Bnzfixr,

is there any good for purchasing a buyback mbz car from a dealer or auctions?

Appreciate

Unless you are a mechanic, I recommend to stay clear of buybacks and auctions. There is usually a good reason why the car ended up in that
position . I have seen some good cars come from auction, but it takes experience or good luck to weed them out .

No, he does not use it for a Limo service.
It's his daily driver. He says it gives a "air of success". I'll take pictures of our families other vehicles later... Right now, I'm just off to hockey.

I drive a 2006 Pontiac G6

Knock on wood - absolutely no problems - not even an alignment since I bought the car in October 2005.
Very comfy!
Good gas mileage(for a mid-size) but really stinks in the city.

I meant to say Good HIGHWAY GAS MILEAGE.

Thats NOT my objective, but im assuming you're pretty redneck considering you have a South flag, a new camaro, and a 3rd gen camaro all in your sig (not to mention your lack of spelling correctly); which also brings me to assume you hate Hondas or anything to do with imports. Am I right? Perhaps that was your reasoning for the Fast and the Furious joke.

If you'll notice one BIG difference between the fast and the furious and me its that im not a ricer. I dont have R34 kits all over my car with a million stickers and cheap ebay parts. I spent the extra money for the NICE accessories and tried to make my car a CLEAN ride, not a riced out POS.

Oh, and dont be too upset when my 4 cylinder STOCK could woop the **** out of 3rd gen camaro such as in your sig.

The engine police called, your engine is mounted the wrong way! Jk man, that's one nice and clean ride! I like that CF hood look, like it's been worn out! Nice!!

I don't particularly like your choice in Motor oil though. GC, Amsoil, Redline or RP or go home!

Oh, don't even get me started. Can't take a joke, eh?

So, I spell "the" wrong (on purpose) and have a Camaro, so that makes me a redneck? Wow. Whoulda thunk it. (Oh noes, I spell wrong again!!!!1!) No, I'm not a Honda fan. Don't hate 'em, but sure wouldn't own one. Not if I wanted a performance car anyway. I don't need a manual tranny to have fun driving my car either.

My car (which only has the 3.1L V6 by the way) could give you car a damn good run for its money in its present state. If we had a drag race, it would probably be a tie at the end. Why? You have a little more HP, but I have a little more torque. Now, if I had any of the 3rd gen V8 offerings, I would win. Sorry. Just so you know, the numbers I found says my car had 140hp and 180tq stock, and I have a better flowing airbox and exhaust and 3.73 rear end gears.

*looks toward my protege5, she gets sad*

Don't buy Royal Purple, it's hydrocracked ****! There are reports that Mobil1 has switched to a hydrocracked base stock as well, sadly. Amsoil and Redline are still safe!

What's wrong with Mobil 1? According to technilube.com, it is not hydrocracked.

I'd eat both the Prelude and the Camaro.. but that's besides the point.

Anyway, Mobil1 is great. I've been using that since way back when I had the Prelude.

Just for my sake as one last reply to the matter; I would still win.

My car weighs ~2300lbs. 183whp, 162wtq (to the ground mind you), would even get your 3rd gen from a DIG, even though you have more tq.

Lets put it this way, 3rd gen camaro's are slower then (early)4th gen ones correct? LT1's? Im sure all would agree.

Well I pull a LT1.

MAYYYYYBE if you were full bolt on geared, and tuned we'd be even, but not til then.

BUT: I dont care to be made look like a ricer with arguing with any of you about how my Honda > * so consider that my last post on the matter.

On the bright side you don't have to consider option 4)Getting a job and paying for it yourself.

I don't see a problem with kids receiving a free car as long as they don't complain about it. And no, I'm not saying you are complaining just trying to be optimistic.

Used to it? Yes.
Given a first car? No.

But the reason I am ok with teens being given cars (or money for cars) is because I know working and going to school is hard to do and there was a lot of study time lost due to working. Considering you are that age only once, I would have also liked to hang out with friends than working for peanuts. At least its a humbling life lesson.

my first car was a 92 civic, i ddnt complain since it was nice beginner car, rice free, loved it, id take any car as long as it works and gets decent mileage and will last a long time.

I wasnt implying that you were or were not given a first car. I meant the fact that your geographic location is a prime place for kids who would complain about it.

There isint a LT1 I havnt raced that I've lost to in my area. I've raced about 3.

