Review of Nokia 6360

My first words about this phone have to be WOW! I have never been as impressed with the overall performance of a Nokia phone as much as I have the 6360. Having owned several Nokia TDMA and GSM models, I am hard pressed to say that this phone has the best overall RF performance of any Nokia that I have used, and with the available voice equalizer, the best sound quality of any TDMA phone I have ever used (comparable to any GSM phone).

The 6360 is a bit different from any other Nokia that has been produced for the US (with the possible exception of the 6310i). It features large graphical display similar to the 7160/7190, but is much easier to read. Additionally, the fonts can be adjusted in size. I have tested the phone with AT&T Wireless service in the US, and I have to admit that I have yet to have a dropped call even while I was deep in buildings where my 7160 would have no hope of getting signal.

This nokia has one of the most comprehensive voice feature set of any produced to date. It has space for 20 voice dialing commands, can be set to perform various functions by using your voice (i.e. change profiles, activate infrared, etc), can be used as a voice recorder (works with phone conversations as well....watch out Monica Lewinsky), and has the all so cool voice equalizer function. The equalizer is neat in that it has several predefined profiles (normal, light, dark, etc.), but also has the ability to be customized to your own tastes. Not that you would necessarily need these features with the 6360 as the sound quality is superb, and you hardly ever hear any background noise on the phone.

As stated previously, the 6360 has the best RF performance of any TDMA phone I have ever used (looks like Nokia has perfected their internal antenna design). It most definitely beats the Nokia 7160, and is also better than the Nokia 3360 with SW 2.06. I also have found that it holds signal better than either the Motorola V60t or SE T60d.

Additional features of the phone include the built-in vibrating alert (finally!!!). Now you dont need to buy any seperate batteries to make the phone vibrate. And it has an extremely strong vibrating alert as well. In the arena of profiles, the 6360 stands out again. Not only does it have all the profiles that other Nokias have, but they can be programmed/timed to activate on a regular schedule. So far this has been really useful with my classes in the hospital and for going to the movies. I no longer have to remember to turn my phone to silent or vibrate.

The phone is a strong messaging and email device as well. It features predictive text input, with expandable dictionary. It sends and receives SMS and email, and is capable of picture messaging and mobile chat as well. You can download at least 5 pictures to your message menu as well (either from free websites, or from the 6360 PC Suite). I have also been able to use the messaging features with SunCom/AT&T's ONDEMAND service (their "version" of wireless internet content), and it works really well. I get information through these services as fast as I did with Cingular's WAP service (without losing minutes ).

The Service's menu on this phone has been disabled by AT&T, but I have an unlocked version coming for my Cingular account, and I should be able to test it out before too long.

Infrared works amazingly well as well. No problems transferring contacts and info between my old 7160 or my fiance's 3360 v2.06.

Something I like about the software on the 6360 (version 01.09) is that when placed in the handsfree car kit, the phone does not switch to the hansdfree profile, but rather still uses whatever profile is activated, and does not display the handsfree title on the standby screen. Rather a little speaker appears below the profile name with sound waves emittine from it. Rather trivial probably, but just a little something I like.

Battery life is outstanding, and so far has lived up to the 5.2 hour talktime that Nokia qoutes. I have talked for almost three hours today on the phone, and it still shows a full charge. Removing the battery does not have any adverse memory effects. Standard battery is Nokia BLB-3 lithium ion, and makes the phone weigh in at 4.2 oz.

Menu speed, as with most if not all Nokias is extremely fast, and have experienced no software hangs to date.

The phones comes preloaded with five games (Space Impact, Snake II, Pairs II, Pash N Rush, and Racket). This phone, unlike the 7160 is capable of two player games, and can vibrate during playing the game.

I think this covers the majority of what I have discovered with the phone. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email or PM and I will try to answer. I will also try to post some pics soon. Thanks, and enjoy.

this is an awesome review! =) i think i will trade in my motorola v60t for this nokia phone.. i've heard mix reviews about it from other users on the board.., tomorrow when the attws store will be opened at noon i'll be there to trade in my v60t.. why?

#1) phone customiziablity! having a set profile at different times and having it automatically adjust is truly a gem! =) worth the move

#2) Nokia's menu.. you can't beat there GUI.. it's the best out there! plus there plethora of ringtones and using the laptop to send the phone's tones will be ncie again.

#3) RF.., the motorola has great reception too, but i can't wait to try the Nokia's work at perfecting the internal attenna.. that would be awesome to see a nokia like that!! =) wooow!

#4) Battery life.. i love phones that last more than 2 hours that the motorola did.. crap.. that was so bull.. i don't like charging it every nite, it's a pain in the butt.t..

#5) The look aren't too bad if you can get away from how long it looks.. its actually a good thing so now my g/f can hear me loud and clear hahaha =)

but thanks for the awesome review! actually howard just put up his review too, but he doesn't address many of the issues that were important to mee, but you did.. thanks again! !=)

so far so good. I have had mine for about a week now and it seems very good for both on network and off network.

another feature that I like is the ability to shut off the feature definition. on my old model (6162m) if you waited too long a definition came up, not any more just shut that sucker off!

also in test mode you (after you activate test mode *3001#12345# - go to field test and enter 2101 and you are in test mode) you can see that it is scanning the best redio channel for you. in my area some of the towers have as many as 15 redios on the tower and it scans them all to find the best frequency.

don't play your radio with voice dialing, as the background sound doesn't allow me to dail out using the voicedial mode until i turn the radio down. - maybe i need to get auto-muting for my radio when i am using my phone.

i travel alot in my car and this phone holds call quality great. even with the amount of time i roam this battery seems to hold its charge. (nice thing for all you 8260 users is that the batteries are interchangeable) I have charged mine twice in the week that I have had it and have over 5 hours of talk time on it and 7 days of stand by.

I waited for it to get here and was worth the wait.

Can the Alpha Tag be changed on this model like the others? Also, I currently have an 8260, will ATT let me upgrade to 6360 at a lower price? Or will I have to pay the full $150US. Oh yeah If you upgrade, can you keep your old phone?

Thanks.

If you pay the full non contract price, i think you can keep your old phone.

what do you mean by

Additional features of the phone include the built-in vibrating alert (finally!!!).

didn't older models have this too? i know my old 8260 did.

Posted by: doctob

Other 5100/6100/7100 phones, at least in the US, didnt have a built-in vibrating alert. The 8260 (i believe)/8290/8890/8860 were the first US Nokia phones to have that built-in feature, but were of a totally different class than the 5100/6100/7100 series phones.
