SL55 USB data cable connect - WTF?!?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

on the siemens SL55 firmware 'how-to' website, under instructions for connecting, one can find this wonderfully esoteric statement:
"Be sure to use COM1 or COM2. If using the USB Data cable, be sure to map the port to COM1 or COM2. ... If your phone was not detected. Then use the manual selection of the COM port."
now, i'm no forrest gump when it comes to computers, but what the f**k does it mean to "map the usb port to a com port" and how the hell does one go about this?

Assuming you are using some newer version of Windows, you just need to install the drivers for the USB cable and then hook it up. By default it will choose the earliest available COM port (3 in my case) and then tell the software that you are using to talk to your phone (the Siemens Data Suite, e.g.) to check for your phone on that COM port. Using COM3 gave me no problems. If that isn't working for some reason, you can go into your device manager and change which COM port the USB cable is using there.

In windows you can force your USB connection to use any com ports (ie 1, 2) in device manager. But as prev post said.. any port btw 1-4 should work for most apps.. but some apps such as sky-lord's java enabler will only list ports 1-4.
By default.. my usb cable maps to a virtual port com 7
hope htis helps.