And to add to the fact, my header was ordered and will be here in 4 weeks. That will put me just over 200whp and 175wtq (after tune). LT1s only make 275 at the fly, which is about 255 at the ground; with their much added weight does it not make sence. I've raced all 3 from rolls (street) so as you would see I have some advantage I guess. Now I'll admit, early 4th gen's from a dig are harder to get, seeing as some can run 13.9 with a good driver. Then the late 4th's I cannot beat (LS1).

A lot of people find house 'modding' ridiculously excessive as well.

Don't knock on it just because it isn't what you like to spend your money on. Some people drop cash on wild home theatre setups, or on a really nice house, or on a sweet education.. what is so wrong about spending money to make a car unique?

I will knock it because I have every right to express my opinion. Spending money on a nice house or a good education serves more of a purpose than on car parts. JMO.

Word to that.

A house builds equity. A car depreciates.

I understand if you're doing this a business, you don't have to worry about the car value. You install equipment, charge for labor, and move onto the next one.

Posted by: clauretano

Some people just do it as a hobby (me).

yes, I know investing 15k dollars (no labor included in that price.. because I've done _all_ the work myself) into a Protege5 is a bit ludicrous to some, but the car is a blast to drive and no new car compares (they've all gotten too heavy) to the dynamics of driving this car..

yes I know it adds no value to the car and such, but the excessive maintenance on the car doesn't hurt... the car looks positively new with 90k miles on it, inside and out

..plus it's a hobby in another way in that I use the car for racing.. autocross and track days are so fun!

You spent of $15k in prepping your Mazda for auto-x!? Do you compete at a national level?

Posted by: Sfkn2

The P5 is a fun car (I had one.. search on the forums and you'll find pics!), but I don't know if I'd throw $15k on it... How well do you do in that car?

Posted by: mikebionca06

I love my car plus have a house due to my education..its a 1970 Lincoln continental mark III with hydraulics four punp setup with twelve batteries...I love working on it rather be in the garage then the house and going to shows is a blast...knocking someone on there hobby because you don't find it your niche is not right ,that's different then simply stating you would rather spend your money on a house...me I have a house car and provide for my family.

That's because you're not a car enthusiast like we are, we're passionate about modding our cars, it's our hobby. Car modding is expensive when we are working on euro cars, domestic and JDM are cheaper to mod therefore cost is relative. I mod my car to stand out from all the other stock models as mine. It is an extension of my artistic endeavor and I enjoy admiring it as well.

That's just silly, you don't have to mod a car in order to be a car enthusiast.

really only 5-6k of that was spent for 'race prep' stuff

I spend 3k on engine work (cams, ecu, underdrive pulley, header, midpipe (catted), catback, full 95 durometer crazy motor mount set, intake) to get from the 100whp stock to.. maybe 120whp --the mods weren't at the time meant just for race use, hence slapping me into street modified (.. I know at least the cams put me in SM), then some weight reduction (fiber images carbon fiber hood + paint (yay paint adding weight lol) which cost $2000 with paint --ok that was just for looks lol

then spent over 4 grand turboing the car (included things like a wideband, boost, oil pressure, and egt gauges, a dual ball bearing turbo, callaway manifold, front mount intercooler, etc)

I probably have ~1 grand in the suspension.. but it's nothing very special (or adjustable), just s-techs, tokico HPs (koni has no love for Proteges), poly bushings for most of the front and rear suspension, racing beat rear sway bar, strengthened endlinks.

then wheels/tires.. some 17x7 wheels that are UNDER 16lbs a piece.. that I scored for $475 shipped for the set.. deal of a lifetime, and some potenza re750s --I don't even have a separate wheel/tire set for autocross, maybe next season

.. and some audio work (another 1500 or so)

crap adds up crazy fast.. it's sorta an addiction :P

And no, I don't do well in autocross. I need a limited slip.. very badly. 200+whp funneled through my current 205-width tyres = I post worse times than before I turboed the car.

Realistically, if I wanted to be competitive with my Protege5, I would have competed in stock class. My car was already modded into SM before I even started autocrossing, so it was too late. I just do it because it's a blast!

Posted by: Skylinepilot

^^So you are one of those guys that just cares about having fun... Me too

You see that a lot where guys throw on a few mods and start to auto-x only to find out they in a higher class. Some guys just throw on a blow-off valve on a stock car and they have to run SM (although they may have changed that).

