Tutorial: How to put mp3 rintones on your LG VX6000 for dummies!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Lenahan2001

This simple step by step detailed guide will teach the novice user how to place MP3’s onto their LG VX6000 phone. I am doing this because I was a novice looking for a tutorial, but I kept getting confusing responses from other members that were experts.

Prior to installing MP3’s onto your LG VX6000 phone you must have the following:

1. A USB Data Cable For your phone with the correct installed drivers. I would highly recommend that you buy your cable from AccessoryGeeks.com. I personally have worked with the company owner, and at one point was an official reseller. Checkout this link...

www.howardchui.com/bdatacablesb6.html

They include alot of extras on the CD, and they ship extremely fast, plus offer technical support
for free.

2. BitPm version 0.62. Free Download here…

http://www.cowger.us/bitpim-0.62-forVX6000-setup.exe

3. Sound Forge 7.0 Free Download HERE

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fi...ileidx,1,00.asp

Detailed Step by step process…..

1. Select the MP3 that you want onto your phone.
2. Open Sound Forge 7.0
3. Go to “File”
4. Select “Open”
5. Navigate to your MP3
6. Press “Open”
7. Sound Forge will open a 2 bar line display of lines going up and down.
8. Bring your mouse to the black line in between the 2 bars.
9. Locate the start point of where you want the mp3 clip to start.
10. Click on the start point of the clip and drag right around 30-60seconds depending on what you want.
11. Be careful not to drag over more than 80 seconds of MP3 music, because that MAY compromise your phones internal integrity. 60sec’s should be the most.
12. Verify that both sections of the music are highlighted. (It should take up all of the display area.
13. Press “Play” to preview what you highlighted.
14. Hold down “Ctrl” and press “T”
15. Go to “Process”
16. Go down and click on “Resample”
17. Set the “New Sample Rate to 22,050 Hz
18. Press “Okay”
19. Click on “File”
20. Click on “Save As”
21. Click on “Customize”
22. Click on “Convert to mono”
23. Click on “Bit Rate”
24. Find and click on 32kbps, 22050 Hz
25. Click “Ok”
26. Go to “File Name” and rename your clip with a short title.
27. Click “Save”
28. You mp3 clip is now ready to be placed on your phone!
29. Open BitPm V 0.62 ß must be this version
30. Make sure your phone is on and connected to you computer. All usb drivers must be already installed for the phone.
31. Click on the “Ringers” folder tab
32. Click “Add”
33. Locate you mp3 clip that you saved.
34. Click “Open”
35. Click on “Data”
36. Click on “Send Phone Data”
37. Click on the white box (check) to the left of “ringers”
38. Click on the “Add” button on the right of “ringers”
39. Click “Okay”
40. Wait a minute until BitPm says “Ready”
41. On you phone go to the menu.
42. Press 7
43. Then, press 2
44. Find you song and it will play automatically.
45. Click on “Set As” to set the ringer as “Caller Id” or “Restricted”
46. Your finished!

Note: Your phone will handle 20 ringers max. There are other methods of getting mp3’s to your phone, but this was the easiest way for me.

Let me know if this tutorial has worked for you.

Nice writeup. I'm adding the original tutorial that was posted here a few weeks ago. I think it is a little easier to follow (8 steps compared to 46).

Method #2

This tutorial will explain how to load MP3's onto you LG VX6000.

Software Needed:
1] BitPim v.61
2] Sound Forge (Optional, can be retrieve from soundforge.com)
3] LG1200 USB Drivers installed and working

Hardware Needed:
1] LGVX6000 (OEM) Data Cable or Future Dial LG1200 Data Cable (Not Tested)

NOTE 1] Steps 1-3 can be omitted if desired, it is simply to reduce the size of the MP3

NOTE 2] This method will erase all your ring tones, you will have to reload them using the data cable or by MMS. There are methods of adding ring tones to the phone without erasing all of them first, but that involves edited the map files located in "/download/dloadindex/". It is possible to load MP3's onto the phone by simply naming the MP3 to another ringer on the phone and overwriting it (including the
.mid extension) this method has been proven successful as well.

STEP 1] Select any MP3's you'd like and load it into soundforge. Find and highlight the part of the song you would like to use as your ring tone.

STEP 2] Select Edit -> Trim/Crop...you will see that only the part of the MP3 you've selected will remain. You may want to play around with highlight the Beginning or End of the song and selecting Process -> Fade -> In or Out depending on your preference. This will prevent the song from ending abruptly. I've also found that the MP3's play very low on the phone so by selecting Process -> Volume... and using the preset "200%" usually helps (NOTE - If this is done with a song that has heavy bass, it will usually distort the sound much like loud .qcp's on the VX6000.

STEP 3] after adjusting the song the way you'd like, select File -> Save As... And rename the file to something else.

STEP 4] Navigate to the directory in which the MP3's lives and rename it to "filename.mid" (i.e. - change the extension to .mid).

STEP 5] On your VX6000, Select Menu, My Media, and Music. Then hit the right soft key Options, then Erase All. Do not power off you phone after doing this, this is important b/c your phone will then rebuild the map files upon booting and that is NOT what we want.

STEP 6] Open BitPim (or Gagin) and navigate /user/sound/ringer on the embedded file system. If you are using Gagin you will need to patch the apploader so that it points to "/" (the root directory). This can be done with
BalPatch3.

STEP 7] In BitPim, right click on "ringer" and then select "New File..." Locate the new MP3 you've created and renamed or any MP3 you'd like as long as it has been renamed to .mid. Let BitPim upload the file.

