I'll probably get flamed for this, but I think the statement:

"we expected that it would have a reasonable amount of longevity, certainly more than 10 months"

is kinda stupid. First, why expect anything from any company. Second, did the devices stop working when the P900 was released?

And saying things were implied in a white paper is far from a guarantee from a corporation of future support.

I'll be buying a P900 as soon as it drops in price by say half and it'll still be $600 but when the P1000 comes out 10 months from then, I'm not gonna get all huffy puffy when my P900 can't do the same things.

I agree with cmoney....this whole idea is fairly pointless. New products are released every year in this type of industry. One should expect things to be overtaken in terms of specs etc relatively quickly. I'm under no illusions that when I get my P900 in a week that within 10 months something bigger and better will be out. That's just the way things go.

Plus there are marketing reasons to not to put UIQ 2.1 onto the P800 namely selling more P900's....there have to be actual differences in the devices in order to sell them. The fact that everyone seems to be so hot to get 2.1 shows that interest is there and that many people will buy the P900 for that reason.

While I am sympathetic to the cause of wanting a better UIQ for the P800, it's not like this petition will be regarded seriously by SE anyway. If they act on it, then I'll be both surprised and impressed. But...if they did release UIQ 2.1 for the P800 it will be because they planned it all along, and not because of a petition.

i think the point here is:

UID 2.1 would be totally possible and easy to do for P800 users but why would SE do that - SE wants for people to buy P900 and not hold on to their P800s..... so the petition is totally valid...

it is not the point that you can not expect something from a company but if it was originally advertised as being upgradable then i do not think it is right for them to stop providing the best possible service just because they want people to buy the new product and i think that is the point of the petition....

I'm not bothering at all with a P900. I'm not going to do an upgrade for a marginally improved screen and a video recorder...

Maybe if it had a 2megapix camera, caller profiles, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, support for >128mb memory sticks, and 802.11 wireless networking.

I'll wait for the successor to the P900.

if you get UID 2.1 on your P800 then i agree why would want the P900.... but that is what the issue is we need UID 2.1 so lets sign this petition

Maybe there is a reason why P800 can not be upgraded to UIQ 2.1. Compare the flash sizes of P900 and P800.

P900 48MB flash RAM (P800: 32MB)

Maybe the UIQ 2.1 will not fit into 32 MB flash
(I assume they did not put additional 10 MB
of flash in P900 just for fun).

arne,

the 10 mb does not make a huge difference and if they could leave a couple things out and make it fit the 32mb...... lets face it if you can fit PC2002 within 32mb rom like with the pocket pc then i think UID 2.1 should fit easily....

if there is the will one will find the way...

But doesn't P900 use a newer version of Symbian as well and that UIQ 2.1 can't run on the older Symbian version ? There
may be other HW related issues as well, which we do not
see on the surface. It is normal that device manufacturers
adjust their HW to meet the requirement of the OS they
select, not the other way arround as this petition requires. Otherwise there would be a special symbian/uiq for each
device and that would definitely not be economically.