Do you have pics of your car?

Or it just means you like modding cars

I am willing to bet Clarkson from Top Gear is a bigger car enthusiast than anyone to have typed howardforums.com in their browser and here is what he thinks about us and modifying:
http://www.topgear.com/content/feat...ories/15/1.html

Now don't think I am sour on modifying cars. I have modded in the past but found it to be quite fruitless. Different strokes for different folks, just because you need to "express yourself" by putting a hood scoop on a car doesn't make you more (or less) of an enthusiast than someone else. Than are plenty of ways to enjoy cars, not just being the cookie cutter guy (or girl) that has to be original like everyone else and mod their car.

Posted by: crowesfan

Think of it as a canvas by which we express our art, oh and btw, I drive a euro car, no hood scoop or any of that juvenile garbage. Modding is no different than fashion, some people are satisfied with a Walmart or Target wardrobe while others prefer something more elegant and upscale from Neiman Marcus or eluxury.com. I mod my car to improve upon the stock aesthetics as well as the performance threshold, no stock car is absolutely perfect in every way, especially non-exotics. There's always a weak link on a stock car that could use some improvement.

My dream car is Porsche's 997 GT3 and eventhough I think it's the epitome of perfection, if I had one I'd definitely upgrade the wheels.

Posted by: Skylinepilot

Well, do you have something artistic to show us? This is the "What car do you drive?" Thread.

Perzbenz your car is definitly sick. i do the same thing as you and believe the same things that you are saying. i build my car so that it is unique from anything else out there and i don't mind spending the money on it cause it is what i enjoy. Are you with a team or just by yourself? i am with Team Hybrid so i have probably seen your car at shows.

Nah not yet.

I took the stang to infineon once a few years back... only ran twice and did 14.4x@98...I think it was stock, maybe a catback back then.

If I took the gto now, I'd be happy with high 12s around 108mph...

Ty, I couldn't settle on one at all, I was all over the place with which car to get.

First it was the Scion tC, then struck it down since it gets bad gas mileage for an I4, and it has no power.

Then it was the Subaru Legacy GT, struck it down for the higher price, and premium fuel requirements (though we do have the cheapest fuel here in NJ something like $2.50 for regular )

Then for some reason I jumped on the Rav 4 lol. Gobs of power, decent price, regular unleaded, very good fuel economy for a "SUV", and best of all, all the cargo space for moving stuff back and forth between NJ and Toronto!

I HAVE (don't drive much...DSM...haha) a 1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. ***** is still riced out from back when I was into all that. Been putting all the time and money under the hood for the last year or two. Can't wait to get it running again to have a little fun and sell the damn thing

Posted by: clauretano

lol DSMs.. are they really that unreliable? They seem like fun little cars, but they have a bad rap (crank walk)

Posted by: Dain

Well you have to be well educated on a DSM to really comprehend the probs. 7 bolt motors are what are prone to Crankwalk. all 95-99 DSMs had 7bolts and some 92.5-94 DSMs had them too. ANY car can crankwalk, just something with the desing of a 7bolt does it haha.

Most of the DSMs you hear/see broken had a BAD history.

Good ol 4G63

Posted by: Dain

Wouldn't necessarily refer to it as "good" but yea maybe something like that haha

Posted by: clauretano

I'd definitely call it a good engine. Aren't the Evos pushing over 900whp (as well as the stock ones of course) running the 'oldie but goodie' 4G63?

I'd pay good money to have the engine in my car. My engine (Mazda FS-DE 2.0 .. from back in the MX-6/Probe days, then the 626, and laid to rest with the 3rd gen Protege) pops if you boost it much over 200whp (which to be fair is double the stock wheel horsepower). silly weak rods and pistons, and an ancient engine overall

Well it goes two ways, most of the time they are known for un reliability. BUT you gotta think, a stock bottom end can handle just about 450HP, and I am shooting for 400 on my stock bottom end.

When you build them...unstoppable. The 7-bolt motors are weak because of the rods and unbalanced cranks but the 6-bolts seem to be the best.

Only probs with Evos right now are the trannies

I will admit that I have had a few problems.... Examples include the outside mirrors malfunctioning, the Anti theft alarm malfunctioning however, I did experience most of those during the warranty period = no cost to me.

