Just wanted to say great thread as well. As the owner of a T616 it has been very informative.

Anyone have a T610 ? just curious on it's reception.. I have a T616 on GSM network and reception is poor.

I can not say about the T610, but it and the T616 are supposedly pretty much the same as far a reception and such. I had a T616 and dumped it because of the very poor reception and voice quality. I was very unimpressed with it as a phone.

I was on ATTWS and there has been some suggestion that their version of firmware and the network implementation may not have been the best possible combination. I do not know about that, but I found the result unsatisfactory. The two Nokia phones I have used since then have worked much, much better.

My wife and i both have T610s. We have had occasional reception issues, but our experience has been that they haven't been nearly as bad as what we feared they would be. In fact, we've been surprised at how good reception has been in areas that T-Mobile's personal coverage check shows as extremely marginal. We've also been surprised to get usable service in a few areas that are supposed to be nowhere near a T-Mobile cell and to our knowledge are not served by any of T-Mobile's roaming partners.

If I had to sum it up, yes, the T610's reception could be better, but it's not completely awful either.

Wow, still a trickle of posts about this vintage model! (Love it)

I've been looking around various games sites and can't seem to find word games for this phone.

Something for free would be great. It looks like Cingular has Text Twist, but I'm not sure it works on the T610.

Suggestions welcome!

Hello, I am a new user to T610. Its so far a great phone.
I got it for free from my girlfriend. I had to sell my Samsung D410
because I had no money. I also had to sell my car and all, because
I have to eat food.

anyhoo, I have couple of questions regarding this phone.

1. I was wondering if this phone is BT 1.1 or 1.2?
Would it work if I buy BT 1.2 headset?

2. As for the firmware, I checked mine and it says "R1S001".
Should I upgrade it? I got this cheap serial data cable(came with package)..
this is what it is.

Where am I supposed to connect this, and how to use it?
Is upgrading really honestly worth it? I should've gotten USB port,
but I got the serial data cable for free so.. hopefully I can use it.

3. If I can use the serial data cable, where do I have to go to get latest
firmware and how do I possibly upgrade it? how-to buy using serial port?
I did a search, and read this thread but didn't find much about it....

please help this poor guy.
I am using library computer so I have to get off now.
Thank you all for reading.

Hi,
I have been browsing these forums for a while now, and i must say, this is one of the most helpful places i could possibly imagine!
Anyways,
I recently upgraded my phone( had a motorola v180...till the screen went out...junk...) and i got a se t616. I read the manual, and these forums...and still cant come up with a good anwser to my questions.

#1- the 'post note' option under more....what does it do? and whats it there for?
#2- the bt...my friend has a palm with with WiFi/bt and infared. Ive read that i can send messages to people with the bluetooth...how do i do this?
The bt is turned on...but where do i see the people and send messages to them?

Thanks, if someone could, could you please put it in detail how to do this?
Thanks,
-Tom

as the name indicates, posting a note on ur standby screen. lets say u need to buy milk, u leave urself a note and everytime u use ur phone, u see ur message.

There's probably no point in sending messages via bt unless u are sending files to ur phone. ie if u wanted to send ur midi file to his palm, u go into ur ringtones folder, click the right softkey, it should say more, and then click the option to send, it will give u options to send via bt, ir, mms, etc. then it'll ask u to turn on the bt/ir/ etc on the other device u want to send it to.

ok...thanks for your response.
But...i do think it would be quite funny to do this in the Waldorf Astoria(this very big hotel in NYC)
Do i need a special program to use the message though or not?
Thanks for your help and TIA
-Tom

Posted by: tomw1021

ok...sorry for double posting...but
#1- do i have to use a certain program on the t616 or download a specific file to talk to other through bt?
#2- in the 'paint'...how come only certain pictures show up to mess around with? Like all the backrounds are there, but only one of the pics i have taken are there(ive taken about 7 or 8)
Thanks again!
-Tom

Posted by: tomw1021

also too, when i did the <*(whatever it is...i forgot the sequence)
i went to SIMlock and it came up with the following
Network (locked) 5
Network Subset (unlocked) 5
Service Provider (unlocked) 5
Coporate(unlocked) 5
I am assuming that it is unlocked? because the service provider has a unlocked lock on it?
TIA

You should be able to send files between bluetooth phones with no additional software.

I think the first one still indicates that the phone is locked. One way to find out is to stick a SIM card not native to your network in the phone.

well it's a few years old now, and there are much better handsets out.

And it would be "phone" as whether you buy the T610 or 616 depends on your area You don't find the T616 in the UK for example
