From the movie THE CORE, Mr. rat punched in a series of numbers and then blew into a piece of folded gum wrap and made a "beep" noise close to the tones from pressing the END key... He then said that "you can talk on that phone in long distance....forever". Would that ever be possible?

It's possible now. With any phone, landline or mobile.
You just can't do it free.
However, many cell phone plans include long distance these days (domestic LD at least), so it's no major deal.

As far as a cheat code with a bubble gum wrapper....nahhh

You might want to try listening to the directors commentary with that scene. I know its possible, just havent found out how yet.

Ever heard of the hacker magazine 2600? This may or may not be an urban legend: Used to be, with older payphones, if you could play a sound at 2600Hz into the microphone (whistles included with kids cereal with the ball removed happened to produce precisely this frequency) it would allow an indefinite long distance call for free. I think it was for emergencies or something like that... supposed to be a feature for people on the inside that knew about it. When phone companies found out that the public was getting word, the problem was patched (in most places).

Urban legend or not, it's going to do you absolutely no good on a mobile.

It was called Blue Boxing, and it was immensly popular in the late 70's and early 80's.

Goto google and search it.

If there was a way to hack to get free long distance, it definately cant be done at the handset level. You would probaly need to have access at the network level. Plus, I have not seen any reports of it being done before, so its probaly not worth the risk.

There's also something called Red Boxing. It's a modified radio shack tone dialer with a different crystal soldered into it. Ever hear a tone when you insert a quarter into a payphone???? Five quick beeps in a row.... that's what it emulates. Five for quarter, two for dime, one for nickel.

Dial 10ATT + number, "please deposit three dollars for the next two minutes".... "beep-beep-beep-beep-beep" "THANK YOU FOR USING AT&T"

Red boxes are the reason why the microphone is now muted until the other party answers. You can occasionally find a payphone that will still allow this, but I was doing this^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H but this was prominent five years ago or more.....

I'm pretty big into the hacking/security/phone phreaking scene... been doing it over ten years. Used to hack old mot cell phones to listen to calls, get free calls, etc, not to mention all the computer stuff, playing with dms100 switches, everything. I ran the RootFest computer security convention that was held in Minneapolis for 99 and 2000. If you wanna know more you can search for "lothos AND legions of the underground" or PM me

[EDIT: Anyways why hack a cellphone for this???? Most plans now come with long distance included for free!]