Since then, it's been only wear and tear related repairs due to the fact that I do a lot of driving for work. So I wouldn't classify them as longevity issues.

All in all, it's a great car to drive; it retains its value better than most other cars...

Not in the 03-04 models. Seems you have an Evo9? Only prob, but not really a prob, for those is the 6spd gearing is a little different IF you have the 6 spd.

I think it's a good looking car, I mean compare to any other domestic sports compact model, plus it's in the Matrix . But, since I bought a bmw e60 recently and the CTS just sitting in my garage waiting to be trade in

You're right, it's not really a Cadillac of old, FWD, poor handling, too much torque steer, but it's a NEW Cadillac

CTS is nothing like the Catera man! I don't know how you could put those two in the same sentence! Catera was horrible exercise of badge engineering, like the Cadillac Cimarron...

The new CTS is smoking, though my only complaint is the grill looks too big.

BTW I wouldn't call the CTS, "compact" it's a mid sizer that's aimed to compete with the 5-series! BLS is Caddy's "compact" car..

Can't wait to see the new V8 Ultra that will replace the Northstar, and debut with the DTS/STS replacement..

Catera is more like a entry level vehicle, but the CTS is quite powerful and that's right, tuned by Germans! Too bad too many problems with it, I bought it brand new 2005 and already got 2 factory recalls and it's still having the same problems.... I realized you have to get the V-series instead of the regular model for the quality or may be I'm just bad luck with this one.
What I mean by compact is comparing to my brother's bmw 3 series and my friend's c-class, which they all fall into Europe sports compact model. CTS does have the most room, front and back, plus I love the design, much more tougher than a 3's or a c's. By the way, when you mention BLS, I checked online only available in Europe right? Very interesting. Thanks for your comments!

I don't take any honest opinion as an attack, that's why we are here That's right, the new CTS looks bigger and meaner, you can tell they are marketing for a younger crowd, I mean their designs are more up to date and the quality are comparing to European automobiles, to me that's a good direction. Again, thanks for your comment

The BLS is very much like the Catera. I haven't read a review of it that wasn't really negative overall. I actually think it might just be a badge engineered Opel, probably the same model the Catera was too. I remember reading what it is derived from but can't find the article now.

The new CTS does look really pretty in person, but the interior is too GM (though aesthetically, in photos at least, it looks really great).

I'm hoping Cadillac puts some more sense in their other modelsand kills off craptastic badge engineering efforts like the Escalade which tarnish the brand image.

Dude! We never mentioned CTS-V! That's a whole other animal.

Cheater!

If I could find one in good condition, I'd take a '91 STS over any new Cadillac (you probably don't believe me). However, I'd take an early 2000's DTS gladly. BTW, I loved the torque steer on the '91 lol. 275 ft/lbs torque felt nice!

Hey, atleast the little 2.8L has right wheel drive!

Caddy still has wrong wheel drive for the DTS, but that's going to change real soon!

Hey, the only difference with the V and the other models is basically the engine.

Factory recalls? As I recall, the only major problem with the CTS is the rear diff. seals.... I think GM forgot how to make RWD cars!

She still manages 36mpg highway if I set the cruise at 70, so I still call it economy. It's better gas mileage than I could manage when it was stock (breathes much easier now ).

tis a pitty they only made the Protege5 for two years, or they'd probably be way more common. They sold really well (especially for a wagon) during those years.

I saw like 8 billion rally blue WRXs today (autocross with 170 cars).. they make such an awesome noise though I'm sure the really growly ones were all catless.

Posted by: Skylinepilot

Wow, still getting 36mpg with mods? amazing!

Its amazing how Imprezas and evos have really made a presence at auto-x and rally-x events this decade. The WRX's can actually obtain a good boxer rumble with just a catback. The deep rumble noise they make is because of the unequal length headers they have. But there are a lot on the street running catless. Performance wise it actually helps quite a bit since running catless relieves a lot of back pressure off the turbo.

I just run a high flow cat. Even with an equal length header a WRX will still have somewhat of a different sound since it fires the cylinders in pairs. I don't think I've ever heard one though.. I imagine it would sound something like a porsche??