Note - The MP3's I’ve loaded have been around 30-45 seconds long and are usually under 400K. I currently have 6 MP3's loaded totaling 1.88 Meg. I have not tested the phones limits as far as memory is concerned. Just be careful not to load too many as you may loose functionality such as phonebook capacity, MMS capacity, gallery capacity, and so on. Also larger files take very long to write to the phone, this can be very annoying.

STEP 8] Power cycle the phone and check under Music on your VX6000. The MP3's should be there. You may delete the preset ring tones that have been rebuilt if you wish.

There have been reports of extremely long MP3's taking some time to play but eventually work fine. I have not tested this. Trying to Picture Message these ring tones don't work for files larger than 30K. When using MP3's smaller than 30K you can rename them to .mid and send them to your phone via www.vzwpix.com

Thanks for the repost. I wrote this detailed step by step tutorial because I didn't fully understand your tutorial and it took me some time to figure it out. My tutorial was designed for the computer illeriate.

Anyways, people can use either tutorial, which ever one works best for them. Now they have 2 guides instead of one.

Yeah, I just added it for an additional reference.

Dude you friggin ROCK! I have followed other tutorials, like the one that is posted after your orginal post above, and it worked for 4 files for me... I did nothing different, just stopped working. WIth you tutorial I have filled my phone up and my fiance's with no problems at all!

Thanks mucho grande!

Thanks for the compliments Kedogn.

I was in the same situation as you were, once I played around with Sound Forge after a few hours I figured it out. I know how complicated some tutorials are ( I origionally used the tutorial posted after mine too! ) I wanted to make a step by step turtorial that even the computer illeriate would understand. Once again thanks.

I am by no means a computer illiterate (I do programming, web design and build computers), just new to all of this cell phone stuff. Had no clue you could do so much with a phone.. so thanks again for the help

Posted by: Lenahan2001

Kedogn,

I'm sorry if said that you were illiterate. Maybe I should re-phraze it to "cell phone illiterate" or just simply "for anyone that's having trouble." Once again sorry.

Oh, no... you didn't. I was just stating that I wasn't, but that this tutorial of your's was great. Just saying even those that know alot about computers sometimes need new things spelled out clearly for them. Until I started doing research on the VX6000, I had no clue someone could do the things I have learned to do from reading this forum.... even though I can do just about anything I need/want to with a computer is what I was saying No harm and certainly no foul

Posted by: Chimera

I wholeheartedly concur. This forum has been of tremendous help to me with my VX6000. I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my USB cable so I can play with Bitpim and MP3 ringtones. It's great to see people taking the time to write tutorials for the more complicated tasks. As Kedogn said, even though users may know a lot about computers and other technical matters, it still helps to have step by step help when doing something for the first time. I certainly wouldn't want to wing it with a $200 phone and have to go begging to LG or Verizon to fix it if I messed up the filesystem. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: Lenahan2001

Would it be possible to make this forum "sticky?"

There are many new post daily asking the same questions because these post get burried quickly, and most noobies don't know how to search.

Plus we have 2 methods for users to try.

i get an error message every time i try to download soundforge v7 is there any oder program to modify mp3 thanks alot

Posted by: EvilSweetness

This forum rocked! Thanks for the info! I just took it one step further though....

You don't need to get the USB cord or the software to interface the phone to your PC. Simply edit an .MP3 file to limit it to less than 30K (I use Cool Edit Pro), rename it to .MID, then send it via email to your phone!

How do you send a file to your phone you ask?
Well, just type +1(area code)(your number) in the ' TO: ' area (i.e. +19015551212), attach the .mid file you renamed, and be sure to put something (anything) in the subject line and main body of the message. I use 'test' for both. Why these have to be there is beyond me, but I run into problems on occasion if it isn't done that way.

Good luck!!!

Funny this post comes 24 hours after I posted the same info to BrewBackups.com...

http://www.brewbackups.com/forum_viewtopic.php?21.2855

...too bad you didn't include a step-by-step for the newbies, including settings and alternative ways to send rather than only from the picture gallery on vzwpix.com...

This info wasn't anywhere on the forums until I posted it on the 27th, when you quote somebody, at least give him or her credit rather than "I just took it one step further though...."

Sending the midi file through e-mail is another method with one big downfall, the size being greately limited to 30K or less.

Using the method above you midi file is only aprox under 10 sec. (Mine were about 3 sec max)

By using my method above I have currently OVER 45 minutes of MP3's on my phone, and my phones integrity has not been compromised.

-Ryan

-----Yes, I DO have over 45 minutes of MP3's on my VX6000 phone, and still have 20 wallpapers, and 10 saved pix messages, 90 (total) saved txt messages.

Trying to add a simple midi ringtone to my vx6000. I have BitPim.62. I go to the Ringers tab and add the midi file then go to DATA ---> send phone data -----> check ringtone and the add bubble ----> i click OK and get the following error:

Posted by: Lenahan2001

Simple answer.... you must have the wrong verison of Bitpm

Before I upgraded to the modified version, I had the same problem as you.

File "com_lgvx4400.pyo", line 537, in saveringtones

Notice the "lgvx4400.pyo" ..... it says 4400 model when you have the vx6000 model.

My version says

File "com_lgvx6000.pyo", line 537, in saveringtones

randyman,

If you want me to give credit where credit is owed then.......

Thanks, Ryan for taking your own unpaid time to make a tutorial for everyone to use.

I made this tutorial by MYSELF with no help from you! The whole reason why I wrote this tutorial is because your tutorial stinked! You left users trying to figure out some complicated things on their own, I told everyone how to put MP3's onto their phone, the method that worked for me.

So, yes I'm mad when you try to take my work and say it's because of you when it's NOT. This is my OWN work NOT yours.

Sorry about the bickering, just get mad when I spend almost an hour trying to write up a good tutorial, and someone comes along and says that they deserve the credit for my work. Some people just need to think. But I'm over it.

