O.K, guys. Let's put this one to rest right now. It looks like small quantities of the new Sanyo Video Phone have started shipping this week. I'd expect to see it by the weekend at Best Buy and Costco primarily with a few pieces at the Sprint Stores, according to preliminary plans. As employees, we cannot purchase them until Dec. 5th, mostly to satisfy what is sure to be a huge demand once word gets out. Anyone is who is also an employee of the company will know this to be true as it was seen in our system as of today. Hope this puts those at ease thinking that this phone will not come out 'till February. It 'ain't so!

This very good to hear, I appreciate that we have sprint employees that are here to help instead of just criticize and spew sarcasm. Monday shall be a very joyful day indeed.

Wow my 5500 is sooo close....

No problem. There's been info on this phone in our system officially for a few weeks now on the 5500. I've been checking out the online userguide for it since it's been posted where we check out info for our complete phone portfolio. It's definitely going to be a hot product. It's my next phone to!

I should mention that we had a visit from a rep from Audiovox yesterday and he had a phone which he says is slated to be available early December as well. It's Audiox/Toshiba's competition for the 5500! Though it didn't have Ready Link capability, it was a full-featured video phone with a 256K color display on the inside and a 65K display outside for the caller ID window and a loud speakerphone. The screen inside the flip was absolutely gorgeous! When you see it in the next few weeks, you'll know what I mean. He called it something like QVGA. It's a Toshiba developed display that is very close to OLED. It was stunning to say the least. The rest of my staff were taken back by it. Pictures looked awesome, though the 15 second video portion was a little on the grainy side. It was pretty cool anyhow. If you've seen the A600 or the VGA1000/A620, think of the multishot mode only a little smoother. There was a drop in quality in the playback of a video as opposed to just being in the "My Camcorder" mode and moving the phone around. Everything improves in time, right?!? Zooming was done either from the menu options once the phone was open or using the volume keys on the left side of the phone. It recorded audio pretty well. The menu system looks similar to the T608 where there are about 9 icons on the screen. Size was a little wider than the 5300, though shorter when I held it up to my ear. It was the typical silver outside and a cool blue on the inside along with bright blue LED's for the keypad. Nice tropical screen background reminiscent of the beach scene from the Virtua Fighter series too! I wonder if they'll keep the Toshiba name on the outside of the phone. I asked him how much memory the phone had and he stated that it had something in the 3MB range, which sounded right given its capability.

He also stated that this phone was ready to ship right now and that it could feasibly be available early December. This could be one of those products that launches "covertly," if you will as there is nothing in our system even discussing it just yet. He didn't quote me a price on the phone only saying that it will most likely be in the $299 to $399 range, which should be expected. The Video Mail option will launch on the 24th on a trial basis with usual $5/month add-on for it eventually. Hope this helps, guys. There's a lot to look forward to going forward!

Do you have any pictures of this or the name of it. I believe Ive seen it before but im not sure. Oh and QVGA is the term for the resolution of the screen, its bigger than normal or whatever, this phone has a camera and flash right, i couldve sworn ive seen it somewhere.

Wow, that phone looks really impressive. The color looks more like an off white and blue than silver, which I like, I'm SICK of silver phones. And the top half doesn't seem to be huge and heavy like the A620.

Does anyone know anything about the external screen they use? Is it visible all the time like OLED, or does it basically disappear without a backlight on like TFT?

And I was sooo close to getting the sanyo 5500

The link to the specs doesn't work. If it has SMS, then it's an alternative to the 5500. Without it, it had better be at least $100 less with no RL and no SMS.

I wonder how the reception will be compared to the 5500.

Nice find on the pics of the new Audiovox/Toshiba. That was the phone we had a chance to hold and play around with. Like I mentioned in the previous post, the display is extremely beautiful. No OLED-like display on the outside caller ID window. It kind of dims out like the A620/VGA1000, but it's still visible pretty well. We hope to have some 5500's in our system tomorrow so the excitement continues!

Downsides of this phone, audiovox doesnt have much camera experience. If this phone didn't look so cheaply constructed I might've wanted to wait for it over the Sanyo 5500, but I suppose we'll see. This phone might be ugly but it seems to have good hardware, although the ext screen is 65k STN rather than TFT, which i suppose is good as stn uses less battery, but also looks crappier, but hey its an ext screen. better than the internal of my moto

Now i remember where i knew qvga from... thats the resolution on sharps gx22!!! 262k and that reso i think i just might have to buy this phone the only differance between the two being this has an STN external. Hopefully its not insanely expensive cause theyres a good chance it will be.

yep, you're right. I almost bought a Sharp GX22. It's funny, if I remember correctly, going to phonescoop and typing in Sharp, I BELIEVE it led me to the Audiovox phone. I can't remember exactly though. But, I do know Sharp brought me to a different phone.

Well, we got our shipment of 10 units today and all I can say is that I'm extremely impressed with the quality of the new Sanyo 5500! The camera is really smooth, much like the Samsung A620/VGA1000 and it almost exactly the same weight/size of the SCP5400/RL2500. I put the battery of the 5400 on it to test it out since it was fully charged. I love the dark blue color and nice backlit blue LED's on the keypad.

After trying the camcorder mode on the Toshiba/Audiovox, now known as the 9950, I can say that the Sanyo is noticeably sharper in playback and ease of use. The screen is really nice, though not like that new 9950. No biggie for me there. I'd be hard pressed to find somone dissappointed with this one after trying it out. Capture mode for pictures works much more efficiently than our other camera phone, in my opinion. It loads the captured result much quicker than the 5300, though a tad slower than the 8100. It's very minor given what it is. The menu system is pretty much exactly like the 5400. They're the same phone in both look and size anyway. It will be a long week waiting to pick this one up. I'll give further impressions as I check it out but rest assured, it is definitely the phone to get as we close this year out.

hey bones, you said costco is getting them maybe end of the week?? Any more solid info would be nice, if not i guess i can pick one up at the local sprint store, minus the freebie's

Got one at Fry's for $247 and a $130 MIR.
