Opinions on the 8290 to 8890 aluminum mod

Hi, I've been lurking around here for a while and I noticed that there have been a few posts about an aluminum conversion kit for an 8290. I did some research (basically searches in this forum) and I couldn't find enough information on it. I was wondering if anyone out there has any good/bad opinions on the mod. I really want to get it, but not at the cost of functionality. Thanks.

i've seen some on www.gsmsquare.com and i myself have seen some posts on how to do it instructions but forgot the site.

but anyways, check out gsmsquare and see if you like it. i think its the closest to the real thing that i've seen. but then again, i haven't really tried doing it so am not so sure about the functionality.

good luck!

They are pretty nice, just don't install them too quickly, be very careful, and take care in putting in the screws.

Once you get them on they are butifiul, but I have broken a kit but stripping out a screw head from trying to drive it in to tight. they are very nice kits though.

How much did you pay for yours?...
Is the quality of the paint (aluminum coating, whatever) good?...
Is it more durable compared to regular slide faceplates?

Well I just got a kit from Ebay. The seller claimed that it was the aluminum one (as opposed to the plastic lookalike). He's including a torx screwdriver and a leather case. I hope this works. Oh, I won the auction at $29.99 (and shipping was another $7.95 for Fedex 2nd Day Air). I hope this works.

i had the converison and it sux

i makes your phone bigger
the slide doesnt line up with the face itself

and sometimes my phone doesnt work with the conversion
when i dail to myself the phone wont ring and say missed call

Well, I just got it and installed it. It took me about 2 hours (I had a very hard time getting the volume button to work right). So far it is fair. I like the look, but it is not as functional as my old casing. I haven't been able to align the IR right yet. More testing and tweaking is required.

i always thought it was the ACTUAL 8890 housing? well guess not i know all4cell.com sells the REAL 8890 parts, so if anyone needs the black part that says NOKIA, they have 'em or the back part too.

hmmm..would a REAL 8890 housing fit the 8290??

and his the 8890 look alike housing the same size as the 8890 housing..like keypad, buttons, slide..etc?

Posted by: Gabbana230

ok ya know what? i think that instaed of all of this DRAMA i will go and buy a REAL 8890 and get it over with!

I have the conversion and its exactly the same as my friends fone.

I don't understand why some people are all excited about those conversion kits. You pay up to $50 for a conversion kit that doesn't really fit and spend a few hours installing it and hoping you don't break anything. After you do all that, you still have a Nokia 8290. People who know the 8890 will still be able to tell yours is a fake. People who can't tell the difference won't care what phone you have anyway.

actually..you can get them for 15 usd in HK..or even cheaper..

If u want the fone to show off well u should get it but if u want it to act like the real thing its not worth it.
The slide comes off and ive had alot of bad reveiws from the store i was going to, to convert my fone.

and don't forget the money you pay for changing to white LEDs

and after all that, no active slide...

get the NETT V800 and show that off...

unknowlegable people will be like:
"Hey you have the same phone as SharpST77, but with an internal antenna, awesome!"