On the double post - fat fingers, what can I say.

Actually, this forum is mild. Just go to the ReplayTV forum at AVSForums. Make one little mistake, or ask a question that was asked in 1998, and it is flame city. Or just rudeness.

I understand what you are saying. Sometimes you have to state your position. My opinion is - keep all comments as positive as possible.

Beleive me, there are lots of posts that I see that are tempting to reply negatively to, but it would not accomplish anything.

Peace to all. This is a place to share, learn, teach, have fun.

I am sure it has been said before - "I LOVE MY VX-6000!" Not perfect, but one of the most pleasurable phones I have ever used.

Hi. I just bought the VX6000. Putting MP3s on my phone as ringers caught my eye. I just ordered the USB cable but have not recieved it yet. But in the mean time i tried skimming an MP3 down to 27.6kb. After doing that I did what was written, i changed the extention to .mid and emailed it to my phone via vzwpix.com. I tried several times, with and without text, etc. I am still recieving errors...any suggestions on what i might be doing wrong???

Posted by: physicsboy

If I'm not mistaken MP3's have not yet been sucessfully transfered to the phone via anything but the cable. So I think you had better wait that one out.

Posted by: blulegend

I just transferred an mp3 (29k) to my VX6000 by number@vzwpix.com. I have the Mobile Web and the unlimited txt/pix combo.

All I did was rename it .mid and attached it to the email. I've tried a larger file like 250k but it said unsupported file because I think it may have been too large.

if you rename a .mp3 to a.mid and make sure it's under 30kb...it will work fine when sent to your xxx-xxx-xxxx@vzwpix.com email addy...try it out before you're "mistaken"

Posted by: pjchrispy

Thanks everybody. I realized what my problem was. I was directly uploading the .mid file to my vzwpix.com account instead of emailing it from a third party email account (yahoo!). Once i did that i was able to play the ".mid" file on my phone. The sound quality is great for a ringer....but it will only get better.

Posted by: blulegend

Anyone know how to make these 30kb mp3 ringers repeat? Mine only rings once then stops.

Posted by: flexia

you would have to make it repeat in the program. which would make it 60k. the phone can't repete mp3's as far as we know.

Posted by: randyman

Ryan,

I was kind enough not to mention that in my last post, but since you want to take this conversation the nasty route and not credit the ORIGNIAL author, then you got it! Your damn 1,204,985 STEP tuturoial isn't clear nor consice. I got a headache just looking at it. Infact, after reading it i became confused on how to load MP3's onto my VX6000. Ohh yeah, by the way....there are a few missing steps in your tutorial i thought u might have wanted brought to you attention.

Continue flamming and you will be banned.

Posted by: Lenahan2001

Randyman,

I'm sorry that a tutorial designed for dummies was too hard for you to understand. Luckly alot of other users seem to think it's awesome, just read some of the replies!

When I made this tutorial, I did not look at anything from your post. I made it all by myself by using the method that seemed to work the best for me. I don't see how you deserve any credit.

Last but not least, this is a forum, not a fighting ring. When you talk about scratching body parts and engaging in sexual activities, you've lowered yourself to a 5th grader having a temper tantrum. Act like an adult, be civil. We're all here trying to learn new info for our cool phones.

how big are these MP3 files you guys are uploading? i made one that was only 22seconds long but is was 1,900kb! i thought i followed the directions correctly but apparently i missed something....

Soon2BMaxed,

I don't use Gagin but using sound forge and bitpm V0.62. Did you make sure you followed these steps...

15. Go to “Process”
16. Go down and click on “Resample”
17. Set the “New Sample Rate to 22,050 Hz
18. Press “Okay”
19. Click on “File”
20. Click on “Save As”
21. Click on “Customize”
22. Click on “Convert to mono”
23. Click on “Bit Rate”
24. Find and click on 32kbps, 22050 Hz
25. Click “Ok”
26. Go to “File Name” and rename your clip with a short title.
27. Click “Save”

My current ringtone is the ENTIRE Nirvanna "Smells like teen spirit" song which is over 3.5 minutes long.

Good Luck

Posted by: blulegend

What's the point of having an entire song when it will only ring for 30 seconds or so before forwarding to your VM?

What did you use to send the file to your phone? Just a regular email client with the phone number as the recepient?

Posted by: Lenahan2001

Soon2BMaxed-

My biggest ringtone so far was "Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana" which was loaded through Bitpm at 1034254 bytes....it took awhile to load but plays great!

blulegend-

Your right, a ringtone only will play approx. 15 sec. It's more or just a toy to show off to others, no other purpose. I'm just trying to see how much will fit. And no, I'm not trying to turn it into a mini portable mp3 player ;=) Just having fun

Transfering Ringers via Cable = Does it use minutes?

I am easily assuming that downloading attached ringers from verizon picture service that it does use minutes.

I'm currently working on putting the entire "Qeen-We Are The Champions" onto my phone. It takes some time using sound forge to edit the songs characteristics to make it fit, but I'm having fun trying.

Oh, and forgot to mention, that I'm trying to fit this song on with my other entire song "Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit"

So, I'd be the first to say that these VX6000 phones hold alot of infomation for their small size.

Sandstorm -

Before I bought the cable I ran into the same problem. Everytime I send myself a tone via e-mail, my tone was only 2 seconds in length. There is a more technical way of lowering your midi file size but it involves alot of editing and sampling. My suggestion is that you buy the cable. I bought mine for $30 on ebay which came with 300 midi tones, the cable, BitPm, Gagin, and all the installation software to connect your laptop or desktop wirelessly to the internet. Plus you can save your pictures from your gallery without using airtime. I absolutely love it! Just my opinion though.

