'Best' Flip-Phone for Business Use on Rogers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have been a Roger's (Ontario) customer for about 14 years and am interested in replacing my current cell phone with a flip-phone for business use.
The important items to me are:
Clarity of audio (in/out), dependability (don't want to have it serviced frequenty), fairly good standby and talktime.
It does not have to have a colour display, camera, games, or calendar.
All suggestions are appreciated.
TIA.

I would not suggest any current flip phone model (T720, V60G) if you plan on going GSM, but if you stay with TDMA probably the best flip (RF and voice quality) is the V60T ('T' stands for 'TDMA' version).
If you want to go GSM then T616 and 3600, 3595 and C56 are good choices.

Hope this helps.

I am not familiar with the GSM vs TDMA.
Can you please point me in the right direction re reading up on them (as non technical as possible.
TIA.

Okay, well if you've been with Rogers for as long as you have, you probably easily remember the days of Analog (scratchy reception, battery life of less than 8 hrs stdby, talk time of like 45 mins, etc.
Then they went digital, to a system called: TDMA, which stands for Time Division Multiple Access, if you're interested. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications, and is the most widely accepted form of PCS service worldwide.

Simply...

If you are a world traveller, it may be worth your while to buy a 'World' GSM phone with Rogers, hence it will work in most European among other countries, while keeping your phone number - no need to subscribe to another service if you're travelling. (Talk to a Rogers rep., they will tell you which ones are 'World' GSM phones and which ones are to be used only in North America). GSM offers superior voice quality, by virtue of it's design over TDMA. Battery life on GSM phones generally are unmatched because of their design, and network access method.
GSM phones also use a SIM card, which carries all over your account information AND your phone book lists inside of it - no need to go to a Rogers store to change your phone - you can buy an unlocked phone, stick your SIM card in it, and BANG it's active.

Currently Fido and Rogers AT&T are the only GSM providers in Canada.
You'll find as time progresses, Rogers AT&T are moving away from TDMA (old digital) system and moving to GSM system, because GSM system can also handle MORE user traffic - and that's good for them from a cost perspective!

Any other questions let me know... otherwise there is a plethora of information on the web, as well as this forum.

Well the V66 isn't that bad and its pretty cheap too. RF in my opinion is okay i've had it for almost half a year now and i've never really had trouble with reception except for in a few buildings at York U, but then again all rogers subscribers have trouble in those same buildings so its not my phone.

something you may want to know before you go and buy that TDMA phone:

-All new towers from rogers (most since mid-2002) are all GSM only, so that means you will not be able to take advantage of the new/improved coverage

-Get something that has GSM 850 (trust me, and a million other people on this one) some phones with GSM 850 (3595) will kick any GSM1900 or TDMA's phones *** in some areas
v66 and V60i are 1900mhz only, so not the best in rural areas

T720 is pretty good (has GSM850/1900) has colour screen, and alot of people hate it, But i personally thing its a good phone (has external display)

If you wait a bit the LG 4010 is a basic GSM 850/1900 phone (no colour screen or fancy features) that is a good low-priced option, it is not avaible yet (no external dosplay)

the samsung S307 is also not available yet: But has colour screen, GSM850/1900, external display etc

no word on RF performance on both of these

T616 and 3600, 3595 and C56 are good choices
are great non flip options

Steve,

Tks very much.
Very helpful.

PAF,

Are the LG's as well constructed and sturdy as a Samsung?

Posted by: allanc

PAF,

Rogers (customer Service) offered me a T720 at a really good price, but I passed on it due to generally negative opinions I have heard about Motorola flip phones.
A flyer from Rogers (last week) was promoting a Samsung Flip with camera for about $340 with contract (if I remember correctly).
I don't need colour or a camera and for that price...

I strongly suggest a non-flip model, only because the new Samsung has not been proven on the network yet - simply not much information on it yet.

My two top picks from the current Rogers choices (from personal experience):

-Nokia 3600
-Sony-Ericsson T616

...for around the same price you mentioned.

I'm like you, I don't need a camera, but the two above phones probably offer the best RF and voice quality (yes they both have the second Rogers Band of 850MHz).