Posted by: Skylinepilot

hmm.... Never heard that before. The cylinder firing order on an Impreza is 1-3-2-4 (1 being at the nose of the car), I believe while one is firing the other side of the motor has a cylinder that is intaking. Now, some of the older imprezas had pairs of coils instead of 4 coils for each cylinder so they used to fire one bank (ie left side cylinders or right side cylinders) at a time. There would be one sparking compressed fuel in one cylinder and the other side would have a waste spark. Subaru did this to save money but cars like the WRX did not have this. I probably sound confusing so this thread kind of explains it (See US2JDM and Jude):
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...ht=firing+order

Equal length might sound different but people who have used a twin turbo EJ motor (which uses equal length headers) have said the rumble is almost completely lost. Haven't heard it myself either.

Posted by: clauretano

Boxer engine = the pistons reach top dead center in pairs

Though yeah.. 4 stroke, so the two pistons aren't in the same part of the combustion cycle when they both go TDC.

Posted by: B0000rt

Yeah, for a 4 stroke engine, if they fired in pairs, for 4 cylinders, you'd only have 2 power strokes firing for every 4 strokes, lol. You'd need to have atleast 8 cylinders to make this at all practical..

Hmmm Turbo on the Lightning eh

HP/Tq Figures? Timeslips? Just wondering

On 15 PSI it made 465/550 on my Mustang dyno, however I later found out that was only on 7 cylinders...

I'm in the process of swapping my stock cams back in as the ones I have installed currently are blower grinds and don't work as well with the turbo.

Did I post pics of the Evo yet?

I joined the thread probably in the spring and can't say I've seen them. Pics of any of the cars in your sig would be welcome

P.s. since I like asking evo drivers this.. does the hood on my car make you want to kill me?

So far 7 out of 9 laughed and called me a ricer.

I got the hood because it's functional my turbo makes so much heat under there. That's why I don't use the mitsu rain guard.

Plus if I was a ricer I would probably have left it unpainted (it's a full carbon fiber hood, frame and all), and I wouldn't have spent the money on Fiber Images.

Plus there is power to back up the looks, unlike what most people call a ricer.

my feelings won't be hurt either way, I just like to collect sample data :P

I don't mind that hood. It's pretty cool, but I think you should still put the waterguard in there.

it just steams off the turbo :P

with the plastic mazdaspeed engine cover over the valve cover it doesn't misfire in the rain anymore

the car is garaged (when I'm not on campus) and I use the stock hood in the winter, so I don't have any plans to put the water guard back in.. I'd have to find it anyway, don't feel like getting raped at the mitsu dealer for that piece again

Yeah, I noticed that on his sig. I wonder if he frequented any of the Prelude sites when he had it...

I picked up an SW20 a while ago. Just a dd, n/a.

That's a good looking Prelude. I used to frequent preludeonline.com and bayareaprelude.com - but don't be surprised if you see pics of the construction of the angel eyes. I'm not really on other Prelude sites, but the pics have been posted by others.

Thanks for the compliment. I could've moved on to a different car by now, but I've gotten to the point now that I will likely keep the Prelude until the wheels fall off, even if I do find a better one down the line. I'm on preludeonline.com as well (been a moderator there since '01, under SN "Jacques"), admin at www.stlpreludeclub.com, and frequent honda-tech.com (they have a large autocross/track following). I guess I should do a search of pics of the "angel eyes"!

i have a 2007 scion tc. with a nice system but i still have not done much to it. i have had it a year now and i love love love it. i always beat the big freaking trucks at the lights cause my baby is so light weight. of course i am sure they don't realize that we are in a competition but i do.

Posted by: jsarino

I'm posting one more picture to pimp the Prelude...out on the roadcourse at Hallett...

You may have to type it out, because any of us would have to be a member of the Galant board to see the thread you linked.

I drive a 97 Ford Escort wagon 5 speed. It only has 46k miles on it. It has a custom intake and a lightly upgraded suspension. Its amazing how well this little car can handle with just a sway bar upgrade. Whats also amazing is that I average 30MPG.

Posted by: R3ADi7

just got this last weekend for 6K. it has 106K miles on it and the engine is just awesome. my 98 firebird formula. the paint looks a little weird but its just some condensation.

my LS1

Auto or 6speed? How you liking it? The LS1 is a nice motor eh?

Posted by: R3ADi7

its an auto. i really wanted a manual but this was the best i could get with my money. regardless, the motor is so awesome. its insanely quick and i still manage about 22 - 24 mpg. its a great car and i love it. if the tranny ever goes out i'd like to put in a manual.