Let me know what you want to do.....

When i first listen to my converted midi file after sending it through pix message, the file plays loud, but after i save the file and go to My Music folder to listen to it it is very low?????? I used SoundForge to edit the MP3 and Qualcomm's Purevoice to convert the wav file to .qcp........then change the qcp file to midi.....................Is there something i'm doing wrong??

Or is there another way to send mp3's to your phone without a data cable?

Posted by: trilogy

Nice Post Lenahan2001!

I have been able to upload 5 full songs into my VX6000. Very smooth. Thanks again man.

Posted by: Hoonyo

Regarding the 30K MP3:

I created a 26K MP3 using Sound Forge. I named it "test.mp3" and renamed it "test.mid" and sent it to myphone#@vzwpix.com through Hotmail. But everytime I get the Pix Msg, it says "Failed to play pix Msg."

Any ideas? Just trying to pass the time until I get my USB cable of course

Posted by: Ajs24

Ryan -- excellent job!! but i cant find the Convert to MONO button in SoundForge and also In bitpim 6.2 -> It will only let me upload .mid

It works great. Thanks for the great post.

Thanks for all of your effort.

Posted by: Subtle

Thanks for the awesome post, Ryan. I ordered a cable and just tried it out last night. I've put about 8 songs on my phone already! (I didn't realize my phone had so much ***-kicking power when I bought it!)

hey all,
i've tried emailing myself a .mid file several times...from the verizon pix site, vzwpix.com and from my other email accounts....but my phone never gets an attachment. i just get a txt message on my phone that says i have a picture message and to log onto their site to see it. have they disabled this? this .mid file is only 27kb, so it's under the 30 limit...
it's annoying the crap out of me!
thanks!

You have to set up your account first at www.vzwpix.com Once you do that then you will be able to see pix/ringers on your phone directly.

I don't quite understand what i am doing wrong. i got the usb cable for the lg vx 6000 from cellularaccessory.com . It came with the drivers and i installed them with no problem. i have both bitpim (designed for the vx 6000) and sound forge 7.0 installed and working. i have opened an mp3 file and followed the directions as originally posted. i then add it to my phone and it goes in fine, i can see it on the phone. but when i hi-lite it, it doesnt play! what am i doing wrong?! ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is the same problem I have been having. Anyone have any suggestions?

Does anybody know if this works (or can work) on a 4400? (I didn't read the whole thread, sorry if this is said already.)

Posted by: rockcrown

you won't be able to email the rings to your 4400 but I don't see why you wouldnt be able to add the mp3z

Posted by: cousins

i figured out what the problem was. for all you having the same problem, when you go to save the song you have edited (as directed by the original post) you need to select '.mp3' from the file type list. i didnt see that before because i was always looking for '.mid' but since it isnt there i was just saving it as a '.wav'. anyway, thank you to everyone, especially Knock.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post but I've lurked for a while here and learned a lot. I used the instructions in the first post but when I try to send an mp3 file to my phone I get this error message (using the bitpim for the vx6k that I got with my data cable).

Any suggestions? I don't know what this means...

It could mean a couple of things: Either your MP3 file is too big. I had that problem before so I shrank it to under 400K. Or else you have that music file open somewhere else, ie Soundforge or your music player. So make sure all other programs are closed that could be using the file.

Question: anyone know of any key generators or cracks for Soundforge? The trial is ending soon, and well, you know...(being a product of the "Pepsi Generation" )
That program works great!!!

Can You put the mp3s on the 4400??

why dont you follow the instructions here and try it for the vx4400 - ive heard some ppl way it does and some say it doesnt - then let us know how it goes

ok i am a lil new to this...i dont know how to rename the file to .mid i save the changed mp3 to a folder i have in my documents ......can anyone help ?

Posted by: joko1425

Ok guys, just wanted to say that I ordered my data cable from ebay on Friday 2/6 and got it today 2/9 (I'm in Cali, and I think they shipped from WA). I followed the instructions step by step (all from the 1st post) and was able to get everything working flawlessly. If you're getting an error, check the version of bitpim or soundforge you're using. If you get the same versions as the first post, you shouldn't have any problems.

So this is also a thanks to Lenahan for writing up that turorial. W/ out that I'd either be paying for ringtones or just living w/ the stock tones. Nice job.

so can anyone tell me how to rename a mp3 to a mid to send to phone via email ?????

I'm having the same problem - can anyone help.

Posted by: adams828

yeah, i'm having similar problems. just got my phone (usb cable is supposed to ship soon). anyways, so first i made a short (5 second) mp3, renamed it, mailed it to my phone.. it works!!! very cool. so then i go hm, 5 seconds is too short. so i make a low quality, 15 second, 20K file, send it to my phone... and it says "failed to play pix message"!!! i've tried multiple files, some near 29K, some near 15k.. nothing seems to work?? grrr anyone know why not??? thanks for the help

Posted by: jplive

when i try to rename file it just renames the song i made....ie looks like this "usher" then when i click on the file in a screen on the left side of my screen it says usher.mp3.....so when i rename it to usher.mid it shows up usher.mid.mp3 .......any ideas on whats wrong here? thanks for the help

Posted by: adams828

jplive:

you need to set your computer so that it shows you the extension when you browse. right now, when you see "usher", the file is really named "usher.mp3", but windows default is to hide the ".mp3" part.

open the folder where the file is, and go to "tools-> folder options" then click on the tab that says "view" underneath that, you should see a bunch of check boxes for options. find the one that says "hide extensions for known file types" and make sure it is unchecked. click "ok".

now your file should show up as "usher.mp3" in the main viewing area. now you can rename it to "usher.mid"

Posted by: jplive

thanks adam that worked.....

