to unlock or not to unlock ?!

To unlock or not ?!
I purchased an U.S AT&T SE T616 phone,i sent it to a guy and he unlocked all the codes except the AT&T code, now i tried the phone with orange sim card and it worked however i want to use a local company sim card in my country. Now AT&T gave me an unlock code something to do with the NCK number, however they say that i should have put this code right after unlocking the other codes, the at&t guy seemed alittle hesitent he said that if it doesnt work that it might not work at all anymore or if i try to unlock it twice it will lock completely. What do u guys think, i mean if it doesnt work will that then even lock the phone against orange service...what should i do ?
