Driving in Vancouver

I came to Vancouver (from Toronto) in September to attend UBC and I thought I'd be able to cope w/o driving for a couple months, but good lord, I'm dying...

I was planning on renting a car or something or other and Just driving until I can't drive anymore...but, like I said, I haven't driven for a bit...so I don't wanna drive around an area that's really hilly...

I was just wondering if any of you guys knew of any open area or a decent area to drive a 5 spd in? and yes I realize the difficulty I'll have finding a 5spd to rent, but let's just assume for the sake of argument that I can find one...

I'd really like to explore the city as well...and that's a big problem using the bus =\...

But anyway...any feedback is appreciated =)

With or without traffic?

The UBC highway is pretty good for that...might want to drive there later at night when there are fewer cars..

Richmond same thing..flat even roads, but hella busy until late night..

Also West 16th Ave or King Edward from UBC to around Cambie..wide lanes and all..

Sorry I can't offer too much, I don't frequent those areas..

take the highway outta town (towards seattle) after dark. you can turn around at whiterock ... not hilly, just one big long stretch of highway with curves ... nice highway lights, glow of the city in the distance ...

in the city: vancouver's kind of interesting that way — hills sort of pop-up out of nowhere. obviously, whatever you do, don't go over the bridges to the northshore if you want to avoid hills. it's practically ALL up-hill after the Lion's Gate or Second Narrows.

and avoid going up oak street from 2nd avenue! you gotta gun it in 2nd gear all the way up because it's so steep — i don't know how the residents on that street can park or start out there.

and Great Northern Way! i avoid that hill (the steepest and longest in the city) at all costs. the roll-back on that thing without the handbrake has got to be killer! even when i drove an automatic i was afraid of that hill.