Posted by: original_hiryu

i tried everything on the tutorials to put .mp3s on my 4400 but it doesnt work. Well i can get it onto my phone but it just doesnt play =\. so i guess it is just for the 6000

I'm having the same problem with my phone also.

I renamed the tone as a midi file and it is small to send. But I can't receive the ringtone?

Any ideas?

Posted by: thepunim

Guys, if you have LG software version 6, you do not have to go through the trouble of converting MP3z to MIDI - just use BitPim to Add an MP3 file as a ringtone to your phone. Simple as that. You can use Soundforge to cut a 30second out of the MP3 that you want to use - but don't have to go through the hassle of conversion.

It worked on my phone, should work on yours as well.

Your file is too big. Cut the MP3 down to under 400K and it will play perfectly on your phone. That should be about 30 secs of music.

Instead of saving it as a wav file, save it as a 64Kbps MP3. It will make it a much smaller file so that you can upload it to your phone.

Posted by: jplive

" thepunim " this is not an answer to our ? so why post what is "your" answer to our problem?????????? if you can answer my ? a couple threads above without giving "suggestions" thenn please do so ..............

It's SO GREAT that I've found this board.

OK, I've printed out the relevent parts of this thread, and I followed the instructions.

Using SoundForge, I cut down an mp3 to about 12 seconds. I set it to 32kps, 22,500Hz, converted to mono, chose .mp3 from the dropdown list.

With less than 12 seconds of music, I still have a file that's 47KB. I thought by that point it would be under 30KB so I could email it to myself.

Any ideas?

Posted by: joko1425

Well I tried that too, had an mp3 down to just a few seconds but still couldn't get it smaller than 30KB...so I just broke down and bought a cable.

Not to be funny, but you should get the data cable and then you can have a MP3 file up to 400K. So you can get 30+ secs of music on your phone.

It is real easy to upload it via bitpim.

If not, then you will just have to keep shortening the song to get it under 30K to be able to email it. Or pick another song that might not have as many words in it to be able to shrink the size.

Posted by: jplive

do you need to have the internet on your phone to recive ringtones via email????? if so then why can i send pictures to the phone without it having internet?

Posted by: FlavorD

You need to get the Verizon service that gives you picture messaging for $4.99 from Verizon. I just did it last night, and it's been working for me.

I ran through the wallpaper pages linked to from other threads here, and I've been emailing them to myphone#@vzwpix.com, and the phone then gets a pix message, diplays the pictures, and I save them. My main screen is now an American flag.

I've also deleted out the cheezy cartoons preloaded into the phone. I had run out of graphics memory until I did that.

Posted by: FlavorD

Oops, I see you have Nextel. I don't know. I guess call them and ask how you can get pictures emailed to you from other people. They should have something for that.

I also was assuming you're using the VX6000, as that's in the title of the thread. I think you just need to have conversation with a Nextel rep who's got a full brain. The woman I talked to last night at Verizon didn't.

She told me I could get a "virus" by emailing myself music files. I'm "not supposed to be doing that." Shut up. I'll decide what to do, and you can't remember where the dots are in a your own company's web address (really).

Posted by: jplive

so i guess no one here can answer a a simple ? put on this thread not only by me but by others as well.........and flavord or whatever your name was i do have unlimited pix messaging on my"""lg6000"""" ............ ohhhhh yea a lil side note to you flavord......objects on internet may not be what they appear to be...i.e. yes ii do have a nextel...my work phone...but i have a lg 6000 personal phone....so dont let the lil pic on the side get to your brain...ohhhhh wait it already did

Posted by: joko1425

JPlive you need to calm down man. Have you tried calling verizon to see if they know why you can't get the files you're sending to your phone? Maybe they can help. Obviously if no one here is answering your question, it's either a) no one knows, b) the right person is not reading this thread, c) they just don't want to help you out. FlavorD had zero sarcasm towards you, it was directed at the verizon rep he was talking to. All I see is people trying to help you out, and you flaming them cuz you're not getting the answer you're looking for.

Posted by: FlavorD

So, I assumed that you'r information was fully correct, and it wasn't. Who's fault is that? Take a Valium.

From all indicators on other threads, you don't need to have the ability to see web pages to get ringtones. I can tell you that it's true for getting pictures. I can't get web pages, but I now have about a dozen new wallpapers because of emailing them to my phone.

The limitation is that your ringtone needs to be under 30K, apparently. That kind of sucks, so I've bought the cable from ebay. People apparently have entire megs of ringtones using that.

Have you read this thread?

Posted by: jplive

i tried cutting down the size and its only 27kb and when i send it to phone the phone says attachment dropped......

How are you all changing a mp3 to midi? When I try to rname a mp3 to .mid all I get is a mp3 with .mid in the name.

For example, I have a mp3 named "ringer" When I right click and select rename, I add .mid to the end of "ringer". When its done, all I'm left with is a file called ringer.mid.mp3

I'm using win2k if that matters. Any help would be great!!

Thanks

Also having that problem

Posted by: FlavorD

OK, using the advice from this thread: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=313723
I solved it, and have since loaded five mp3s as ringers.

I had to uninstall all drivers, and reinstall the FutureDial drivers. Apparently I had driver conflicts from having two different ones for the same device. Then I attached the phone, the hardware detection wizard cam up three times, and it put in the three new entries in Device Manager.

Then BitPim wouldn't talk to the phone, but crashed every time, so I uninstalled it, and reinstalled, and I've been doing the happy hampster dance through the office since.

Posted by: FlavorD

Oh, and I haven't had to change the extentions to .mid. I have version T60VZV06 on my phone.

Version 6, I think that is.

Settings, Phone Info, S/W version.

