Midi patch names for the VX 6000

Can anyone give me info on the midi implementation of the LG 6000? I have been trying to find any info on it's construction. It seems to conform to GM but does it use standard 0-127 patch names or 1-128? Or a subset of GM?
Are there any sites that have the patch names and numbers?
How many voice polyphony, 8, 16, 32, 64? how many midi chanels 8, 16, 32?
I am asking because a lot of ring tones I d/l'ed have been cheesy at best. I get a file and some of it sounds OK, and then a patch or two are assigned to the wrong instruments and makes it sound like garbage!
I want to edit the .mid files with Cubase and make some of these ring tones sound at least OK!
And to go into Cubase, do edits, save changes exit Cubase, test with media player and if it's wrong do it all over again!
So any help or info would be much appreciated!

And does anybody know what the button icon is on my message? Mine was the only one on the list that had it!

Alright, since nobody has a clue, I did a bunch of research and found almost everything on the qualcomm website. I signed up as a developer and got access to the info.
So i'll clue you in.
The MSM6050 the main chip in this phone, has a lot more ability than we talk about here.
But as far as midi, it uses CMX midi which is basicaly a portable type of midi for moblie and pda type units.
So basically it handles GM or general midi and has embeded wave files for each of the 128 basic GM midi sounds. The good news is these are replaceable with better sounds! I will have to wait to get the developers software before I can program new waves to the phone.
This opens up infinite possibilities for music on this phone. This makes this phone no less than a real synth that lets you load new patches or sounds for different songs.
So now I will be working on midi files that sound better with the stock phone sounds, and will work on changing the internal patches with very professional samples.
I have thousands and thousands for my music creation. It will be fun to make this phone sound like a band! Albeit on what sounds like a fancy AM radio.
Oh, and I didn't even get into the other audio aspects of this chip! Look for more info from me on the Qtunes built-in mp3/mpeg-4 decoder!
Here's some info from Qualcomm
Qtunes™ MP3 AUDIO DECODER SOFTWARE
HTTP://WWW.CDMATECH.COM
Overview
As QUALCOMM’s Mobile Station Modem™
(MSM™) platforms become more powerful, implementation of
such consumer entertainment oriented, multimedia applications
on the MSM becomes practical. A key component of
QUALCOMM’s Launchpad software suite is the Qtunes™ MP3
audio decoder software.
Qtunes MP3 software delivers high-quality stereo audio in an
embedded, wireless phone environment. Designed specifically for
cellular and PCS phone applications by QUALCOMM’s signal
processing experts, and optimized for QUALCOMM’s QDSP4000™
platforms, Qtunes MP3 software utilizes extensive digital signal
processing techniques to achieve CD-quality sound.
The Qtunes MP3 player is a complete, 100-percent software
implementation for MP3 decoding and will support the full range
of playback rates at either 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz, 32 kHz,
44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. Qtunes MP3 software eliminates the need for
dedicated DSP or application-specific chips. The integrated
wideband DAC on the MSM6050™ and integrated speaker amp
on the PM6050™ eliminates the need for any additional parts to
complete the high-sound-quality audio path.
The Qtunes MP3 player is a small-code-size, low-resource solution
for adding an unlimited range of high-quality music playback to
wireless handsets. For the first time, CDMA wireless handset
manufacturers can quickly and affordably add exciting and
market-differentiating music applications to their products. With
Qtunes — unlike designs requiring dedicated external MP3
decoder hardware — higher phone-battery life is maintained,
since the Qtunes software is executed entirely in the MSM device.
Qtunes MP3 software comes complete with a simple and easy-toimplement
API that supports standard playback functions such as
play, stop and resume. Qtunes MP3 software is flexible and can
be easily integrated with virtually any non-volatile memory storage
configuration that a handset manufacturer chooses.
Qtunes MP3 Benefits
• Fully integrated MP3 software solution for wireless handsets
• Optimized for MSM platforms
• Supported with SURF™ (Subscriber Unit Reference)
development environments
• Playback rates of 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz, 32 kHz,
44.1 kHz and 48 kHz will be supported
• PCM output is compatible with most commercial stereo DACs
• Easy integration with handset user interfaces
• Provides low-cost, 100-percent software solution to wireless
multimedia services without special hardware requirements

Hey I read your post..I'm excited to hear about better midis for this phone!! Most midis on here are pretty cheesey(but for now they do the trick)... I was wondering if you have gotten any further with those midis?? Let me know if you did...thanks

Oh, I have done tons with this phone! I only have a few midi's in the phone right now. Most are mp3's. I have found out that the waves that form all the midi sounds are in the chip and not flashable! That's a real bummer.
When I first read the doc's, I was under the impression that the wav's were flash upgradeable.
It's like an old Sound blaster card. Your stuck with the sounds. Supposedly, The polyphony will go from 32 to 48 or 64 notes. But that reamins to bee seen, and I doubt it will happen.
Given the huge number of new phones hitting the street from PDA's, flip PDA's, Blackberrys, and so damn many combo's it's hard to keep up! I don't see an of the mfg.'s doing any more development on any current phone other than firmware bug fixes. NOT enhancements/added features.
Sorry, but that's the way it is! And I'm sure it will only get worse!
Any way, to really get midi's to sound good on the phone, the best way is to find midi's that already sound OK.
Like if you do a web search for a tune you like in MID format, d/l and play with windows media player. It uses GM, so you will get a rough idea of what it sounds like on the phone.
If it sounds like garbage in windows, which uses the microsoft wave table GM synth module, it will sound like dung on you phone!
But you could hear each individual sound in the phones GM midi format by taking a simple midi clip, put a program change in the beginning of the file to GM 1 and send it to your phone.
Now all you have to do is the same for all 128 GM sounds, change the program change to 2, 3, 4, etc. and you will know which are OK and which are junk!
It's tedious, and would take a couple of hours, but do-able.
Maybe I'll do it myself and generate a patch table that give the instrument or sound name (gunshot, bird tweet, applause, etc.) and the how I think it sounds!
Oh well, maybe if I'm really bored!

Scott,
Thanks for all your efforts with this. I hope you get time to follow-up on this.
I've been messing around a little with a midi editor, and changed the voice patches to a few songs that sounded good. I was surprised how good the phone sounded while playing the new patches.
Looking forward to your list.
Thanks again!

greatscott.. Since my last reply I have been putting mp3s on the phone..They work and sound great! But I have one major question(That noone seems to know the answer to) How much info can this phone take?? Ive put a 1:42 long mp3 thats 762kb and a 40 sec long mp3 thats 300 kb..On top of that I still have all of the original midis plus some of my own midis! How far can you go? Is there a real answer to this or is it just a guessing game..I would like to put a whole mp3 song on the phone..Have you tried this...or how far did you go?
Thanks
Scott (im a greatscott also)

The 6000 has 8 meg of memory. With 1.45 to 1.6 meg taken up by native applications and firmware.
I have put about 5 meg of mp3's in this phone. I won't go over that, and I have since backed it off to less than 2 meg,
I only have my fav sounds & pics now. So I'm happy with my results.
I do have all the tricks and traps figured out!
Other than cracking brew 2.

I haven't bothered to make a list as they have all been covered in one place or another.
BUt if you have any specific questions, I most likely have an answer.
And I don't see my self sending 128 midi files to the phone to try out all the sounds any time real soon, so if somebody's expecting to see a patch list, don't hold your breath.
