Let's get rid of the 8600 blinking banner

I have talked to some people at audiovox and at Verizon because this blinking banner is driving me crazy. Evidently, this is the deal: People with bell mobility don't have this problem because bell doesn't require an ERI on the outside of the LCD. Verizon requires the ERI to be displayed so that you don't have to flip open the phone and answer it to figure out whether you're gonna get charged for roaming.

Anyways, I thought up a solution to the blinking banner thing that satisfies verizon's demands for an ERI, and our demands to know what time it is, and who is calling:

the outer LCD should look like this normally:

Verizon
Wireless
10/24 6:58

and like this when someone is calling:

Verizon
Wireless
Joe Schmoe

Additionally, if the phone isn't set to "Active Flip", the ERI information doesn't need to be displayed at all, as you can see the inside of the phone before picking up.

At any rate, I called Verizon wireless and talked to someone in their technical department and he had this sent in to the programming department as a request for the next update... I'm not sure that's gonna do it... so I'd like everyone who's annoyed with the blinking pattern to call 611 and get this to be a top priority.

thanks to all who help!

Interesting reasoning... other phones solve this by simply having a 1X...D...Solid R...Blinking R icon on the outer display. The 8600 doesn't have such an icon?

I also dislike the blinking 'Verizon Wireless' and hope it's addressed in a future update. However, I am able to disable it (and my guess is everyone else with Verizon should be able to as well) by doing the following...

Menu -> Settings -> System -> NAM Setting -> Auto NAM...

If Auto NAM is set to 'Yes', set it to 'No', then set it back to 'Yes' again. If it's already set to 'No', change it to 'Yes'. This will remove the blinking 'Verizon Wireless' on the outer screen as well as the 'Verizon Wireless' banner on the inside screen. Only one problem...

It goes back when the phone is shut off and turned back on. However, I only turn my phone off once every couple days to charge it, so it's not a big deal to me. It has become part of my routine when turning the phone on, only a couple steps to get a few days worth of using the phone with no blining 'Verizon Wirelss' message. I don't see why this wouldn't work for everyone, but I'm interested in seeing everyone else's results.

Hope this helps.

hmmm...

PGENS - maybe that's just not "ENHANCED" enough for Verizon. Or maybe they're just covering their butts. who knows.

BUCKIN - I've tried the Auto NAM thing, but i think it goes back to blinking once you switch towers. Maybe not that, but well before i turn the phone off.

My point is that the blinking icon is good enough for every other Verizon clamshell phone... I know of no other that does this on the outer display.

It's been a month since I got rid of my 8600 over this issue... does it have an ERI icon on the front LCD?

I think most of the verizon clamshell phones i've seen lately have said Verizon Wireless on the outside of them. most of them also have a lot more real estate than the 8600. I'll keep my eyes open though. Maybe its just a rule for new phones, and they just weren't thinking when they decided how the ERI info was going to be displayed.

Really? That's odd because I have never had anything short of turning the phone off bring the banner back. I work 20 or so miles from my home and generally use the phone in about a 30 or so mile radius of my home and it's never switched back for me.

Interesting indeed. It's not a perfect solution but so far it works for me, and is probably at least worth a try. Of course, an update that takes care of this for us is really what we need.

The 8600 does have this icon.

I'm on MTS (Bell clone) and on the outer display, there is, when on a 1X network, the following

<signal strength> <phone icon> 1X<battery power>

<time>
<date>

<GPS locator icon>

No blinky banner. The only thing that comes close to it is that gay clown thing when you turn it on. I'd like to get rid of that, but really, how often do I see it?

with verizon a gay clown is the least of your worries.

wait... that should be their new slogan!

lol!

that's a pretty good slogan actually.
you should email their marketing department with it and see what they say.

I tried the set nam to auto. I live in an area where the signal is weak and as soon as the sig drops out it returns to blinking.

What is the PRL version on your 8600?

I tried the Auto NAM thing and it works for me. Like the other post said when it lost the signal it switches back, but I hardly every lose the signal here. I think I can keep changing it until they have another way to fix it.

Posted by: davieboynj

Well, Verizon has at least ONE person who called their tech support department about the problem. It is, after all, more fun to complain about a problem in a forum than to the people who can actually fix it.

I emailed AudioVox on the 8600 and one the required fields to enter was company. The company I work for just made a major switch to Verizon so MAYBE I'll get more attention????