Posted by: FlavorD

I'm also going to recommend Audacity as a program to cut and re-encode your mp3s. It doesn't have a limit on the encoding, AFAIK it's freeware.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you have the cable, the sound quality is kind of up to you. I'd definitely lower it, as that little speaker won't sound really good no matter what, but I've used a couple different settings, and the phone has taken them all. It's not set in stone. One of my ringers is 395K.

Since Sound Forge isn't Win98 compatuble, I used Audacity to edit Mp3. I renamed it as a .mid file. When i upload it to my phone using Bitpim, I see the song on my phone but it doesn't play...help please!!!

since when isnt sound forge windows 98 compatiable ???? i have been using it for years on windows 98 and no problems

Posted by: FlavorD

I haven't had that problem, so I don't what advice to give you except maybe this: don't change the extension to .mid. I forgot about that entirely before I tried it, and it's never been a problem to have it as .mp3.

Posted by: stevefink

Completely silly question.. as I'm still awaiting for my cable to arrive.. but how much does the quality of the mp3 diminish when all the decoding is done... also does actual voice/singing still sound clear?

Really excited to try this out.. going to order the OEM VZW USB kit..

Posted by: K00lGuy

What a great tutorial, worked great! The songs sound great, I did lower the bass on some to reduce the distortion. I love it, I have transfered files over 1 minute long, in fact, I have 2 files over 1 minute, and at least 10 around 30 seconds.

The songs sound as good as they did on the computer, just increase the volume, and take out some bass. I used Sound Forge, worked like magic.

Thanks to his forum string, I have learned that donloading mp3 ringers of my favorite song clips to my VX6000 is possible.

The process is pretty easy overall. The tutorials are great. Only comments I'd add are:

- I did not need to rename anything to .mid. Not even sure why
you should, a .mid and an .mp3 are completely different.

- I didn't really want to use a $400 piece of software to convert
editted .wav's to .mp3, so I investigated other file converters
(as in FREE). It seems like the most important element of
making an .mp3 ringtone is getting it in MONO. MusicMatch
Jukebox 8.2 has a free basic version which will do this just
fine. As far as the 22 Khz and 64 Kb/s, I suspect you can
vary these parameters (I got one to work without setting
this up by accident).

- Only that out of date preliminary version of bitpim 6.2 for
the VX6000 works. Why didn't the newer 7.x versions
allow the .mp3 downloads too? Annoying.

So all I do is: use free MusicMatch to rip an mp3 off my CD. Use
a .wav editor (EAC or KISS are free) to get about 20-30 good
seconds of a clip (400K or so in size). Then use MusicMatch to
convert to a MONO 22 Khz 64 Kb/s mp3. Then use bitpim to
download (DON'T use the filesystem feature, only add or
replace via the ringtone tab, as only that procedure fixes
the index file).

Okay, now my Question: WHY does this work? LG does not
advertise downloadable mp3s. Other phones (Moto V400)
do. You are left with the impression that only .mid's work.
I realize Verizon doesn't want you to download 'cause they
have paid Get It Now ringtones. But why would LG software
work and not be advertised?

Yeah, we hear that a fair bit. I don't have an answer for you, except to recommend that you get the cable. Everyone says it works great (inlcuding me), and it's free from then on.

Hey everyone....

I'm back after 6 months or so.....

I'm glad to see that everyone is having a good time using my instructions. And I understand there are alot of people who are still having problems. I have the new version of bitpm that I will be posting on my site pretty soon for download. This version fixes the problems with wallpapers and in my opinion uploads faster. I'll post a link up once I have the file hosted.

Anyways, I'm just happy to see how many people have actually looked at my positngs. Thanks to all....

I'm planning on visitng these forums alot more often now so.....

Thanks for all the support and compliments,

Regards,
Rayn

i didnt really want to sift through all 9 pages but theres a really easy program called Goldwave that i use. All you do is open whatever file, left click for the start and right click for the end, hit copy, hit new, hit paste, highlight the empty area, delete it, then save the audio as whatever. i ususally save it as 44khz, 96kbps, mono

Evidently it doesn't work 100% of the time - I know I've had alot of trouble doing this I continually get my attachment stripped - guess I'll buckle down for the cable...

Images work great for me through vzwpix.com however...

I played with the files on my phone for the first time tonight...I only downloaded the images iI had on my phone. I must get an MP3 Ringtone. that would be sooo Kewl. But I don't know if this would work on my 5450?
Help?

I have your guide bookmarked from before. It is the guide I followed earlier this evening to get the images off my LG5450. It was very helpful.
But I cannot find anything on MP3 uploads

Need some help guys

I followed the tutorial for loading the MP3 ringers through vzwpix, and once I had them on my phone they played but with a weird screeching sound in them. Does anybody know whats going on and have a fix for this problem.

I am using Bitpim v7 to upload my converted mp3 files and it works fine.

Here is the only one I could upload, stupid net connection is going wacko today.

Usher - Confessions - Yeah.mp3

I am having trouble finding bitpim .62b. Does anyone know where I could get this?

For some reason bitpim .7 doesnt recognize mp3's and keeps giving me error messages.

Thanks in Advance.

does the 5450 vx6000, 4600, lg 4010, 4050 all use same cable?

Posted by: engineer2001

I just bought two LG G4010s (one for my wife and one for me), and I would love a tutorial like this for our phones. Will this tutorial work for the 4010? I can buy a cable off eBay if needed...

Thanks for any info!

Posted by: engineer2001

shaolin_racer, you can find Bitpim 0.62 here:
http://www.cowger.us/bitpim-0.62-forVX6000-setup.exe

If that link doesn't work, you can always get them from the source at http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/. You can get about all versions there, I think.

