im just buying a used phone, and just wondering

Posted by: Casper

Telus Timeports are running 7654.

Posted by: frankie5string

My Bell Timeport P8767 is running 7574

Posted by: whitetiger604

my bell timeport is running 7088

is that old???

Posted by: frankie5string

Yes, you are probably lacking the flex for SMS and email addresses in your phone book.

Posted by: whitetiger604

how do i go about upgrading to the latest firmware?
just bring it to any bell world?

Posted by: frankie5string

Pretty much.... They'll ship the phone to the nearest Motorola Authorized Centre. In toronto it's a company called "FutureTel"....

Posted by: whitetiger604

ohhh...i thought they could upgrade right in the bell world store..
how would it normally take if it got shipped away??

cant be wif out my phone...hehe

Posted by: frankie5string

I've heard stories saying anything from 4 days to 4 weeks....

Posted by: whitetiger604

u gotta be kidding me.....4 weeks just to do a firmware upgrade on the phone???? dammit

Posted by: Casper

That's all shipping and handling time... Telus 8767's are still shipping with 7574, but I went to the Burnaby head office for the upgrade (I wanted my service tones back!).

Posted by: whitetiger604

what do u loose when u do an upgrade?? service tones?

Posted by: torontonian2001

When you upgrade the firmware, the first thing you lose is money, as Bell charges you at least $10 for a firmware and PRL upgrade.

Posted by: Casper

7574 improved SMS apabilities, but transformes the service and accessory tones to quiet little clicks..... I wanted them back, as I use them for diagnostic purposes.

Posted by: whitetiger604

so basically just the service tones and acess tones? nothing else?

what do u mean by acess tones by the way?

Posted by: frankie5string

This may sound a little rude. Could someone please contact Futuretel in Toronto to see what software version they have for the Bell Mobility 8767? There's a bit of a language barrier there (ie: poor english) and it's a little frustrating for both me and the guy I spoke to determining what they have...

Is there anyway to get them to waive the charge though? Those of us with the 7088 firmware "technically" aren't up to spec with their propaganda.

Their information flyers list the P8767 as a CH@T-capable model and instruct us to hit the Envelope Key and select Send Message, but with the 7088's we have no such option, so it could be like false advertising.

You know when you jack in your hands-free and it goes "beeeeep"? Or when you turn on your phone it goes "beeeeep"? From what I've read, it no longer goes "beeeeep" but rather "click".

On the upside, we get direct MO-SMS access and updated browser software. Unfortunately, there's the loss of beep's and in some cases it takes a long time to power-down the phone I've read.

Posted by: whitetiger604

so i take that u are on 7088?

i somehow want the sms feature, but i dont know if i want to loose those tones that u mentioned.

unless they come up with a new software upgrade to include then tones and the sms

Yep, I'm on 7088 too.

Word has it that Verizon has somehow managed to release a firmware version that brings back the tones, but it has yet to make its way to Telus or Bell Mobility.

You do have the MO-SMS feature, however, it's not direct as outlined on Bell Mobility's information sheets. You need to launch the browser, then select Bell I think it is and then Send Message. Unfortunately, since you're going online to do it, I think it'll eat Digital Data minutes which bank in at $0.25/minute. Much more expensive than the advertised $0.10/message of MO-SMS.

Posted by: whitetiger604

hmmm...interesting....im gonna have to take a look at the info sheet that bell has for the sms..

I going to bell world today anywayz, so i will just pick one up, and have a little talk wif the sales rep about that.....unless i get a sales rep that dosen't know jack squat, like usual.

i guess the sms, is not all that i guess.....

even when the web browser didn't work in my province, and it was searching for service, i got charged digital data mins, just for searching for service, now was just crappy.....

Posted by: Casper

Telus released 7654 because some of the 7574 StarTac's 'Went To Sleep' as they put it.... all I know is that we had to send 5 of them back because they wouldn't register on the network. My phone came with 7088, but it came back with 7574 after I sent it for service.... but I wanted my service tones back, so I went to the Burnaby head office to get the newest version.

The accessory tones is the same little beep that you get with the service tones... whenever you plug in a charger, data cable, or headset, it beeps..... with 7574, they were converted to clicks... but they restored them in 7654.

Clear As Mud?

Posted by: whitetiger604

thx for clearing it up

does the fix also fix the "vibtate then ring" feature???

mine dosen't seem to work, when i have that selected, it just vibrates, instead of doing both.

Posted by: whitetiger604

nevermind about the vibrate/ring, i got it working now

Posted by: frankie5string

Has anyone managed to find out from Futuretel what version of the 8767's software they currently have might be?