There aren't many people who answer questions on here, are there? We need someone who designs cell phones, I guess.

Posted by: shaolin_racer

Thanks engineer2001. That link was dead when I first saw it. Then about half an hour after I posted it was up again.

No, unfortunately not. But they sell cell phones were I work, next time I see one of the reps, I'll let them know about this forum. Hopefully they'll tell some of their tech support guys.

i have nb Riderz- so fly (58 seconds) as my ringtone and when someone calls me it will play for bout a second then stop for a second then play then stop then play and so on, but when i go to my media and go to ringers and i play it, it plays fine.

any one knows whats up?

Posted by: smokeysz4

can anyone place the drivers onto this, because i have the cord but the drivers i have don't work. :-( So if you could post them up that would be great!

Posted by: ACtotheP

Ok, i'm using the LG 4500, the newest version of BitPim, and am only having one problem.....I can get pics on there fine, no problem, phone book synchronizes etc. When I cut an mp3 and follow the walkthrough, everything works fine, the file size is 255k, but when I go to BitPim and click add ringtone, it won't show my file. the file type is set to "ringtone files" and it wont recognize my mp3....I tried to drag and drop and got any error? Anybody else have this problem/know a solution?
Thanks.

it took a little bit of playing around with sound forge, but i finally got it...

I couldnt wait 3 days for the cable so i went out and paid $40 at the verizon store for the data cable with all the drivers and stuff. After about an hour of fiddling, I loaded it succesfully on the computer and was able to mess with my phonebook with QuickLink Mobile Phone. However I can't get BitPim to connect to my phone. Everytime I try to upload an mp3 I get this error message:

LG-VX6000 on COM1: The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew.

I have no idea what that means or how to fix it. Help please.

Posted by: ynggun21

I had the same problem, make sure you have the drivers for the phone, shoud have came with the cable, now if you loaded the drivers successfully then go to your device manager and see if the LG USB DRIVER is there, if it is and you see an exclamation (yellow) point then right click on it and click on update driver and if the yellow exclamation point dissappears your good to go. Also Im assuming your using bitpim go into the settings and mnake sure everything is right, either com port 1 or like me I have mine set for auto so it detects it itself. also make sure you phone is in there as well. If you get stuck just drop me a email

Posted by: PrimeTime3000

Ok i admit im a dummy! I tried it all step by step with my LGvx6000 from verizon when i go to my phone to listen to the file i get no sound help please what am i doing wrong?

Posted by: My LGVX6000

Just out of curiosity I have been through 3 VX6000 phones thinking the speaker was messed up... its just the sounds unless the volume is ALL the way down, sound like crap with music tones.. Why even do the tones? The voices sound ok, but music sucks Was told by verizon that they will be changing all of this in june when they get their new phones with the speakers like nextel.

Any USB Data Cable which comes with the driver cd and is for a VX6000...providing your phone is a VX6000 if it isn't then get one that is for you phone.

Lenahan2001,

That Sound Forge 7.0 download you said was a full trial still acts like a 20 use 30 day trial when I download it. Has anyone else downloaded it to see if it was a full trial? That would be sweet if there was a full trial.

Posted by: justin18

i used sound foge to make the ringtone file i want, but where it says save as type, what kind of file do i save it as? and wen im in bitpim wen i click add in the ringer tab and i look for the file i saved, the music file doesnt show up anywhere.

Posted by: iROCjayz

save it as a mp3.

i just tried it, but it was not a full trial for me. i know that some people have posted with other programs to edit and such, but is anybody willing to take me step by step through using the other programs?? i'd try, but i'm not that computer literate it would give me a headache.

Posted by: DeeZi

when i go to saveas, the file comes up as a .wav and I'm able to change it to mono but if i change it to .mp3, i can't change to mono. i'm using a vx4400 and I changed bit/sample rate to 16/16000. i tried leaving it as .wav and changed the extension to .mid but the song doesn't come up working...

i've made a few other ringtones on cool edit pro but my trial ran out

Posted by: JTRipper

deezi are you starting out with an mp3? and does the 4400 play the mp3's?

sound forge is out there without the trial.. just gotta know where to look and what to look for.

as for other programs.. it would seem to be the same instructions. just finding the correct tab on the program.
as long as the mp3 is mono and 32kps @ 22,050 it should work. ill have cool edit pro 2000 and will try using that and if it works i will post my instructions.

i dont have the cable for the 4400 but if anyone knows if it will play mp3s as ringers please tell me id be willling to pay 30 bucks for a cable if it does.

Posted by: DeeZi

yea 4400 plays mp3s...search the forum for the thread...my phone's been stocked w/ mp3s but then my trial ran out for Cool Edit Pro when I wanted to change some but I just found a cracked version and everythign works fine now

and as for the cable, it's only about $10 from radioshack and it's well worth it

Posted by: JTRipper

thanks for the info on the 4400.. i see you know about cracks.. thats what i was hinting to. but didnt want to condone it.

Posted by: JTRipper

dee can ya post some instructions for the 4400.. i cant seem to get them to work.. i know its not the cable.. i can read all my phones info..

just cant seem to send files to the phone.. even when renamed with the mid extension.

Posted by: buckinmi

are you using bitpim? Make sure you are using the 4400 version and not the 6000. Are you getting any error messages?

Posted by: JTRipper

at first i was using the 6000 version.. i downloaded version 7 it sends the name of the ringtone to the phone but when i try and play it i get nothing.

ive looked at the other version of bitpim but it seems that the 4400 wont play mp3 ring tones.

even when renamed.

havent tried to convert the mp3 to midi. i was hopin to do this the same was i have done with the 6000.

ive also been using sound forge 7 to convert files to 32k mono and 16k mono. ive seen some say they have had sucess with cool edit pro. i will try that tongiht.

has anyone been able to make them work? it seems possible that it should work..

Posted by: justin18

i am using the bitpim version thats made specially for the vx6000 (i had problems with version 6)but i still cant get ringtones onto my phone. i save them as an mp3 and follow all the steps, but wen i click add ringer and try to look for the file, nothing shows up. do i have the rite bitpim version?

Posted by: JTRipper

ok heres what i did.. i have both bitmips.. 6.2 for the 6000 which you can download from this thread.. and 7.0 for my 4400.

the instructions for the ringers is long but its a great walk thru for your first 5 or so ringers.. after that its memory..

not sure what thread its in but i got a proggy to convert files for the 4400. works great.. sound is waaaaay loud and a lil distorted but im working on fixing that. im using sound forge 6 for my 6000 the trail ran out on 7

create a folder on your desktop and name it RINGERS or sumtin like dat.

when in bitmip and you click on add make sure its lookin on the desktop. then click your folder your ringers should show up there.
hope that helps ya..

if not ill try and post better instructions later.. thanks

Posted by: justin18

Putting ringers on my phone wasnt working with bitpim 7 wasnt working but now that i downloaded vesion 6 it works fine.

Posted by: jherm

so i have the section of the mp3 that i want to use in sound forge

i saved it as an mp3.

when i play it in like winamp when it is an mp3 it plays

when i change the extension to .mid it will no longer play in winamp

other .mid that i have that i just downloaded as .mid work with winamp

why will it not work when i change the extension?

Posted by: shmuly

I am also a cell phone newbie (just got my cable yesterday) and this post makes this look so easy.

Thanks again

Posted by: JTRipper

jherm what phone are you tryin to put midi ringers on to..

when you change the extension of the file it wont play becasue in winamp cause winamp wont play midi.

if your using the 6000 leave it as mp3

if your using the 4400 then use midi.

dont know of any midi players off the top of my head

Posted by: jherm

i am using VX6000

and winamp does play other midis that i have (other ringers that i have downloaded)

i tried to send the file as an .mp3 to my phone and it gave me an error that says, "attachment dropped"

what is the size limit for mp3's?

Posted by: JTRipper

i use 30 seconds of mp3.

max is 60 but.. thats alot.. i crop my fav part and make it repeat for 30 seconds,,

what version bitpim are you using?

Posted by: jherm

i meant what is the size limit in terms of file size for sending to the phone

and i am not using bitpim

i just edited the mp3 with soundforge and then i want to send it to my phone via email

so what is the max size i can use for that

i tried several different sizes of files and it keeps saying, "attachment dropped"

Posted by: JTRipper

as far as i know it wont work via email..

ive tried too but it didnt work.. buy the cable and do it with bitpim. its free that way.. cept for the cable. like 30 bucks .

easier too

Posted by: getsmacked

I saved the wave file at sound forge but when I click on Add in BItPim I cant find it. I've saved it multiple times and I know where it is, it just doesnt come up on Bitmip. please help

Okay I did everything I was supposed to do in sound forge, but when I get to Bit pim nothing works and I cant find the stupid song. I think that the Bit pim might nto be connected to my phone.. Can somebody maybe tell me how to check if bitpim is actually working with my phone, or does anybody have any suggestions. thank you

Posted by: justin18

the same thing happened to me-the song woodnt show up on bitpim. i found out i had the wrong version of bitpim. after i downloaded the correct version, it worked. and also, make sure u save the file as a mp3.

Posted by: JTRipper

make sure your using version 6.2 the one you can download from here.

Posted by: dunivan

I have the same problem as getsmacked and I saved as a mp3 and bitpim(7) can't seem to find it??????????
DeAnna

Posted by: JTRipper

bitpim 7 wont read mp3s... just 6.2b and 6.0

ive noticed that.. it will read midi files though..

so just change the extension from SONG.MP3 to Song.mid

bitpim 7 willl see it then..

but the sound quality isnt as good as mp3.

ive gotten my 4400 to play mp3 by changing the extension.

hope that helps

Posted by: JTRipper

Ive read you can send songs via email.. but they are like way small..

using usb cable songs can be like 60k max..

via email its like 30 k.

so its alot less of a song..

but ive heard it works...
60k is like 30 to 45 secs.

so your lookin at like 15 secs of a song.

and must be sent to your#@vzwpix.com

Posted by: kelli7968

I downloaded the Sound Forge you said too, it kept popping up that it would expire in 30 days. Well, I have only had it for 5 days and it seems to have expired. It keeps coming up that I have done something with 20 songs and i need to buy the full version. Any suggestions. I really dont want to pay $400.

By the way, thanks for the directions, they were great!!!!!!

how do i find the "cracks"? Please help!!!

Posted by: KLH

I have found a free alternative for sound forge. I found it on here, it is called Audacity. I don't have the link to their website, but I have it uploaded to my website for anyone wishing to download it. You will also need to download this .dll file that it keeps saying that it needs in order to convert to an MP3, so here are the 2 files needed.

http://phone.sphereshards.com/audacity-win-1.2.0.exe
http://phone.sphereshards.com/lame3.97a3.zip <-- just unzip this, and when you run audacity, it will ask for the path to the .dll file when you try saving an MP3.

I hope this helps someone.

Posted by: notnomis

I am having trouble getting Audacity to encode Mp3's that will play on my phone. I get them to save as Mp3's and then use bitpim to save to my phone. But when i play them, no sound.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: kelli7968

Thank you KLH, that worked. Although i copied the same amount of time as all the rest, but the file seems to be alot bigger then the others, do you happen to know why? Also, is there a way to convert it to mono?

Thanks again for all your help, i really appreciate it.
